인간은 언제나 자연자체의 순수함, 무한함을 선망하고 추구하지만 인간의 발전 지향적인 문화는 자연의 자연스러운 생성과 소멸의 순환을 방해하고, 자연 자체에 많은 악영향을 미쳐온 것이 사실이다. 인위로부터 완전히 자유로운 자연이라는 것이 과연 오늘날에 존재하기는 한 것인지, 우리가 편안하고 아름답게 느끼는 자연의 모습은 어쩌면, 가공되고 인위적인 한 단편이 아닌지 하는 마음에, 나는 자연을 자연 그대로의 모습으로 그리지 않는다.

더 아름답게 보이기 위하여 사실적으로 묘사하기보다는 인위적인 색상과 구성을 사용하기도 한다. 때문에 작품에서는 어딘지 비현실적이며 우리 도처에 존재하는 흔한 풍경들보다 아름다움이 과장되어있다는 생각이 들기도 한다. 나는 우리가 자연이라는 토대위에 세워진 인간의 문명을 떠나서 살 수 없고, 이미 인공의 아름다움과 자연의 아름다움이라는 것이 좋고 나쁘고의 구분이 모호해졌다는 생각이 든다. 자연적인 것을 찬양하지도, 인위적인 것을 부정하지도 않으며 오히려 이 양자가 종합된 지점이 우리의 미학에서 '아름답다'라고 느끼는 지점이 아닐까 생각한다. ■ 김동진

Body of Work Description ● Humanity continues to pursue purity in the hope to achieve and acquire it. However, the innovations of mankind and the ongoing rapid development of society interfere with the natural cycle of creation, destruction and renewal. The growth of mankind has therefore had an adverse effect on nature. ● True nature is totally free and removed from artificial existence. Therefore, nature today no longer pure. As a result, I do not paint a true representation of nature derived from our world as it is seems incongruous and untrue to myself. To convey this paradoxical imbalance, I used artificial representations and equivalents rather than natural colors and frames. Hence, my work is a somewhat unrealistic and exaggerated form of beauty rather than a common natural sight. ● I do not think that humans can live without the augmentation of nature: the division of the advantages and disadvantages in artificial and natural beauty is ambiguous. I do not shun artificial things nor applaud pure nature, but rather, I believe that the two are alternatively synthesized to reach a state of equilibrium. I believe the crux of the notion of beauty is whether it is felt and perceived, or not. So we continue to question; is this true beauty? ■ Dong Jin KIM
