받을 수 없는 전화 unanswerable phone

차가운 스틸박스_steel box가 놓여있다. 사람의 발길이 잦은 광장에 검은색으로 도색된 박스가 놓였다. 바삐 발걸음을 옮기는 사람들과 상대적으로 우두커니 서있는 이것의 모습은 쓸쓸하기만 하다. 간혹 이것의 정체가 무언가 궁금해서 다가가는 이들도 보인다. "따르릉. 따르르르릉" 찢어지듯 날카로운 쇳소리로 고막을 자극하는 벨이 울린다. 귓가를 어지럽히는 이 소리는 짐작한데로 전화기의 벨소리다. 박스 안을 들여다보니 역시나 친숙한 그것이 놓여있다. 전화벨이 울리니 본능적으로 수화기로 손을 옮겨보지만, 견고한 박스 안에 들어있는 전화기에는 아무리 애를 써도 손이 닿을 수 없다. 막연히 바라보기를 한참. 결국 통신에 실패하고야 말았다. ● 누군가에게서 걸려온 것일까. 전화기의 주인은 누구지. 연신 떠오르는 물음표. 김새벽의 '받을 수 없는 전화'는 전화기의 수신기능을 물리적으로 차단함으로서 관계와 소통의 기호로서의 측면을 재고해보는 작업이다. 김새벽은 일상 속에서 만나는 사소한 행위나 생각을 비틀어 그 틈으로 새어나오는 발상을 구체화하는 작가이다. 그는 이전에도 일상에서 쉽게 접하는 공간이나 오브제의 쓰임이나 목적에 대한 물음을 통해 관계를 찾아가는 커뮤니티 지향적 작업을 이어왔다. ● 작가는 이번 전시에서 전화기라는 소통의 아이콘을 고의적 불능상태로 만들어 관객에게 소통의 무력함을 경험하게 한다. 19세기 말에 발명되어 인류의 진화와 함께한 통신수단이 동시대를 물리적으로 풍요롭게 했다면, 고도로 진화된 소통의 방식에 발생하는 문제점이 무엇인지 되짚는 의미를 갖는다. 또한 받을 수 없는 전화는 정치, 경제, 사회와 개인의 소통의 불통에 관한 문제를 꼬집는다. 개인이 아무리 걸어도 듣지 않는 권력의 귀. 개인이 아무리 들으려 해도 들리지 않는 힘의 목소리를 말이다. ■ 조두호

There is a cold steel box laying down. A box that had been painted black is laying down on a square where it has frequent contacts with people. You can feel the lonesomeness from the way that it is standing vacantly in comparison to the steps of people scuttling. From time to time people are approaching to the object wondering about its identity. "Ring, Ring...Ring..." The bell is ringing with the tearing sharp shrilling sound that stimulates the eardrums. The haunting sound circulating around the ear's rim is the ring of the phone as one has assumed. Inside the box, surely there is that familiar object placed. When the phone rings instinctively you reach out your hand to the receiver, but a phone that is placed in solid box is unreachable no matter how much you try. Staring at it vaguely for a while... Eventually it leads to a failure to communicate. ● From whom was it calling? Who is the owner of this phone? Question marks keep on coming. Kim, Sea-Byuk's 'Unanswerable phone' is the reconsideration of a point of view on a relation and a sign of communication by physically disconnecting the receiving function of the phone. The artist, Kim. Sea-Byuk, materializes ideas that come from the crack of leakage provoked from the process of twisting insignificant actions or thoughts that he daily encounters with. He has been continuing his community-oriented work that is finding its way of relations by questioning on and about a place where he easily encounters with or an object's usage and purpose. ● In this exhibition, artist is letting the audience experience the feebleness of communication by purposely impairing the phone, which is an icon of communication. Invented in the end of 19th century, along with the human development, means of communication had enriched our contemporary lives physically, and it is only to have meanings on what the problems are on the highly developed methods of communication. In addition, 'Unanswerable Phone' is raising the issues on the politics, economy, and the disconnection of communication between the society and an individual. The ear of an authority dose not ever so listen to the call of an individual. The voice of a power is not heard by the individual who ever so tries to listen. ■ Cho Doo ho

어렸을 적에... 미술시간에 미래에 대한 상상화를 그리라고 하면 으레 서로의 얼굴을 보며 전화 통화하는 모습을 그리곤 했다. 그 당시에는 그런 모습이 그야말로 상상화였다. 그런 전화기가 있으면 참 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그러면 통화를 할 때마다 너무 반가울 것이고 재미도 있으며, 분명 의사소통에도 도움이 되리라고 예상한 모양이다. 그리고 현재... 이런 모습은 이제 전혀 낯설지가 않다. 상상화였던 것이 현실이 되는 데는 불과 십 수 년 남짓한 시간이면 충분했다. 심지어는 걸어 다니면서까지 이런 일을 하는게 가능한 시대가 되어 버렸다. 그런데 이건, 반갑지도, 딱히 재미가 있지도, 그렇다고 의사소통에 도움이 되지도 않았다. 기술은 발전했으되 우린 서로 멀어져만 가고 있었다. 이러한 아이러니를 기반으로 구상하게 된 이번 전시 '받을 수 없는 전화'는 전시(작품)명 그대로 전화를 받을 수 없게 함으로써 물리적, 심리적 소통의 거리감을 표현한 작품이다. 이 전시에서 전화기는 소통의 메타포이다. 다양한 종류의 전화기가 있지만 가장 기본적인 기능인 통화만 할 수 있는 형태의 전화기를 주요 오브제로 선택했다. 작품의 기본 구성은 사람이 가까이 접근하면 벨이 울리게 되어있다. 하지만 받을 수 없는 상황에 놓인 전화기를 보면서 보는 이들로 하여금 단순한 재미를 넘어 소통의 불가능성에 대해서 제고해보게 하는 전시가 되었으면 하는 바람이다. ■ 김새벽

When I was young... During the art class, when drawing imaginary picture of the future was assigned, I used to draw people looking at each other's faces and talking on the phone at the same time. At that time it truly was imaginary drawing. I used to think that it will be so awesome to have that kind of a phone. If so, people will find being on the phone more glad and more fun, and certainly it will be more helpful to communicate with others, I thought. And now... Such phenomenon isn't so unfamiliar. An imaginary drawing became real in life and it only took couple of decades in sufficient. And now, we are in an era where working while walking is easily possible. However, this doesn't bring pleasure nor fun to us, moreover didn't bring much help in communication. Techniques have been developed, however, we are parting away. Based on this idea of irony, the exhibition 'Unanswerable Phone', just like the title, by physically making it impossible to answer the phone, is expressing physical and psychological distance of communication. In this exhibition, the phone is the metaphor of communication. Various types of telephone exist, but certain types of objects that solely have the basic functions of a phone have been mainly chosen. The basic composition is whenever a person approaches nearly, the phone is set to ring. However, looking at these unanswerable phones, I hope this exhibition will provide a chance for the audience to find it not only amusing but moreover, a chance to reconsider/rethink about the impossibility of communication in our society. ■ Walter dawn Kim
