지극한 '것' 'Things' Devoted

'지극'에 대하여 ● 무엇에 '지극'하다는 것의 가장 근본적인 양태는 문자 그대로의 뜻으로 "헌신"이다. '지극'의 행위가 단순히 물건에 있는 것이 아니라 어떠한 일에 정성을 들이는 것 이라면 그것을 주는 자의 온 몸을 대가로 한다.

'것'에 대하여 ● '것'은 사전적의미로 사물, 일, 현상 따위를 추상적으로 이르는 말이다. 이번 전시 타이틀인 지극한 '것'의 '것'에 의미를 'object'이 아닌 'thing' 그것으로 생각하고 있다. 사물, 즉 '것'은 널리 퍼져있다. 우리 일상에서 눈에 보이는 것 중에도 보이지 않은 것 중에도 '것'이 아닌 것 이 없다. 손에 잡히고 눈에 보이고 냄새 맡고 맛 볼 수 있는 연장적 속성을 가진 것뿐만 아니라 정서적인 내적 움직임 까지도 '것'이라 생각한다. 유형의 것, 무형의 것으로서 그야말로 모든 것을 의미한다. 모든 것은 어떤 '것'이다. ● 그간의 '것'들은 지극하긴 하였는가? 이번의 '것'들은 지극하긴 하였는가? ■ 최홍선

오래 전부터 우리 역사 속의 도자형태의 미감에 대한 관심과 고전읽기에 애정이 있었다. 이러한 관심과 애정은 "모든 것은 이미 거기(the old)에 존재하고 있다"라는 생각에 이르게 되었고 이번 개인전 작업을 진행하게 된 계기가 되었다. 우리 역사 속에 의미 있는 도자 형태를 발췌하여 부피감 있는 형태를 평면화 하였다. 기물형태에 시선을 집중 시키다 보면 입체의 단면이 드러나게 되는데 그 단면을 포착한 '것'들과 18세기 조선 지식인들의 '벽(癖)'과 '치(痴)'의 추구경향과 지적 경향에 관련된 글을 접하며 박지원, 이덕무, 박제가, 정약용, 이용휴 등과 같은 일군의 지식인들의 사유에 경의를 담아 마음속에서 일어나는 '것'들을 빚어보았다. ■ 최홍선

On 'Jigeuk' (지극) ● The term 'jigeuk' (지극) in Korean refers literally to 'devotion'. If this connotes being devoted to some work, not a thing, it requires extreme earnestness and devotion. On '-geot' (-것) ● The dictionary meaning of 'geot' refers to thing, affair, or phenomenon. I consider 'geot' (것) in the Korean exhibition title Jigeukhan Geot (지극한 것) to be thing, not object. Things or 'geot' are omnipresent. Everything in our daily life is 'geot,' be it visible or invisible. I consider all, including not only something tangible, visible, and taste-able, but something emotional and with inner movement, 'geot'. In a word, 'geot' means all that is tangible and intangible. All is 'geot'. ● Can you consider the things I did as dedicated? Can you consider the things I do as dedicated? ● I have long been interested in the aesthetic sense of our traditional ceramics, and had affection for reading Korean classics. My premise is that all is already there, a base from which I have tried to discover the old as the new. This idea is crucial to this solo show. I have chosen historically meaningful forms from the three-dimensional forms I found in our traditional ceramics, and represented them two-dimensionally. I captured a cross section of a three-dimensional structure, focusing on its form. Works on display at the show are such pieces capturing cross sections and also items from the pieces that were likely to be used and treasured by Joseon intellectuals of the 18th century, such as Park Ji-won, Yi Deok-mu, Park Je-ga, and Jeong Yak-yong, Yi Yong-hue. These works, showcasing my respect for the intellectuals, are inspired by my reading of their books pertaining to their cerebral tendencies. ■ CHOIHONGSUN
