보이지 않는 UNSEEN

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2013년 11월 14일부터 12월 21일까지 함진의 개인전 Unseen을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 뉴욕 데뷔전으로서 검은 점토를 이용하여 최근 제작된 약 50여 점의 초소형 조각이 선보일 예정이다. ● 함진은 과거 먼지, 합성 점토, 죽은 벌레와 같은 재료를 이용해 육안으로 보기 힘든 초소형 조각을 만들어 자기만의 세상에 갇힌 현대인의 모습을 풍자해 왔다. 최근에는 검은 점토만을 사용해 오고 있는데 그 이유는 가볍고 다루기 쉬운 점토로 순간의 아이디어를 빠르게 작품으로 연결, 표현함과 동시에 색을 최소화함으로써 형태와 재료의 물성에 주목하게 하기 위함이다.

이번 전시 Unseen은 가까이 다가가지 않고서는 볼 수 없다는 의미와 함께 작품 자체의 구성이 눈에는 직접적으로 보이지 않는 은유적인 형식을 띠게 되는 것을 의미한다. 최근 제작된 Untitled 시리즈는 반추상의 검은 조각들이 하얀 전시장 공간에 검은 점이 되어 떠다니는 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 자세히 살펴보면 사람의 얼굴에서 뿜어져 나온 정체불명의 생명체, 뉴욕의 건물들이 줄지어 나란히 서 있는 모습의 도시시리즈 등 작가가 직접 경험한 주변 환경의 모습이나 작가의 다양한 생각이 고스란히 담겨있다. 이는 마치 시에서 여러가지 의미를 함축하여 한 단어 또는 한 줄로 표현되어 읽히는 것과 같은 의미로 해석된다. ● 이번 뉴욕 전시에서 선보이는 함진의 아주 작고 섬세한 초소형 조각들은 하루종일 보아도 지루하지 않을 흥미로운 볼거리를 제공할 것이며, 작가 특유의 재치와 고유한 형식이 담긴 '함진 조각'의 정수를 보여주므로써 동시대 한국 현대미술의 한 단면을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Ham Jin's solo exhibition Unseen, from November 14th through December 21st. This exhibition will comprise of approximately fifty miniature sculptures from a recent series, all created using black polymer clay. ● Ham Jin's installations of miniature sculptures constructed with materials such as collected dust particles, polymer clay, and dead insects satirize the contemporary condition of individuals trapped in the world of their own making. For his recent works, he employed only black polymer clay due to the material's lightness and flexibility, which gave immediate form to Ham's ideas, while limiting the color palette allowed him to focus on the forms and structures, and the properties of the material itself. ● Unseen denotes both that the works require up-close viewing to really see, as well as that the process of construction itself is not readily apparent to the viewer. In the recently finished Untitled series, abstract black sculptures appear as if they are black dots dispersed and floating inside the starkly white exhibition space. However, upon closer inspection, human faces emerge out of unidentifiable organisms, or in the urban series, New York City's buildings are standing aligned in rows, and sceneries that the artist directly saw and experienced are all part of Ham's work. As in a poem where one word or one line could be interpreted and understood in countless ways, so is the nature of Ham Jin's works. ● In this exhibition, Ham Jin's intricate sculptures will provide a stimulating and pleasurable viewing experience that will occasion the opportunity to witness the artist's unique vision and wit, along with the insight into another aspect and look at Korean contemporary art. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
