고갱 그리고 그 이후

"이상적 융합" 환상과 현실사이의 모순 ● "이상적 융합" 현대미술전은 폴 고갱전에서 내재되어있는 시각에 관점을 두었다. 세계적인 현대미술 다섯 작가의 작품을 통해, 오늘날까지 타자를 규정짓고 소외시키는 가치들에 대한 비판적 평가를 유추해보려고 한다. ● 고갱은 예술적 성취를 이룬 동시에, 세기의 미술가 파블로 피카소, 조르쥬 브라끄, 앙리 마티스에게 지대한 영향을 주었다. 그러나 그가 추구한 낙원 - "원시성"에는 그 주제의 현실성과 상반된 낭만적 시각이 내재한다. ● 고갱은 부르조아 사회를 거부하고 그 스스로가 프랑스로부터의 망명을 선택함으로서 낙원이란 "원시성"그 이상을 추구하려는 의지를 보였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 타이티에서 고갱의 미적 지각과 관찰은 "원시성"에 대한 식민주의적 환상에서 비롯된 어떤 편견들로부터 파생된 것일 수 있다. ● "이상적 융합"전은 폴 고갱의 가치적 유산, 낭만성, 그리고 이상적 원시성을 발견하고 재창조하려는 갈망에 촛점을 두었다. 나아가 보다 광범한 의미에서, 오늘날 광고, 매스 미디어 및 현대소비주의 사회가 요구하는 이율배반적인 환상과 현실사이의 모순을 반영하고자 한다. ■ 김유연

"The Idyllic Synthesis" Contradictions of Vision and Reality ● "The Idyllic Synthesis" is an exhibition of disparate artworks that in juxtaposition to the main exhibition of Paul Gauguin, "Gauguin and After : Voyage Into Myth" may serve to instigate a critical appraisal of the values current in Gauguin's era and which persist to this day that frame and exoticize the Other. ● While we recognize and celebrate Paul Gauguin's artistic achievement and his undoubted influence over such artists as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, etc, his quest for the ideal in the "primitive" may be regarded as a projection affected by a romantic vision that is in contradiction of the reality of his subject. Indeed, Gauguin's aesthetic perception and observations in Tahiti evidence certain preconceptions born out of colonial fantasies about the "primitive" and his own desire to seek the ideal in the primitive through his rejection of bourgeois society and his self-imposed exile from France. ● "The Idyllic Synthesis" considers not only the legacy of the values inherent in Paul Gauguin's regard of the Tahitian natives and his desire to discover and recreate a romantic and idealized primitivism, but in a broader sense, the contradiction between the idealized vision and reality that persists in contemporary consumer society and its exploit in corporate advertising and the mass media. ■ KIMYUYEON
