아무것도 아닌 이야기 The Story of Nothing

"누구에게나 어린 시절은 있었다. 그러나 그 어린 시절을 기억하는 어른들은 많지 않다"라는 생땍쥐베리의 말처럼 동심은 인간들이 영원히 그리워하는 삶의 원형질이며 인간 본연의 순수성을 간직한 원석 같은 존재이다. 이러한 동심을 대상으로 하는 동화는 어린이만을 위해 존재하는 것이 아니며 성인들에게도 잃어버린 꿈과 환상성을 제공하기도 한다.

나는 어렸을 적부터 동화속세계에 대한 동경을 가지고 있었다. 그다지 활동적이지 않았고 혼자 책을 읽고 상상하는 것을 즐겨했던 터라 동화책은 현실과 다른 세계로 가는 출입구였으며 그 안에 나만의 놀이터를 만들고 꿈을 꾸는 것은 하루를 보냄에 있어 가장 중요한 일과 중 하나였다. 성인이 되어 지금까지도 나는 동화를 읽지만 그 당시에 느꼈던 무궁무진한 상상의 세계와는 또 다른 느낌이다. 복잡한 현대를 살아가면서 합리적이고 이성적인 사고의 발달은 동화에 등장하는 인물들과의 관계나 이야기 전개의 당위성을 의심하게 만든다. 왜 그래야만 하는가? 에 대한 질문을 던지며 자꾸 이야기를 논리적으로 전개하려 한다. 동화는 점점 아이들만의 전유물이 되어가고 어른들의 세상에선 '아무것도 아닌 이야기'가 되어버린다. 꿈을 꾸지 못한 파랑새는 날수 없듯이 사람들의 사고 또한 한정된 범위 내에서 축소되고 형식화 되어간다.

'아무것도 아닌 이야기'는 내가 10살 때 구상했던 동화의 제목이다. 각각 다른 이야기의 등장인물들이 하나의 이야기 속에서 공존하는 상당히 말도 안 되는 스토리 구조를 가지고 있다. 당시 느꼈던 생각들... 왜 빨간 모자는 늑대와 같은 편이 될 수 없지? 라는 상상에서 출발을 하여 자신의 주인을 폐위시키고 왕이 된 장화신은 고양이와 사람들을 즐겁게 해주기 위해 서커스단을 운영하는 브레멘 음악대를 등장시켜 우스꽝스런 이야기를 만들어내었다. ● 꿈을 꾸는 행위는 모든 행동의 시발점이 될 수 있다. 아무것도 아닌 것처럼 보이는 각각의 이야기 속에 존재하는 의미 있는 꿈의 씨앗을 찾길 바래본다. ■ 김성수

The Story of Nothing ● "All grown-ups were once children... but only few of them remember it." As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry says, the innocence of childhood is a core value in life that everyone is forever missing, which represents our most innocent mind as human beings that brightens like a shiny diamond. Fairy tales are not just for children but sometimes they also give adults a time to reminisce about lost dreams and fantasy. ● Since I was a child, I have always longed for the fantasy world from fairy tales. As I was somewhat inactive but preferred reading books and imagining, the world in fairly tales was like an exit from the reality to a different world where I can make my own playground and dream, which became my valuable daily routine. As a grown up, I still read children's stories but now I feel something different from the wide imaginary world that I had felt before. The rational way of thinking that I have developed while living in this complex modern society makes me doubt the relations between story characters or the feasibility of the plot. I keep asking questions like "Why is that?" and try to tell the story in a logical way. Then, fairy tales become the preserve of children only and are just The Story of Nothing to grown-ups. Just as a bird with a broken wing cannot fly, the way of thinking of people who cannot dream is becoming more limited in fixed forms. ● The Story of Nothing is a title that I gave to my own fairly tale when I was ten years old. The story has quite a ridiculous plot where characters from different stories co-exist in the same story. The thoughts that I had at that time started from an imagination with questions like "Why can't the girl in Little Red Hood be friends with the wolf?" to a ridiculous story that I made up where the Puss in Boots, who dethroned a king to take the power, shows up in the same story with The Town Musician of Bremen who run a circus to entertain people. ● Dreaming itself can be a starting point for any action. I wish people could find a small seed of meaningful dreams that exist in all stories, even though they look like nothing. ■ Kim Sung Soo
