The Human Shop

스페인 빌바오에 위치한 판화전문 갤러리 La Taller에서 고은강의 개인전을 6월 21일부터 8월 9일까지 개최한다. 홍익대학교를 졸업한 고은강은 리포니아 주립대학교 롱비치에서 석사를 마친후 현재 미국 네바다 리노의 주립대학교에서 교수를 역임하며, 전 세계를 무대로 작가로 활동하고 있다.

The Human Shop이라는 주제로 선보이는 이번 전시를 통하여 인간이 살고 있는 우리 사회의 부당함과 아이러니를 인간과 동물의 섞여진 형상의 하이브리드들을 통하여 표현하고 있다. 오늘을 살고 있는 우리 인간의 사고 방식은 점점 돈과 자본주의적 사고에 의하여 움직여진다. 인간 대부분의 목표가 부자로 잘 사는 것에 촛점이 맞추어지고, 그만큼 인간은 소비적인 성격이 더욱 짙어지고 있다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통하여 관객들에게 자본주의가 팽배해진 21세기를 살아가는 우리들의 자신을 돌아볼 수 있는 기회가 되고자 한다. ■ La Taller 갤러리

Eunkang Koh's new work will be on exhibition at La Taller y Galería de Grabado in Bilbao, Spain from June 21 through August 9, 2013. The opening reception will be held on June 21, 2013 from 8:00 PM until 10:00 PM. ● Eunkang Koh's work focuses on the social phenomena of our 21st century society of consumerism. She views the lifestyle and thinking processes of humans as largely ruled and guided by money and capitalism. "Our goals are to become richer and wealthier so that we can consume even more." Trying to fit into a consumer-driven culture masks our own individuality as our identity and personality become cloaked and defined by "consume more." Her exhibition "The Human Shop" expresses the absurdity of the human world, manifesting through the social phenomena of consumerism, and is visually depicted in the creation of creature hybrids. They portray ironic gestures that create a mixture of humor and grotesqueness, reflecting life in our consumer society. ● "The Human Shop" consists of different types of prints and drawing, incorporating various media such as clay and magnets in depicting the mass consumer culture in which humans live today. Koh also experiments with human-made materials such as plastic boxes, vinyl sheets, and paper bags. Through the eye of an artist these materials represent and symbolize the micromanaged and controlled contemporary society. ● Eunkang Koh is an Associate Professor in Printmaking/Drawing for the Art Department of the University of Nevada Reno, College of Arts. Professor Koh received her B.F.A. from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, Korea, and her M.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach, California. Ms.Koh has had significant solo and group exhibitions in the United States, South Korea, Spain, China and Bulgaria. She also received a Nevada Arts Council Artist Fellowship Honorable Mention Grant for fiscal year 2013. ■ La Taller y Galería de Grabado
