유토피아 Utopia

욕망의 유토피아 ● 사람들은 왜 창가에 화분을 둘까요? 그건 우리의 마음속에 숲이 있기 때문입니다 라는 문구를 라디오에서 들은 적이 있다. 작은 화초가 햇빛을 받고 자라나는 과정을 바라보며 미소를 짓는 나의 모습을 발견한다. 이런 소소한 행복이 나의 그림에 오롯이 담겨 따뜻한 울림으로 전해지길 바란다.

이번전시의 타이틀은 '유토피아'이다. '아무데도 존재하지 않는 곳'을 뜻하지만 동시에 '이상향'을 가리키는 말로도 쓰인다. 기억에서 환상으로, 현실에서 꿈으로, 현대인이 꿈꾸는 이상계로서의 유토피아로 다가온다. 인간의 삶에 대한 이들의 애정에 대한 이야기를 주로 돼지의 이미지를 통하여 내 자신을 향한 비야냥이나 웃음으로 시작된다. 자아를 잃어버린 욕망의 굴레에 허우적 거리는 인간 세상에 대한 비판적인 표현과 암울한 현실을 상상의 세계를 넘나들며 세상을 풍자하고 웃음으로 승화 시키고자 한다.

인간의 욕망으로 인해 사라지는 자연, 인간의 편리함을 위해 파괴되는 숲은 땅속 깊이 뿌리 내리지 못한 가벼운 정원처럼 보여 진다. 촉각과 후각은 느끼지 못하는 시각적 아름다움만 있는 인공자연의 모습을 우리는 익숙한 듯, 현실속에 보이지 않는 억압들과 소외들로 인한 내적욕망과 표현 욕구를 보이고 싶지 않아도 커텐속에 비치는 은밀한 모습을 들켜버린 찰라, 강한 것과 약한 것, 소중한 것과 버려지는 것, 유토피아와 디스토피아의 경계, 채워질 수 없는 결코 웃기지 만은 않은 욕망의 이야기를 해학적으로 전달 하고자 한다. ● 나는 돼지처럼 살찐 세상, 풍요로운 자연, 마음이 살찐 사람들이 되길 희망한다. ■ 임성희

Utopia of desire ● One day, on the radio, I've heard a phrase read out loud by the DJ: "Why do people leave flowerpots near their windows? It's because we all have forests in our minds." I find myself beaming a subtle smile while enjoying the little plants grow under warm sunlight. It is such simple happiness that I wish my works to capture and hold in their existence, resounding the warmth. ● The title of this exhibition is "Utopia." The word implies 'place that does not exist,' but at the same time it points to an 'ideal' place. From memories to fantasies, and realities to dreams, we—the people of today—Utopia is approached as something we desire. I depict the stories of love and life through the image of pigs, with sarcastic mockeries and laughters directed at myself. I'm criticizing the human society that has lost the self, flailing in the sea of desires, meanwhile imposing sarcasm and laughter, jumping back and forth between reality and the imaginative. The mother nature, in the process of being destroyed due to human desire; the forests being overrun for mankind's convenience, make them seem as if they're unsettled—only lightly rooted—temporary gardens made for our brief enjoyment. Meanwhile, perceiving the artificial nature—only with visual aesthetics minus tangibility and olfaction—as the norm, we are sometimes helplessly revealed of our inner desires and expressive urges, oppressed and isolated by invisible pressure. I wish to sarcastically portray the strong and the weak; the valued and the abandoned; the border of utopia and dystopia; and the insatiable, seldom hilarious stories of desire. ● I want the world to be fat like pigs; the nature robust; and the people faithful in their hearts. ■ Lim sung hee
