예술에 테크놀로지를 사용하는 데 있어 백남준만큼 위대한 영향을 미친 예술가는 없었다. 오늘날의 미디어 환경을 형성하게 될 여러 변화들을 백남준은 미리 내다보았으며 이는 '참여 TV', '랜덤 액세스 정보', '비디오 코뮨' 같은 그의 선구적 개념들에서도 잘 드러난다. 『백남준의 주파수로: 스코틀랜드 외전』은 50년 전 1963년 독일 부퍼탈에서 열린 백남준의 첫 개인전 『음악의 전시 - 전자 텔레비전』을 기념하고자 한다. 이 전시에서 백남준은 텔레비전이라는 테크놀로지를 처음으로 본격 예술의 영역으로 가져오면서 텔레비전을 촉각적이고 다감각적인 매체로 제시하였다. 1960년대 반체제적 사회 운동의 흐름 속에서 백남준은, 예술가가 테크놀로지를 인간화시켜야 하고 제도의 벽을 허무는 데 동참해야 한다고 믿었다. 음악가로 교육받은 백남준은 자신의 예술 레퍼토리의 물리적 재료로서 테크놀로지를 다뤘으며 이는 후에 비디오, 위성, 방송, 로봇, 레이저까지 확장되었다.

'예술과 테크놀로지'라는 대주제 아래 열리는 2013년 에든버러국제페스티벌에 공식 초청된 백남준아트센터는, 찰스 다윈, 제임스 클러크 맥스웰이 공부한 유서 깊은 에든버러대학교의 미술관인 탤봇라이스갤러리를 백남준의 작품들이 내뿜는 전자기파의 공명으로 가득 채우고자 한다. 『백남준의 주파수로』는 비디오, 조각, 사진, 아카이브 자료 등 백남준아트센터의 다양한 소장품을 중심으로, 진지하고 엄밀하면서도 웃음과 유머를 잃지 않는 사상가이자 실험가인 예술가 백남준의 면모를 재조명할 수 있도록 기획되었다. 전자기 이론과 텔레비전 테크놀로지의 발생지인 스코틀랜드에서 열리는 첫 백남준 전시는 테크놀로지와 창의적으로 관계 맺기를 고취하면서 백남준이 역사 속 예술가가 아니라 지금 현대인들에게도 여전히 혁명적인 예술가임을 다시 한번 입증하게 될 것이다.

전시 개막 주에는 퍼포먼스 아트 프로그램이 진행된다. 음악, 미술, 퍼포먼스 등 장르의 경계를 뛰어넘는 진정한 탈경계인으로서 백남준의 예술 정신을 현재에 되살리며 백남준아트센터의 여러 프로젝트에 참여한 바 있는 다케히사 고수기(일본), 권병준(한국), 이옥경(한국), 하룬 미르자(영국) 등 네 명의 국제적 아티스트들의 공연은 전시의 진폭을 더욱 넓혀 줄 것이다. 그리고 에든버러국제페스티벌이 끝난 후 9월과 10월에도 계속될 『백남준의 주파수로』전은 특별히 홀리루드하우스 궁전의 퀸스 갤러리에서 열리는 영국왕실컬렉션의 『레오나르도 다 빈치: 인간의 역학』전과 함께 열린다는 점에서도 의미가 크다. 테크놀로지에 대한 예술가의 가장 혁신적인 탐구를 상징하는 다빈치와 백남준, 두 인물의 시대를 초월하는 예술 정신이 에든버러에서 타전되어 그 너머까지 울려 퍼지기를 기대한다. ■ 백남준아트센터

No other artist has had greater influence on the use of technology in art than Nam June Paik; he prophesied changes that would shape the ideas, 'Participation TV', 'Random Access Information' and 'Video Commune'. Transmitted Live: Nam June Paik Resounds celebrates the 50th anniversary of Paik's first solo exhibition, Exposition of Music - Electronic Television(Wuppertal 1963), when the artist brought television in the realm of art for the first time, presenting it as a tactile and multisensory medium. As part of the counter-cultural movements of the 1960s, Paik believed that artists should humanise technology, get their 'fingers in and tear away the wall'of the establishment. Paik, a trained musician, treated technology as a material part of his repertoire, which later expanded to include video, satellite transmissions, robots and lasers. ● Invited by the Edinburgh International Festival 2013 with a grand theme of 'art and technology', Nam June Paik Art Center will fill Talbot Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh, where such notable historical figures as Charles Darwin and James Clerk Maxwell attended, with electromagnetic waves to reverberate with the diverse forms of Paik's practice. Drawn primarily from the Nam June Paik Art Center's collections including videos, sculptures, photographs and archival materials, the exhibition is intended to shed new light on the artist Paik who was a rigorous but always humorous thinker and experimenter at the same time. As first Paik exhibition in Scotland, birthplace of electromagnetic theory and television technology, Transmitted Live will demonstrate how revolutionary the artist remains for contemporary audiences in encouraging creative engagement with technology. ● In the opening week, a special programme of performances will take place as an integral part of the exhibition to broaden its amplitude. Four international contemporary artists selected for the performances, namely, Takehisa Kosugi(Japan), Byungjun Kwon(Korea), Okkyung Lee(Korea), Haroon Mirza(UK) are those who have participated in the Nam June Paik Art Center's projects before, reinvigorating Paik's artistic spirit in terms of truly transcending the boundaries of music, visual art and performance art.
