우주보다 더 좋은 Better Than Universe

"우리가 우주라고 믿고 있는 잘 알려진 고착된 현실 대신 현실의 다양한 잠재적 가능성을 생산하는 예술 The possibility of Art that produces multiple possibilities of reality, more than just one fixed and well-known one, which we believe our universe." 비트겐슈타인의『논리철학논고』의 첫 번째 명제는 "세계는 일어나는 모든 것이다." 라는 것이다. 다시 말해, 이 세계 속에서는 상상이 가능하거나 불가능한 모든 일들이 일어날 수 있다. 다만 세계 안에서 일어나는 것들은 개연성 혹은 확률의 영향 하에 있다. 1925년에 오스트리아의 물리학자 에르빈 슈뢰딩거는 전자가 입자이면서 동시에 파동이라는 실험적으로 입증된 이중성에 대해 '슈뢰딩거의 방정식'을 제안했다. ψ (프사이)로 표시되는 이 방정식은 전자와 원자의 행동을 거의 완벽하게 설명해낼 수 있었다.

그러나 '파동함수(wavefunction)'라고 불리는 ψ 의 의미를 밝혀낸 것은 1928년 물리학자 막스 보른에 의해서였다. 그는 파동함수가 주어진 장소에서 물체가 발견될 확률을 나타내는 함수라는 사실을 밝혔다. 이 함수는 물체가 이곳 혹은 저곳에 있을 확률을 우리에게 알려준다. 그에 따르면, 한 사람을 나타내는 파동함수는 우주 전역에 걸쳐져 있다. 다만, 그 사람이 달이나 우주의 반대쪽에서 발견될 확률은 지극히 낮을 뿐이다. 파동의 확률과 상식적인 존재 사이의 차이점을 해결하기 위해 보어와 하이젠베르크는 "파동함수가 외부의 관찰자에 의해 관측되면 단 하나의 값으로 붕괴된다."는 가설을 내세웠다. 즉 관측이 행해지기 전에, 물체는 모든 가능한 상태에 '동시에' 존재하지만, 관측이 행해지면 단 하나의 상태만이 확고한 실체가 되는 것이다.

우주가 파동함수가 가리키는 모든 가능한 형태로 존재할 수 있다는 가설로부터 '멀티-버스'(multi-verse)라는 개념이 비롯되었다. 물론 우리에게 주어진 우주는 하나뿐이고 그것을 우리는 개연성의 연속으로 인한 최종적으로 선택된 우주라고 간주한다. 그렇다면 '붕괴'된 다른 가능태의 우주들과의 접점은 가능한가? 예술은 다른 가능태의 우주를 우리가 살고 있는 현실 안에서 생산하는 유일한 영역이다. 그것은 존재하지 않거나, 존재할 수 없었을 사건들을 현재 안에서 생산함으로써 우리의 우주를 다른 우주들과 연결한다. 예술은 물리학을 앞질러서 '초끈이론'이나 'M(막)-이론' 등에서 말하는 11차원의 중첩과 같은 난해한 현상들을 현재 안에서 생산해낸다. 예술가들은 '우주보다 더 좋은' 구조를 구현해내는 것이다.

이번 전시『우주보다 더 좋은』은 미디어 아티스트들이 상상하는 예술-기술적 대안들이 우리가 알고 있는 현실을 어떻게 새로운 '현실들'로 생산해내는지 보여주고자 한다. 미디어아트는 동시대의 창작 조건들을 가장 잘 반영하는 분야라고 할 수 있다. 우리는 1930년대 발터 벤야민이 예측했던 '기술복제(technological reproduction)시대의 예술'에서 더 나아가 안토니오 네그리가 예견한 '다중'의 최종적 형태인 '기술다중(technological multitude)시대의 예술'에 도달하고 있다. 기술은 일상의 시-공간을 다층적(multi-layered)이고 다중심적(multi-centered) 구조로 변화시키고 있다. 소셜 네트워크와 실시간 편집기술의 발전을 통해 사람들은 수없이 많은 자신들의 세계를 다른 이들의 세계들과 중첩시키고 있다. 예술가들은 현실의 다중성을 가시화하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 우리가 살고 있는 시대의 예술은 이제 전혀 다른 '패러다임'을 향해 급격히 변화하고 있고 미디어아트는 이를 구현하는데 있어 가장 탁월한 분야라고 할 수 있다. ● 대구시와 ZKM이 함께 시작하게 될 미디어아트에 대한 연구 협력 및 발전의 노력에 앞서 열리는 이번 전시가 대구시민들과, 나아가 모든 관람객들에게 많은 영감과 창조성의 동력을 제공하게 되기를 기대한다. ■ 유진상

"The possibility of Art that produces multiple possibilities of reality, more than just one fixed and well-known one, which we believe our universe." ● The first proposition of Wittgenstein in Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is "The world is everything that is that is the case". In other words, all things that can be imagined or not may arise in the world. However, the things that happen in the world are under the influence of probability and chance. In 1925, the Austrian physicist, Erwin Schrodinger, proposed the 'Schrodinger equation' on duplicity confirmed experimentally that electrons are particles as well as waves. This equation is indicated as ψ, which almost completely explains the actions of electrons and atoms. However, the meaning of ψ, also referred to as 'wave function', was identified by the physicist Max Born in 1928. He found out that the wave function shows the probability of discovering an object in a given place. This function tells us the probability of an object being here and there. According to him, the wave function that shows one person is spread out throughout the universe. However, it is very low in probability for that person to be discovered in the opposite side of the moon or universe. In order to resolve the difference between the probability of wave and the logical existence, Bohr and Heisenberg came up with the hypothesis that "if the wave function is observed by an outside observer, it is collapsed into a single value. In other words, before the observation was made, the object existed 'at the same time' in all possible states, but after the observation, only one state becomes the fixed substance. ● The concept of 'multi-verse' came from the hypothesis that all possible forms indicated by the universe and wave function may exist. Of course, there is only one universe for us and consider that as the universe finally selected through continuous probabilities. Is it possible to be in contact with the universe of different possibilities that have collapsed? The art is the only area that produces the universe of different possibilities in the reality that we live in. It produces sequences that may or may not exist in reality, thereby connecting our universe with other universes. The art produces difficult phenomenon like eleven-dimensional superpositions referred to in 'super-string theory' or 'M-theory', overtaking physics so that artists achieve the structure that is better than this given universe. ■ YOOJINSANG
