2013년 장윤성 개인전,『MOVING LANDSCAPE 2』는 대안공간 루프의 '후반작가 지원전'으로 기획되었다. 루프에서 매년 열리는 후반작가 지원전은 데뷔 후 이미 많은 경력을 쌓은 중간세대 작가들의 지속적인 프로모션을 위한 전시다. 한국 미술계는 2000년대 이후 젊은 작가 발굴 및 지원 제도를 계속해서 발전, 증가시켜 왔다. 그러나 이에 반해 상대적으로 중간세대 작가들은 신진작가들과 기성작가들 사이에서 소외되고 있다. 루프 역시 매년 신진작가 공모를 진행하고 있으나, 후반작가 지원전은 이런 지원 제도의 대상을 보다 연륜 있는 작가들까지 확장한 버전이라 할 수 있다. 이미 국내외 미술계에 이름을 알리고 수준 높은 작업을 축적해 온 작가를 선정, 전시 기회를 제공하는 한편 그 작업을 재조명하여 다시 한 번 주목받도록 하고 국내외에 지속적으로 프로모션을 하는 것이 후반작가 지원전의 목표다.

장윤성은 2001년 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과를 졸업했으며, 미디어아트를 전공하였다. 이후 그는 많은 전시에 참여하며, 매번 사진, 비디오, 설치 등 장르를 폭넓게 넘나드는 다양하고 파워풀한 미디어아트 작업들을 선보여 왔다. 그의 작업은 다양한 미디어를 활용해 공간 자체를 작업의 일부로 포괄하는 대담한 스케일을 큰 특징으로 한다. 또한 작가는 관객의 개입을 통해 움직이고 변하는 인터랙티브 시스템에도 많은 관심을 기울이고 있다. 이번 전시『MOVING LANDSCAPE 2』에서 선보이는 작업은「Camera Test 5-b」와「MOVING LANDSCAPE 2」의 두 가지다. 양쪽 다 시리즈로 진행 중인 작업들로, 미디어와 관객 간의 관계에 천착하는 작가의 오랜 문제의식을 반영한다. 특히 전시 제목이기도 한 대표작「MOVING LANDSCAPE 2」는 장윤성이 2007년 사루비아다방에서 전시하여 큰 관심을 모았던「MOVING LANDSCAPE」시리즈의 2탄이다. 이 시리즈는 갤러리 공간을 재구성하는 설치 작업으로 그 장소를 이루는 고정관념을 타파하고, 관객의 움직임에 따라서 공간도 함께 변화하게 만드는 장소 특정적 프로젝트다.『MOVING LANDSCAPE 2』는 지난 2007년 전시에서와 전혀 다른 새로운 요소들과 메커니즘을 통해, 미디어와 공간에 순응하는 것이 아니라 그것들과 적극적으로 상호작용하는 신선한 경험을 관객들에게 제공할 것이다. ■ 서진석

MOVING LANDSCAPE 2, a solo show of Chang Yoonseong in 2013, is conceived as "the mid-career artist supporting exhibition" of the Alternative Space LOOP. As held each year at the Alternative Space LOOP, the mid-career artist supporting exhibition is a project designed to instigate continuous promotion of artists who are in the mid-stage of their artistic career built upon a fair amount of professional experience after their debuts. Since the 2000s, the Korean art world has developed and enlarged with consistency the systems for introducing and supporting young artists. On the contrary to this, mid-career artists who are in between the rising and the established generation of artists have been relatively marginalized in this picture. Comparing to the already existing systems for young artists, including the Alternative Space LOOP's very own annual emerging artist competition, the mid-career artist supporting exhibition can be seen as an attempt to extend the eligibility for such support to the artists with years of experience. The objective of the mid-career artist supporting exhibition program is not only to provide an opportunity for a show to the chosen artist whose distinction has been acknowledged throughout the high caliber of his or her work, but also to keep promoting the selected artist on a domestic and international level by renewing public attention and shedding a fresh light onto the body of work. ● Chang Yoonseong majored in Media Art and graduated from the Department of Fine Art at the Korea National University of Arts in 2001. Since then he has participated in many exhibitions, where he presented diverse and powerful works that transgress the strict division between genres, such as photography, video, and installation. The daring scale is one of the major characteristics of his work, which employs various media and incorporates the space itself as part of the creation. Moreover, the artist has been much attracted by the interactive system that moves and changes according to the engagement of the viewer. The exhibition MOVING LANDSCAPE 2 features two pieces: Camera Test 5-b and MOVING LANDSCAPE 2. Both works, whose developments are still ongoing in the form of series, mirror the artist's long critical interest in the relationship between media and the viewer. MOVING LANDSCAPE 2 in particular, which is also the title of the show, is the second version of the MOVING LANDSCAPE series that garnered huge attention when it was introduced in 2007 at the Project Space SARUBIA. As a site-specific project, this series consists of installations that break down the conventional understanding about the gallery space and reconstruct the space as a transformative one that changes itself parallel to the movement of the audience. By applying brand new elements and mechanism different from the previous iteration in 2007, MOVING LANDSCAPE 2will offer the viewers a novel experience of active interaction, not of conformism, with media and the space. ■ SUHJINSUK
