이선주, Meiko Kikuta, 신혜정으로 이루어진 이번 전시는 런던을 무대로 활동하는 이선주와 일본과 프랑스를 오가며 전시하는 Meiko Kikuta, 그리고 한국과 런던에서 활동 중인 신혜정이 함께 하는 전시이다. 이들 세 사람은 각기 다른 재료와 매체를 가지고 자신의 작업세계를 드러내고 있다. ● 이번 전시의 주제가 되는 '재구성된 기억'란, 이 세 작가가 작업을 하는 방식에 초점을 둔 것이다. 기억이란 것은 실제와는 다르게 표현이 될 수도 있고, 개인에 의해 충분히 왜곡될 수도 있는 것이다. 개개인은 이러한 기억들을 '현실을 부인하거나 혹은 극복'하기 위해 사용하기도 한다. 우리가 「혹은 작가 스스로가」 경험하는 공간에 대한 기억들을 반복적으로 그곳을 찍고 재구성하여 작업을 만들어 내는 작가 이선주와, 심리학을 전공하고 「그것을 바탕으로」 자신의 기억 속에서 경험된, 혹은 그렇지 않은 공간과 장소를 다소 추상적이고 기하학적인 선으로 재창조 해 내는 작업을 하는 작가 Meiko Kikuta, 여러 다른 나라에서의 이질적인 경험과 기억들을 잊어보기 위해, 혹은 극복하기 위해 가면과 얼굴이라는 매체를 가지고 작업을 만들어내는 작가 신혜정의 작업에서 우리는 이들이 경험한 공간과 기억 속 잔상들, 그리고 실재적 기억들을 어떻게 재구성하여 풀어내는지 볼 수 있을 것이다. 또한 이번 전시는 하나의 통일된 매체로 구성되는 전시가 아닌 사진, 드로잉(이선주), 설치(Miko Kikuta)와 퍼포먼스 사진과 비디오(신혜정) 등 다양한 매체들이 하나의 주제 속에서 흥미롭게 어우러지는 장소가 될 것이라 기대해 본다. ■ Amie Simmonds

같은 장소, 다른 시간을 사는 사람들을 하나의 장면으로 연출하기 위해 이선주는 관찰자로서 공간이 그곳에 속한 사람들에 의해 '경험의 배경'에서 '실천된 장소'로 변화하는 모습을 읽어나간다. 복수의 시간과 상황이 담겨있는 사건들은 한곳을 반복적으로 촬영하고 그 사진 속 왜곡되고 늘어진 그림자로 장소를 재구성해나가는 방법으로 전달된다. 선택된 그림자는 순간의 상황을 반영하지만 주위의 익숙한 풍경의 한 부분이며, 단순히 '사실의 다른 면'이 아닌 어떤 시간 속 사건을 함축하는 장면이 된다. 이는 작업에서 실천된 장소를 만드는 동시에 관람자에게 그 장소에 있던 사람들의 움직임 그리고 일어난 상황을 상상할 수 있게 한다. ■ 이선주

메이코 키쿠타의 작품은 과학과 예술의 복합성 속에서 창조된다. 그녀는 대상을 정하고 선, 색상, 구성, 개념 등의 각기 다른 요소를 사용하여 그 대상을 표현하고, 그 대상에 대해 대체하거나 빼는 방법을 사용하여 실체-그림자 (substantial-shadows)라고 표현되는 조각을 만든다. 비록 이러한 과정을 통해 실체-그림자 (substantial-shadows)의 결과는 다르게 표현될 수 있지만 여전히 원래의 그 대상을 의미하게 되는데, 그것은 그 대상의 견고하고 추상적인 본질을 쫓는 시각적인 퍼즐의 한 방법이라고 생각한다. 쉬운 예로 1더하기 3이 4가 되거나 혹은 (시각적으로 두 숫자를 나열해 놓은) 13이 되는 것과도 마찬가지의 결과이다. 이러한 작가의 생각은 한 대상에 대한 다른 아이디어들이 동시에 공존할 수 있다는 생각에서 비롯된 것이며, 작가는 대상의 물리적 측면에도 초점을 맞추고 작업을 진행한다. 이러한 그녀의 탐구는 홀 앤 코너 M에서 열릴 이번 전시에서 그녀의 새 설치작업인 "re-"를 통해 계속 진행 될 것이다. ■ 메이코 키쿠타

이번 전시에서는 신혜정은 작가를 둘러싼 익숙한 공간에 대해 이야기 한다. 매일 지나는 길이라든지 자신과 타인의 스튜디오 등, 낯설지만 익숙한 공간에 관심을 가지는 것이다. 그녀는 그 장소들에 자신이 머물렀던 흔적을 모래 그림으로 남기는데, 이러한 모래 그림은 사람에 의해 인위적으로나 바람에 의해 저절로 사라지기도 한다. 바람이나 사람에 의해 흩뜨려지거나 제거되는 모래그림의 모습은 공간의 유동적인 모습과도 닮아있다. 비디오 작업에서 신혜정은 그녀가 부여한 또 다른 자아인 가면을 착용하고 수동적 공간이라 이름 지어진 공간 안에서 모래 그림을 그린다. 이는 그녀가 그녀만의 공간을 정하고 그것을 자신의 영역으로 표현하는 행동이라 볼 수 있다. ■ 신혜정

hole and corner M is pleased to present an international group exhibition 재구성된 기억『記憶』l Reconstructed Memory by three artists; LEE Sunju working in the UK, Meiko Kikuta based in Japan and the UK, and SHIN Amy Hyejung working in Korea and the UK who reveal own worlds with different materials and media. This exhibition features a selection of drawings, photos, a video and an installation. ● Memory could be expressed differently from the real and, sometimes distorted by its holder. People also use the memory 'to deny or overcome' reality. The exhibition 재구성된 기억『記憶』l Reconstructed Memory is focused on the way those artists have been applying the memory as a subject, and shows how to amplify it in each practice. LEE Sunju assembles and reconstructs places using the artist's memory taken from events happened; Meiko Kikuta who studied psychology recreates the experienced or unexperienced memories of places and spaces using abstract and geometric lines; and SHIN Amy Hyejung tries to obliterate or overcome the extraneous experiences and memories from foreign countries by making masks and faces as media. Through the exhibition, we would have an opportunity to see how the artists reconstruct and untangle the experienced places, afterimages in the memory and the actual memory, while it is expected to be the place in which the possibilities of the media, such as drawings, an installation, photos and a performance video, are interestingly harmonized within one subject. ■ Amie Simmonds

Drawing on interpretations of the spaces in which we live, Sunju creates intricate and complex drawings that explore how places reflect a rich array of facets. Events and places are reconstructed through her work, and serve as dizzying examples of reconstructed reality. In order to read a place, she repeatedly photographs a space over several days, catching distorted and stretched shadows. The photographs are then used to represent the situation of moment as well as reconstruct the physical place, using abstract shadows, simultaneously. The artist amalgamates these photographs of a particular place, and draws and prints on selected materials (paper, film and monofilament) to transform them into an ethereal object or installation. ■ LEE Sunju

Meiko Kikuta's work is often associated with the conflict and synthesis in Science and Art. She creates an item and explores its elements (i.e. lines, colors, compositions, concepts, etc.) Then replace, subtract, reverse, and merge them to create pieces she calls "substantial-shadows". Although a substantial-shadow may appear different from the original item, everything still refers to the original. It is a visual puzzle to retrace both concrete and abstract objects. Just like 1 + 3 becomes 4 or could visually become 13, different concepts could coexist at the same time. Kikuta focuses on object's physical aspect and underlines deceptiveness of it. She continues to construct objects and substantial-shadows dapple her new installation "re-" at Hole&Corner M. ■ Meiko Kikuta

In this exhibition, Amy Hyejung would like to talk about familiar space surrounding her. She pays attention to the everyday path, her own studio and working area too. She leaves sand drawings in those spaces as her sign. The sand drawing is lost by someone or to disappear in the wind. Ironically, this sand painting by someone removed or to disappear in the wind, is similar idea of her about spaces. In Another video, Amy wears a human face mask and painted a sand drawing in her studio space. Leaving a trail in her private space is a strong action for keeping her territory. ■ SHIN Amy Hyejung
