한국미술, 대항해 시대를 열다. ● 오늘날 한국 현대미술작가들은 전-세계를 누비고 있습니다. 주요 비엔날레에서 우리작가들을 만나는 건 당연한 일이 되었고, 해외 유수미술관에서 개최되는 우리작가들의 전시도 부쩍 늘고 있습니다. 불과 십여 년 전만 하더라도 해외에 소개되는 우리작가는 한 손으로 꼽을 만큼 숫자도 적었고, 해외전시는 매번 기사거리가 될 정도의 특별한 사건이었습니다. 당시 주변국인 '한국'의 작가라는 사실이 핸디캡으로 작용했다면, 최근 '한국' 작가로서의 지위는 세계미술계 진입에 더 이상 불이익으로만 작용하지 않습니다. 세계 속 한국의 위상변화와 동시에 서구주류 미술계와 동시대를 겨룰 수 있을 만큼 성장한 한국미술의 역량을 실감합니다.

현대미술은 쉽지도 친절하지도 않습니다. 오늘날의 미술은 아름다운 회화와 조각이라는 미술에 대한 일반의 기대와 통념을 가차 없이 배반합니다. 회화이면서 회화가 아니고자 하고, 조각은 공간에 적용된 설치로 해체되고 확장되었으며, 기술의 발달과 사진의 도입으로 인해 사진, 영상, 기계생명체 등 예전에는 상상도 하지 못하던 것들이 모두 미술이라는 이름으로 미술관 안에 들어와 있습니다. 현대미술은 "이것이 미술이다"라고 알고 있던 기존의 생각을 과감히 떨쳐버려야 비로소 친근해집니다. 현대미술은 경계를 허물고 사고의 영역을 확장시키는 노력이자 과정이며, 따라서 허물어진 경계와 새롭게 열린 공간에 위치합니다. 상식과 선입관의 폐허 위에서가 아니고는 만날 수 없습니다.

한국미술의 괄목할만한 성과에도 불구하고, 현대미술의 난해함이 우리 미술의 우수성과 높아진 위상을 깨닫고 이해하는데 걸림돌이 되어 왔습니다. 이번 전시 "한국미술, 대항해 시대를 열다"는 이러한 어려움을 극복하기 위해 자세한 안내자가 되어드리고자 합니다. 베니스 비엔날레에 출품했던 이형구의 작품과 일본 모리미술관 개인전에서 전시되었던 이불과 최우람의 작업들, 새천년의 초반 뉴욕 미술계에 무서운 아이로 떠오른 니키 리의 자전적 작업 등 이미 해외에서 소개된 바 있는 한국 현대미술의 대표적인 작품들을 비롯하여, 지난해 카젤도큐멘타 초청작가 전준호와 워커아트센터에서 개인전을 연 임민욱, 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상 수상자인 정연두과 박기원, 루이뷔통재단에서 전시되고 콜렉션된 김혜련, 배준성, 정수진, 함진과 현재 모리미술관 10주년 기념전에 출품중인 김홍석, 배영환 등 한국현대미술을 대표하는 작가들을 한자리에 모아서 소개합니다.

여타 분야와 마찬가지로 미술의 세계화가 급속히 진전되고 있으며, 그것은 세계각국미술의 교류라는 미명 아래 서구미술의 전-세계적 배급이라는 양상으로 나타났습니다. 한국의 국력신장이 우리미술의 구매와 육성으로 이어지지 못하고 해외미술품의 수입증가라는 형태로 왜곡되고 있는 것은 바로 이러한 세계화의 폐해입니다. 이번 전시는 한국미술의 우수성을 우리 스스로 인식하고, 동시에 한국 현대미술을 세계로 알려야 하는 시급성을 공유하자는 취지가 있습니다. 대한민국 항구도시 부산에서 시민 여러분들과 함께 지금 한국미술이라는 거대한 함대의, 세계를 향한 대항해의 돛을 높이 올리고자 합니다. ■ 이승현

Korean Art: Era of Grand Navigation ● Today contemporary Korean artists are actively participating in art exhibitions and events all around the world. Encountering one or two Korean artists at some of the world's leading biennales has become a matter of course, and invitations to exhibit the artworks of Korean artists by internationally acclaimed art museums are consistent. About ten years ago, the number of artists exhibiting abroad was considerably few and for that reason any information on international exhibitions were considered exceptional, enough to be promoted as news articles every time. In those days, they were not acknowledged as 'Korean' artists but rather as artists with great talent. Recently the fact that the artists are 'Korean' is no longer to our disadvantage when establish a status in the international art scene. Today we are able to realize in actuality the development of Korean art and its capability as the Korean status within the international scene has changed, and our artists are able to be on a par with current international mainstream artists. ● Contemporary art is neither easy to understand nor it is welcoming. Today art turns away from the general expectation and notion of art being a beautiful piece of painting or sculpture. Although paintings are in actuality paintings they strive to neglect its authentic trait, and sculptures placed in a specific space disband and extend into installations. Advancements in technology and the introduction of photography, moving images, machine based organisms, and others allow unimaginable things to enter into the art museum under what is known as art. One way of becoming acquainted with contemporary art is by courageously shedding off conventional notions defining something as 'Art'. Contemporary art is about overstepping the boundaries and it is a process and a means to expanding one's scope of thinking, consequently it lies in between the gap where boundaries have been broken and an open new space. It is not possible to encounter it without standing on top of the ruins of common knowledge and preconceived notions on contemporary art. ● Despite the fact that Korean art is worthy of giving much attention because contemporary art is so abtruse for anyone to understand easily, it has acted as an obstacle in understanding the excellence of Korean art at the same time as realizing its high standards. Through the exhibition "Korean Art: The Age of Grand Navigation", we hope to enable visitors to overcome such difficulties and provide detailed descriptions on the artworks on display. The exhibition includes artworks by artists who were invited to the Venice Biennale such as Lee Hyung-koo, and those of Lee Bul and Choe U-ram, invited to hold solo exhibitions at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan. In addition to showing the autobiographical documentary by Nikki S. Lee, who emerged in the early part of the 21st century as a influential young artist. The artworks consist of representational pieces shown extensively around the world including the piece shown at Kassel Documenta in 2012 by Jeon Jun-ho; Lim Minouk's solo exhibition pieces shown at Walker Art Center; Artist of the Year Award winners Yeondoo Jeong and Park Ki-won; Heryun Kim, Bae Joon-sung, Chung Sue-jin, Ham Jin's artworks on show and in the Louis Vuitton Foundation collection; Gimhongsok and Bae Young-whan currently invited to the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition at the Mori Art Museum. ● Globalization of art is taking place at a rapid speed. Similarly with the globalization of other fields, under the notion of art exchange this is shown as a phenomenon in spreading western art around the world. In Korea this phenomenon is apparent in that instead of promoting Korean art, western art is imported and invested. This exhibition hopes for the general public to realize the importance of Korean art and to shed international light on our art. Busan Korea's largest port will prepare Korean art to lead a large fleet of ships to share Korean art with the world and to realize its excellence. ■ Lee, Seung-hyun
