Empty to Be Filled

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2013년 6월 20일부터 7월 20일까지 이성미의 개인전『Empty to Be Filled』를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난 1월 두산갤러리 뉴욕에서 선보인 한국의 젊은 회화 작가의 작품을 소개한 그룹전시에 이은 두 번째 Young Korean Artist 시리즈로서 그의 최근 작품이 선보일 예정이다.

이성미는 10대에 미국으로 건너가 회화와 조각을 전공하고, 볼티모어와 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하다 최근 한국으로 거처를 옮겨 작품활동을 시작하였다. 그는 연약하고 변형 가능한 것에 관심을 가지며 깨지고 버려진 유리와 거울 등 가변적인 재료들을 모아 작가 자신의 사유와 경험을 담은 설치작품과 조각들로 표현한다. 작품「Empty to be Filled」는 폐차에서 얻은 깨진 유리 파편들을 모아 붙인 것으로, 20여 년 간의 미국생활 후 한국에 귀국했을 당시 다시 처음부터 시작하는 마음으로 그동안 활동한 것들을 비워내며 다시 채우는 과정이 그 시작이 되었다. ● 최근 작업한「Empty to be Filled」는 과거에 거대한 원에서 작은 원으로 조형적 형태는 작아졌지만 재료는 변하지 않았는데 작가가 사용하는 비물질적인 재료들-주로 길거리에 버려진, 깨진 유리조각들-은 가치가 없었던 것이 재생되고 심지어 아름답게 구현되는 모습에서 작가의 섬세한 감수성이 대상을 환원적으로 바라보는 면모를 볼 수 있다. 그리고 작은 유리 조각들을 이어 붙이는 과정에서 이뤄지는 반복적인 움직임은 일종의 정화되는 카타르시스를 작가에게 제공하며 개인의 명상적인 의식과 동일시 된다. 이외에도 연기, 레즌 등 형태가 없는 통제가 불가능한 성질의 것은 그가 느끼는 기억, 환경, 정체성 등이 오직 작가와 그 찰나의 시간의 협업을 통해서 이루어 지듯 예측할 수 없는 우리 삶의 단면을 포착한다. 이렇듯 채움과 비움은 눈에 보이지 않는 것과 보이는 것 이면에 존재하는 것들에 대한 반영임과 동시에 환경에 따라 다르게 작용하는 특징을 가지고 있다. ■ 두산갤러리

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce『Empty to Be Filled』, a solo exhibition of Sungmi Lee, from June 20 to July 20, 2013. The exhibition features six of her works from recent series of sculptures and installations. ● Sungmi Lee, a Korean-born artist, has spent her early life in the United States. She often brings her experience as an alliance and inevitable sense of loss and lonesomeness into the formless and translucent medium such as smoke, resins, plexiglas and broken glasses. ● Her recent series, Empty to Be Filled, exploits the immaterial medium such as broken glasses from the junkyard. With her hands, thousands of pieces of the shattered glasses composed bit by bit and created twinkles of jade-green sculptures then it appears into the beautiful objects which reflect her delicate sensitivity of her reductive aspects. While working with sharply crushed glasses, she employs the materials and expands its metaphors of wounds and healing in a slice of daily life in its process of working methods. Thus, the act of layering the pieces over each other offers catharsis of purification or meditation in filling and emptying her mind. ■ DOOSAN Gallery
