두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2013년 10월 10일부터 11월 8일까지 유승호의 개인전 echowords를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 뉴욕 데뷔전으로서 문자와 이미지 사이의 세계를 시각적으로 재치있게 풀어낸 약 6여 점의 드로잉을 선보일 예정이다. ● echowords는 '흉내내는 말'이라는 뜻의 사전적인 의미를 가지며 의성어나 의태어와 같이 의미 없는 단어들로 이루어진 그의 드로잉 작품들을 일컫는 대표적인 용어이다. 작가는 작품에 쓰여 있는 말들과 거기서 보이는 이미지와의 상호관계에 주목하는데, 'echowords'는 말이 이미지를 흉내 낼 수도 있고 이미지가 말을 흉내 낼 수도 있는 것이며 또한 이 둘의 어떤 상호작용일 수도 있다는 의미를 가진다.

유승호의 작업은 크게 깨알 같은 글자를 반복적으로 화면에 채워 전통 산수화를 그린 '문자 산수화'와, 언어나 문자가 가진 고유한 의미를 해체시켜 소리나는 대로(또는 표기법으로) 표현한 '문자 놀이' 작업으로 나누어진다. '사랑, 사랑 누가 말했나' 작품에서 보이듯 작품을 이루는 글자들은 겹쳐 쓰기에 따라 원근감을 표현하며 보는 거리에 따라 이미지가 극적으로 달라지는 효과를 준다. 수묵 산수화 원전의 이미지를 토대로 스케치한 그의 작업을 보면 과거 산수화가 가지고 있던 고상한 정신과는 전혀 관계없는 글자들로 채워 나가며 기존의 원전이 가지고 있는 권위적 의미를 탈바꿈시켜 의미없이 메아리치는 이미지를 만들어냄으로써 새로운 조형언어를 탄생시키고 있다. 또한 두산 레지던시 뉴욕에서 작업한 '뇌출혈 natural'은 글자와 이미지 간의 소통 관계를 표현하는데 마치 한자의 상형문자와 같이 언뜻 보기에는 그 뜻이 변하여 글자로 이루어진것 처럼 보이나 그와 반대로 붓으로 그린 글씨들은 이미지를 흉내내어 뜻과 이미지의 흩트림과 함께 언어를 유희적인 관점으로 바라보고 있다. ● 유승호(b. 1974)는 한성대학교 회화과를 졸업하였다. 아트 스페이스 휴(2013, 파주, 한국), 미즈마 아트 갤러리(2007, 도쿄, 일본), 원앤제이 갤러리(2005, 서울, 한국) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 대안공간 루프(2011/2006, 서울, 한국), 국립현대미술관(2010/2002/2000, 과천, 한국), 두산갤러리 서울(2008, 서울, 한국), 모리미술관(2008, 도쿄, 일본), 서울시립미술관(2007, 서울, 한국), 바드 컬리지(2005, 뉴욕, 뉴욕, 미국), 광주 비엔날레(2002) 등에서 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. ■ 두산갤러리

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of YOO Seungho, echowords, from October 10 to November 8, 2013. The exhibition occupies his recent series of drawings which wittily create the interrelation between text and images in a visual world. ● Echo word, a linguistic term that refers to a particular kind of reduplication or imitation, represents Yoo's drawings composed of piles of tiny meaningless onomatopoeic or mimetic words which together form into an image. Yoo focuses on the interrelationship between the text and the image where the text mimics the image and the image mimics the text. ● Yoo shows two broad bodies of works in this exhibition, 'Text Landscape' and 'Text Play'. 'Text Landscape' is comprised of tiny texts in shape of Asian traditional landscape painting. 'Text Play' deconstructs the original meaning of the text and reconstruct into phonetic or orthographic characters. ● In 'Love love, who says,' the overlapping of the texts creates perspective. The image also changes drastically according to the view point. Even though his drawings are based on the existing traditional landscape paintings, unlike its original authoritative and noble sentiment, he fills up the empty space with meaningless texts, which resonate new formative language. ● '뇌출혈 natural,' the new work made during DOOSAN Residency Program, shows the relationship between the image and the text as well. Like hieroglyphic characters, from the first glance, the meaning of the text changes into a shape; however, on the contrary, the texts drawn by the brush imitates the image blurring the boundaries of the language from the playful point of view. *뇌출혈 means cerebral hemorrarge, which phonetically pronounced 'nae-chool-hyul' ● YOO Seungho (b. 1974) received a B.F.A. in Painting from Hansung University. He has had solo exhibitions at Art Space hue (2013, Paju, Korea), Mizuma Art Gallery (2007, Tokyo, Japan), and ONE AND J. Gallery (2005, Seoul, Korea). His works also has been included at alternative space LOOP (2011/2006, Seoul, Korea), National Museum of Contemporary Art (2010/2002/2000, Gwacheon, Korea), DOOSAN Gallery Seoul (2008, Seoul, Korea), Mori Art Museum (2008, Tokyo, Japan), Seoul Museum of Art (2007, Seoul, Korea), Bard College (2005, New York, NY, U.S.A), and Gwangju Biennale (2002, Gwangju, Korea). ■ DOOSAN Gallery
