얼굴은 인간에게 개체의 아이덴티티를 함축하는 기호로 사용된다. 얼굴은 그 사람 전체 속에서 일부에 불과하지만 경우에 따라서는 그 사람 전체를 대신 할 수 도 있는 것이다. ● 인간은 누구나 기억되길 원한다. 다른 사람의 기억 속에서 사라지길 원치 않는다. 굳이 사회적으로 큰 업적을 남기지 않더라도 그저 살아오는 동안 맺어진 관계 안에서 기억되길 원한다. 이러한 관계의 연속 속에서 사람들은 그림, 조각, 사진에 자신의 얼굴을 남기는 일들은 인간의 본능적인 행동일 것이다.

본인의 작업은 초상화, 초상조각의 형식을 갖는다. 두상을 만들거나 전신상을 만들어도 항상 정면을 바라본다. 결국 작품의 얼굴과 관객의 눈이 마주하게 된다. 하지만 본인의 작품 속 얼굴에는 인상을 결정짓는 눈, 코, 입을 만들지 않는다. 만들어지지 않은 자리에는 대신 드로잉으로 눈, 코, 입을 그리거나 비워둔다. 빈 얼굴에 그려지는 드로잉은 데생하듯 묘사하는 것이 아니라 빠르게 그린 후 문지르고 물감의 흐름과 번짐을 이용하여 우연히 표현되는 얼굴의 표정들을 놓아둔다. 또는 그리고 지운 흔적들을 내버려둔다. ● 입체로 만들어진 인체 안에 회화적으로 표현된 얼굴을 마주하면서 나타나는 공간의 모호함, 이를 통한 낯설음은 특정 인물에 대한 이미지를 각인 시키는 것이 아니라 작품을 바라보는 사람들 기억 속 누군가를 공유하는 것이다. 이러한 작용들은 작가와 작품, 작품과 관객, 관객과 작품의 소통의 고리를 만들어, 타인의 작품을 관람하는 것이 아니라 작품을 통해서 관객과 상호소통 하게 된다. ■ 문석준

The face is used as implied signs for human's individual identity. The face is only part of the human but faces can be substituted for the whole human being in some cases. ● All men want to be remembered. They don't want to be forgotten in other's memories. Even though they didn't leave behind remarkable achievement, they want to be remembered in relationship built when they have lived. It could be instinctive behavior for human to leave their faces in pictures, sculptures and photos in this continuous relationship. ● My works have form of portraits and portrait sculptures. Even if I made heads of full-length portraits, those always look straight ahead. At last, those work's front face and audience's eyes are faced with each other. But I don't make eyes, nose and mouth which can give impression. I draw eyes, nose and mouth or keep empty in not created spot. The drawing in vacant faces is not described by means of sketching. But draw fast, rub and use paints flow and spread for facial expression accidently. And also leave erased marks. ● The ambiguous space faced with pictorial faces in solid human body. From that, this unfamiliarity doesn't engrave on particular person's image but shares someone in people's memories who are looking at works. These effects make link with artists and works, works and audience and also audience and works' interactions. We don't view other's works but we can communicate with audience through works. ■ MOONSEOKJUN
