사물이 예술이 되기 위한 조건들 ● noumenon [누메논]: 본체(本體), 실체, 물(物) 자체로 감성이 아닌, 이성에 의해 사유되는 예지적 대상이나 절대적 실제. 들뢰즈가 말하길 진리는 어떤 사물과의 「우연한」 마주침에 의존하는데, 이 마주침은 우리에게 사유하도록 '강요' 한다. 강제성을 띤 개념들로 인해 고착되어버린 사물의 역할은 새로운 의미를 받아드리기를 거부한다. 이처럼 일상적인 영역에서 사물의 새로운 역할과 의미를 받아드리는 것은 쉬운 것이 아니다. 그렇기에 사물이 예술의 영역에 들어왔을 때, 그것이 예술로 인정되기까지 꽤 오랜 시간동안 논쟁이 있었으며, 그 기준은 아직도 모호하다.

'예술에 있어서 사물은 무엇을 뜻하는가?' 이 질문은 미술의 새로운 지평을 제공하였다. 사물을 어떻게 이해할 것인가를 둘러싼 예술적, 철학적 이론에 대한 변화가 일어났고, 작가들은 발견한 오브제를 수없이 다양한 형식으로 표현하기 시작하였다. 예술가들은 개별적인 사물을 예술의 대상으로 선택하여 논리적 흐름이나 관계를 설정하는 동시에 서로 다른 맥락의 이미지나 사물을 병치, 중첩시켜 새로운 작품을 선보였다. 또한 그러면서도 그들은 사물 자체가 가지고 있는 이야기에 귀 기울인다. 예술가는 그들이 선택한 사물들을 개인적 관점과 사회적 논리로 통해 전유하고 활용하며, 현대미술이라는 영역 안에서 변화하는 사물들의 역할을 대중들에게 인식시켰다. 그리고 새로운 기술들이 부합되면서 재료와 형태가 의도적으로 변화하는 새로운 작품들을 선보인다. 이와같이 작가는 사물에 대한 사유를 다양한 형식을 통해 전달하였다. 이에 관객들은 이전에 공유하였던 일반화된 특징이나 경험을 기점으로 예술품이 된 사물을 바라보기 보다, 새로운 방식의 시각적 독해 능력을 요구하였다. 그리고 각각 지각된 시각과 경험, 이성의 연결고리를 통해 작품의 연관성과 해석을 부여하는 것은 보는 이들의 몫이 되었다.

이번 전시는 사물의 물성에 대한 새로운 사유를 시도한다. 이전 예술가들이 비예술적 사물을 미술에 끌어드리면서 더 넓은 시각을 소개하려고 하였듯이, 사물자체가 예술의 주체가 되었을 때, 또 다른 시간과 공간에서 오브제에 대한 새로운 개념들이 존재함을 보여준다. 예술가들은 모든 사물의 의미와 형태가 변화될 수 있음을 자신이 발견한 사물을 통해 이야기한다. 이처럼 발견된 사물들이 하나의 작품으로 설치되며, 일상과 사회, 시간과 공간 등의 상호 연관성에 의해 새로운 매개체로서 다양한 관점의 현실을 탐구하고, 재현한다. 작품은 다른 장르의 대상과도 잘 어우러지며, 뜻밖의 요소들이 통합되여 일상적인 예술 안으로 자연스럽게 들어온다. 이는 사물의 물성에 대한 고찰은 단순히 감성적인 경험이 아닌, 이성과 지성에 의해 사물의 본질, '물자체'에 대해 개념을 재형성한다. 이에 우리는 작품을 통해. 시대에 상응하는 시간과 공간에 따라 의미가 변화된 사물의 기존 물성의 개념이 사라짐에 따라 새로운 개념을 내세우며, 감각적인 대상의 존재를 찾아 나선다. ■ 이윤정

Conditions Things Become Art ● Noumenon : Noumenon, as original body, substance, or thing per se, refers to an object of foreknowledge or absolute substance reasoned by rationality, not sensibility. Gilles Deleuze argued that truths are dependent on chance encounters with objects. This chance encounter 'forces' us to reason. The role of things, fixed due to some coercive concepts, rejects embracing any new meaning. As such, it is not easy to accept the new role and meaning of objects in the daily realm. When things first entered the domain of art, people doubted long before they appreciated these as art, but the criteria is still ambiguous. ● What do things mean in art? This question opened a new horizon of art. There were changes in artistic, philosophical theories on how to understand things. Artists started to express found objects in diverse manners. Artists would bring individual things they chose as objects of art to some logical flow or relation, presenting a new work of art through juxtaposition or overlap of images or things from a different context. They also paid attention to the stories such things convey. Such artists utilize things they select anchored to their individual perspective and social logic, making the general public aware of their changing role within the territory of contemporary art. And, they present new works by applying new technology, intentionally involving new material and form. They unveil the depth and width of their thought through form, conveying their own messages. Viewers now demand new ways of visual interpretation rather than seeing things that have become a work of art based on generalized hallmarks and experience. The role of interpreting works through a link of sight, experience, and reason belongs to such viewers. ● This exhibition attempts new thinking on the material property of things. As artists yesterday tried to introduce broader perspectives by drawing non-artistic objects into the domain of art, the exhibition shows new notions of objects are available in a different time and space when a thing per se becomes a subject of art. The artists here represent meaning and form of all objects and may undergo change by using the things they found. ● They set found objects as a work of art in the correlation between daily life and society, time and space, exploring and representing reality from multifarious perspectives. Their works match well with pieces of other genres, and enter the sphere of everyday art when integrated with extraordinary elements. A consideration of the physical property of things reconstructs the concept of the nature of things, the notion of thing per se by reason and intelligence, not mere emotional experience. We present a new concept on the disappearance of preexisting notions of physical properties of things whose meaning changes according to space and time, exploring beings to become the objects of the senses. ■ Lee Yoon-jung
