상상의 미래, 나무들 ● 에피소드 #1 몇 해 전, 취재 차 사과 과수원에 간적이 있었다. 정부기관의 의뢰로 성공한 농가의 스토리를 책으로 엮는 일이었다. 사과 이름에 과수원 주인 이름을 붙일 만큼 자부심이 아주 강한 곳 이었고, 생산량도 비슷한 크기의 다른 과수원보다 2배 이상 되는 곳이다. 하지만 그곳에서 본 사과나무의 형상은 가히 충격적이었다. 사과나무의 가지들은 거의 존재하지 않았고 나무 기둥에 사과가 촘촘히 매달려 커가고 있었다. 마치 통나무에 사과가 커가고 있는 것 같았다. 사과가 좀 더 빨리, 많이 자란다고 하는데, 뉴턴이 보았다면 내일 지구가 멸망 하더라도 사과나무만은 심지 않을 것이다.

에피소드 #2 ● 월미도에서 영종도 가는 배를 타게 되었다. 아이들과 나들이 삼아 가는 길이라 배를 타고 가는 것도 즐거운 경험일 것이라 생각되어서였다. 그곳에 갈매기들이 새우깡을 좋아 한다는 사실은 익히 알고 있던 터라 커다란 새우깡 한 봉지를 사서 배 위로 올라갔다. 이미 갈매기 수십 마리는 배를 따라 선회 하고 있었고 많은 사람들이 하늘에 새우깡을 날리고 있었다. 하늘에 흩어지는 새우깡을 낚아채는 갈매기들의 솜씨는, 공중에 곤봉을 힘껏 던진 다음 몸을 몇 바퀴나 구르다 다시 받아 내는 손연재 선수만큼 신기했다.

해마다 봄이나 가을이 되면 가로수 들은 홍역을 치른다. 자란 자신의 가지들이 전기톱에 의해 베어지는 것이다. 이것을 가리켜 "전지작업"이라 부르는데, 그러는 이유는 도시의 나무가 너무 무성하게 자라 강풍 시 전기사고의 위험이 있고, 각종 표지판을 가리게 되고 또한 길가 가게들의 간판을 가려 영업에 방해가 된다는 이유에서이다. 또한 여기에 빠지지 않는 이유가 수형(樹形)을 바로 잡는다는 것이다. 수형이라는 것은 나무의 모양인데, 다니던 익숙한 길을 전지작업 된 후 가게 되면 그 황량함이란 이루 말할 수 없다. 어떤 곳에는 나무 기둥의 중간까지만 남기고 기둥 윗부분과 가지들을 다 쳐내버려 참담하기까지 하다. 그 것은 마치 통나무를 땅에 박아놓은 듯한"수형"이다.

이러한 수형이 몇 세대를 거치게 되면 그중 어떤 나무는 돌연변이를 일으켜 가지를 뻗지 않는 나무가 나올 법 하다. 또 시간이 지나 몇 백 세대가 지나면 가로수란 이러한 나무를 가리키는 말이 될 지도 모른다. ● 월미도의 갈매기들도 이제 거의 물속에서 먹이를 찾지 않는다고 한다. 그렇다면, 인간이 화식(火食)을 하면서 소화 흡수가 용이하게 되자 장의 길이가 짧아 졌듯, 이들도 몇 십 세대 혹은 몇 백 세대가 지나면 새우깡을 잘 소화 시킬 수 있는 내장 기관과 그것만 갖고도 살아 갈 수 있는 몸체, 새우깡을 잘 감지 할 수 있는 눈, 코, 부리로 변이 될 수도 있을 것이다.

다윈(Charles Darwin)과 라마르크(Jean-Baptiste Lamarck)의 진화론에 의하면 생물은 생존경쟁에 적합한 것은 살아남고 그렇지 못한 것은 도태된다고 한다. 즉, 한 개체가 생존에 필요한 부위는 더욱 발달되고 생존에 불필요한 부위는 소멸되는 변이 때문에 진화한다는 뜻이다. 이러한 변이는 생존을 위한 생물 내부의 치열한 갈등의 결과일 것이다. 하지만 나무가 이러한 갈등 없이 외부에 의해, 즉 인간의 필요에 의해 조작된 모습으로 수형이 변이된다면 이러한 것들도"진화"라 불러도 되는지는 확실치 않다. ● 고대 그리스 시대부터 있었던 미학, 아이스테시스(aisthesis)는 중세와 르네상스를 거쳐 현대에 이르면서 개념과 기준이 변모해 왔다. 수 천 년 동안 우주와 자연과 인간의 형상을 재현(representation)하던 미술도 사진술이 나오면서 그 표현 형식에 일대 변화가 온 것도 사실이다. 먼 미래, 자연물의 형질 변화가 우리의 감성적 지각에 어떤 결과를 가져올지 무척 궁금하다. 미적 고려 없이 인간에 의해 변이된 나무는 계속 멋지고, 아름답고, 풍요로운 존재일까. 그 때의 사진에 담겨지는 나무는 지금과는 사뭇 다른 새로운 미학적 감각에 의존해야 할 것이다. 어차피 사진은 현실의 형상을 그대로 재현하므로. ● 이 사진들은 미래에 다한 상상이다. 새로운 미학적 감각으로 미래의 나무를 상상해 보는 것, 즐거운 일이다.

사족을 붙이자면 "New Trees"시리즈의 모든 사진은 컴퓨터상 여러 프로그램에 의해 철저히 조작 되었다. 그 이유는 육안으로 보았던 것과 사진에 찍힌 것과의 차이, 즉 사진을 찍는 동안 의식 되었던 사물들이 사물에 그대로 재현되지 않는 감각적 지각의 문제 때문이다. ■ 김형섭

Future of imagination, Trees ● Episode #1 A couple of year's ago, I have been to an apple orchard for news gathering. It's to make a book for stories of successful farm houses, which was sponsored by government organizations. The orchard had enough pride to name it as owner's name and its production amount was more than 2 times than other orchards. However, the shapes of apple trees there were very shocking to me. The trees have almost no branches and apples were growing too densely with tree columns. It's very much like a scene that apples are growing in a single column of tree. This method is believed to make apples grow more rapidly with abundance. If Newton saw the scene, he wouldn't have planted apple tree. ● Episode #2 I happened to ride a ship heading for Youngjeong Island from Weolmi Island. That's because I thought it would be a joyful experience to take a ship with children for travel. As I have already heard that seagull there likes Saewookkang (a sort of snack, Shrimp sticks), I bought a large bag of Saewookkang before I was on board. ● Several dozens of seagulls have been already circulation following the ship and people on board were throwing Saewookkang to the sky. Skill of seagulls to take scattering Saewookkang in the sky is marvelous enough to look like the gymnast Sohn Yen Je who is able to grab a cudgel again after she threw it to the sky and then rolls her body several times. ● Every spring or autumn, street trees suffer from hardship, their grown-up branches are cut off by chain saw. This is called "Pruning". This "Pruning" is said to be performed because too grown-up trees in cities may cause electrical accidents by strong winds while they may block various sign boards in streets causing barrier of sales for shops in streets. One of reasons in this "Pruning" which can't be missed is said to correct shapes of trees. Tree shape is an appearance of tree. I feel very desolate when I walk on my familiar road on which trees are cut off by pruning. In some extreme cases, almost all of branches and upper parts of tree column are cut off leaving only middle level of a tree, which makes me very upset. It's a "tree shape" which looks like a single column stabbed into ground. ● When this type tree shape undergoes several generations, it's likely that a tree without branches is appearing by mutation. Moreover, after several hundred generation, a street tree may be referred to this type of tree. It's said that seagulls are not finding their feed under water anymore. Likewise as human being's intestine is shortened since they are easy to absorb foods in internal organ due to cooked food by fire, seagulls would be able to live only with internal organs that well digest Saewookkang and their body while their other parts will be changed into eyes, nose and beak well detecting Saewookkang. ● According to evolution theory from Charles Darwin and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, only superior creature under competitive environment will survive while others become extinct. In other words, this means all creatures are evolving due to variation by which necessary parts for survival in a creature are more advancing while unnecessary parts are removed. This variation would be a result of very severe conflict between creatures for the sake of survival. However, if shape of tree is deformed by human's manipulation without this conflict, I am not sure that we can call it "Evolution" ● Aesthetics (aesthesis), which had existed since Ancient Greek, had been changed for its concept and criteria passing through the Middle Ages, Medieval times and Renaissance. It's true that art, which represented shapes of universe, nature and human beings for several thousand years, has been dramatically changed in terms of its expression methods due to advent of photograph. I am very curious what consequences are resulted in for our emotional recognition because of changed shapes of nature in the far future. Is it possible for changed trees in their shape without considering aesthetic aspect to keep their identity of beauty and affluence continuously? Trees in photographs in the future would be dependent of different and new aesthetic sense which is very different from nowadays. Anyway, photographs reproduce current shapes in reality. ● Therefore, these photographs are imagination of future. It's a happy affair to imagine future tree with new aesthetic sense. ● If I add some redundancy to my artworks, all photographs in the series "New Trees" are manipulated by several computer graphic. It's because objects that are sensed during photographing process are not exactly reproduced. This is not matter of photograph technique but matter of sense. ■ Kim, Hyung Sup
