경기창작센터가 문을 연 지 4년이 되었고 새로운 운영방향을 설정한지 1년을 넘어 섰습니다. 모두 다 아시겠지만 레지던시라는 것 자체가 그렇게 특별한 것은 아닙니다. 동시대의 작가들과 위대한 작가들이 스쳐지나가는 이곳에서 그들은 여러 가지 느낌과 감정, 성찰의 시간을 보냈을 것이고 그 느낌과 과정들을 자신의 창작에 투사했을 것입니다. 아니면 자신의 창작 노트 어딘가에 메모와 구상으로 남겨 두겠죠. 그리고 언젠가는 인간 삶 관계 사회 이런 곳에 둥지를 틀고 세상을 향해서 자신의 창작을 드러냅니다. 이런 과정을 무수히 반복하면서 작가들에게 창작과 성찰, 그리고 예술과 창작의 가치를 되짚어 보게 하는 곳이 레지던시일 것입니다.

경기창작센터는 거기에 몇 가지를 덧붙였습니다. 우리가 지향하는 레지던시의 방향은 예술 감정과 창조 감정이 일종의 화음과 충돌, 시너지를 만들어 내는 곳입니다. 작가들이 자신의 창작을 위해서 사색한다는 것, 스스로 연구하고 경험하며 즐긴다는 것, 이 같은 것들이 일상과 지역 속에서 일종의 삶의 가치를 높이는 것이고 정말 뛰어난 작기로 성장할 수 있는 잠재성을 제공하는 곳이기를 기대 합니다. ● 창작 역량을 강화하고 창작 활동을 활성화하기 위한 스스로 설계하는 학제형 컨설팅의 시도와 입주 작가들의 창작의 질과 폭을 넓히기 위한 아카이브와 자료의 축적, 창작활동의 의미를 예술제도 밖으로 확장시키는 학제형 비평의 도입 등을 위한 시도를 생각하고 있습니다. 레지던시 이외의 목적으로 이곳을 방문하고 체험했던 사람들에게는 명확히 말하기는 어렵겠지만 자신의 깊은 곳에서 울려나오는 소리와 그 것을 표현하는 즐거움을 경험하는 기회를 갖게 될 것입니다.

아시겠지만 우리가 만든 상설전은 레지던시에 대한 설명과 센터의 방향과 목표를 표제로 만든 전시회는 아닙니다. 우리 전시회는 입주한 작가들이 사람들에게 보다 정확하고 친밀하게, 현장 그대로 관람객이나 방문자들에게 알려지기를 바라는 전시회입니다. 입주작가 작품의 상설전시는 세 가지의 얼굴을 가지고 있습니다. ● 1. 작가들의 창작의 주제들과 관심 그리고 개인 역량을 쇼케이스 형식으로 보여줌으로서 이곳을 방문하는 예술 관계자들에게 작가들의 존재와 역량을 알리는 일입니다. ● 2. 다른 한 가지는 경기창작센터에서 시도하고 있는 동시대 예술가와 창작물을 창의예술 프로그램과 연계를 시도하는 일입니다. 그동안 교육이라는 이름으로 창작의 의미가 축소된 점이 없지 않습니다. ● 3. 세계 각국의 작가들이 자신들의 창작과 문화를 가지고 이곳에 도착합니다. 일종의 문화교반의 공간인 셈입니다. 좀 더 의식적으로 국제교류의 새로운 모듈을 만들 필요가 있겠지요.

2년이 지난 이제야 7개의 건물을 모두 활용하게 되었습니다. 어려운 중에도 예산을 만들어 주시고 격려해주신 경기도 관계자 여러분들께 감사합니다. 59명의 작가들의 작품을 선보이기 위해 각고의 노력을 기울여 주신 큐레이터와 스탭들에게 공을 돌리고자합니다. ■ 최춘일

It has been four years since the inauguration of Gyeonggi Creation Center (GCC), and a full year since new directionalities have been implemented. As we all know, the idea of a residency is no novelty in itself. Here, where countless contemporary, great artists have spent months and years, residents must have experienced various emotions, feelings and reflections, which must have been represented in their works. Or, they could have left traces of their days at GCC in their notes and memos. One day, these ideas emerge out of the textures of daily life and social interactions, and present themselves to the world. A residency is a place that invites artists into this repetitive process, and retrace the meaning of art and creation. ● GCC adds a few new elements to the above. The kind of residency GCC wishes to become, is a place where artistic and creative initiatives creates harmony, cacophony, and synergy. Artists contemplating on their creations, researching, experiencing and enjoying - these activities enhance the value of life in our daily lives and the regional space, and we hope GCC offers the artists an opportunity to develop their potentials of becoming a great creator. ● GCC's plans include implementing self-design based disciplinary consulting which aims to reinforce creative capacities and vitalize creative activities; accumulation of archival data for expanding the width and improving the quality of resident artists; and incorporating disciplinary criticism that extends the meaning of creative activities beyond the art institution. It would be difficult to explain all the above objectives to those who had visited GCC for reasons other than residency, but we wish to provide an opportunity for our visitors to experience the sounds that spring from the depth of one's self, and express them in their own voice. ● As you know, the goal of our permanent exhibitions are not to explain the residency or promote the Center's directions and objectives. Through our exhibition, we hope to introduce our artists to the visitors in a more precise, accessible fashion. The permanent exhibitions of the resident artists have three objectives. ● 1. Showcase the artists' creative subjects, interest and capacity and introduce their existence and abilities to visiting art patrons. ● 2. Connect GCC's contemporary artists and art works to the Creative Arts Program. The meaning of creativity has been, up to now, downplayed in comparison to educational purposes. ● 3. Artists from various countries around the world arrive here with their own creativity and culture. GCC, in this sense is the seedbed of cultural exchange. There is a need to, more consciously, build a new module for international communication and interchange. ● After two full years, we have come to utilize all seven buildings. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gyeonggi Province's administrators for their financial support - despite the economic downturn - and encouragement. We owe our current accomplishments and projects to the curators and staff members who have endeavored to introduce the works of 59 artists. ■ CHOICHUNIL
