개인의 주관적인 시점에서의 자신은 유일무이한 범상치 않은 존재임이 분명하다. 허나 개인을 사회라는 무수한 개체의 집합 안에서의 한 점으로 인식하고, 철저하게 제 3자의 입장에서 해석하게 되면, 그 점 하나하나는 전혀 특별하지 않은 '평범'그 자체일 것이다. 다시 말하자면, 인간은 타인에 의해 정의 내려지는 개체로서의 관점과 개개인의 의식에 자리 잡은 주체로서의 관점을 동시에 품고 있는 것이다. 개체로 인식된 자아가 평범하지만 명확히 보여 지는 것이라 할 수 있다면, 주체로서의 자아는 분명한 형체가 없는 혹은 허구일지도 모르는 망상과 같은 것이라 할 수 있다.

나의 작업은 이러한 유형의 자아와 무형의 또 다른 자아에 대한 이야기이다. 순수하게 작가 자신을 모델로 행해지는 나의 작업은 거창한 시대의 이데올로기나 사회적 모순을 담기보다는 한 사람의 일상의 표정 또는, 살아가는 한 장면만을 소소하게 보여준다. 따라서 관객들은 자신들이 모르는 사람의 얼굴이 만들어진 작업을 보게 되며, 그것은 길을 걷다가 익명의 누군가를 그저 스쳐지나가는 정도의 특별하지 않은 일일 것이다. 그들에게 내 일상의 모습은 하등 의미심장하지 않다는 것이다. 이렇듯 긴장감 없는 시선으로 시작되는 나의 작업은 지루하고 관성적인 일상이라는 영역에서의 삶과, 그 속에서의 작은 일탈을 만화적 상상으로 풀어낸다.

이러한 작업을 통해 나에게는 특별하지만 누군가에게는 아무것도 아닌 것, 즉 상상속의 특별한 나와 일상의 평범한 나를 동시에 제시함으로써 관객들은 자신들과 연결되지 않은 무관심의 대상인 나의 형상과 그 안에 나의 주관적 견해로 구성된 이야기 사이에서의 괴리를 보게 된다. 여기서 나타나는 괴리감은 보는 이들에게 유형의 자아와 무형의 자아의 존재를 확인하게 하고, 한발 더 나아가 이를 그 자신들에게 대입시키게 함으로써 분명히 공존하지만 좀처럼 닿을 수 없는 꿈과 현실의 평행선상에 놓이게 만드는 것이다. ■ 주혜령

In an individual's subjective point of view, the individual is clearly a unique and unusual existence. However, if you recognize an individual as a dot in the group of numberless objects that is society and interpret it from the third-party's position thoroughly, then each dot of the group will be 'usual' itself and not unique at all. In other words, the human being bears both the perspectives as the object defined by others and the subject located in individual's consciousness at the same time. The ego recognized as an object can be said to be ordinary but seen clearly, whereas the ego as the subject can be described as the delusion that has no obvious feature or figment. ● My work is the story about this type of material and immaterial egos. My work purely based on the model, the artist himself, shows the look of every day's routine or a scene of living simply rather than embodying a tremendous ideology of the age or social contradictions. Thus, the audience will appreciate the creation work of unknown people's face and it will not be a special experience as if they just pass by strangers on the street every day. That is, the look of my life would not be meaningful to them at all. In this way, my work starting with a suspense-less viewpoint depicts the life in aspects of an inertial and boring everyday life and a small deviation with the imagination of a cartoon style. ● Through this work, by presenting the special part of myself in an imagination and the ordinary part of myself in everyday life at the same time, audience can see the disjunction between the shape of me that is the object of indifference and not connected to them and the story consisted of my subjective opinions in the work. The feeling of being disconnected here leads audience to confirm the existence of material and immaterial egos and, by extension, substitute it to themselves. By means of this, it makes the audience placed on the parallel line of the dream and reality that apparently co-exist, but cannot be reached readily. ■ JOOHYERYOUNG
