The Flesh and the Book

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2013년 5월 16일부터 6월 15일까지 이재이의 개인전『The Flesh and the Book』을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 최근 촬영한 퍼포먼스를 담은 4채널 비디오로 실재 이미지와 허구화된 이미지 간의 간극을 탐구하며 움직이는 이미지와 사운드 등이 돋보이는 퍼포먼스 비디오설치외 사진 작품이 선보일 예정이다. ● 이재이의 이번 작업은 2011년 12월 31일 Park Armory에서의 공연을 끝으로 해체된 머스 커닝햄 댄스컴퍼니의 오리지널 댄서 5명을 섭외하여 특정 공간구조와 개념적 방향만을 제시하고 그 안에서 자유롭게 표현된 그들의 동작들을 촬영, 4채널로 편집하여 구성한 비디오 작업이다. 다섯 개의 두꺼운 고무줄이 설치된 공간에서 마치 음악에 내재된 "음계"를 즉흥적으로 표현하는 듯 보이는 댄서들의 몸동작은 서로 유기적으로 연출되어 공시적으로 보여지며 동시에 댄서들의 움직임은 각각의 화면에서 나오는 시각적 이미지와 청각적 요소들처럼 독립적이면서도 병렬적으로 대치된다. 소리를 그대로 문자로 옮기거나 울타리에 가두는 것이 불가능한 것처럼 이들의 움직임도, 시간도 박제되지 않는다. ● 삼차원 공간에서 움직이는 댄서들의 동작은 화면 상에서 이차원적으로 보이며 시각적인 공간의 해석이 사라지는데, 이들의 움직임을 유심히 관찰한다면, 그들의 움직임의 크기(scale)에 따른 공간의 넓이, 깊이감을 읽어낼 수 있다. 실제 이 작품은(넓은 의미에서의) 음악 또는 청각적 요소를 해체하거나 구성하여 보여주려는 것이 아니라 퍼포머들의 몸동작으로 시간 안에서의 움직임의 시학을 보여준다. 나아가 지금은 고인이 된 머스 커닝햄과 해체된 그의 컴퍼니에서 오래전 활동했던 역사를 가진 댄서들의 몸은 이 작업 안에서 다시금 몸의 역사성과 시간성을 기억하게한다. ■ 두산갤러리

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce The Flesh and the Book, a solo exhibition of Jaye Rhee, from May 16 to June 15, 2013. The exhibition occupies her four-channel video and installation which explores the intersections between performance, the moving image, and sound installation. ● Casting original dancers of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Rhee renders the human body as minimalist shapes that convey an improvisational selection of 'notes' within a musical composition co-created with Elliott Sharp. The dancers' movements, both choreographed and organic, shift horizontally across the row of screens. At times, the movements flow synchronically with the sound while in other moments the relationship between the visual and aural becomes a series of independent juxtapositions. ● As in many of Rhee's works, at the heart of The Flesh and the Book lies an irreconcilable tension; here it exists between physical dance and musical notes. The dancers perform within a 'musical staff' made of five thick rubber bands that are suspended at different heights yet are equidistant from each other. A visual loss occurs when the two-dimensional music notes transition into the three-dimensional dance, and vice versa. As more notes are gained, more dancers are lost; the two must maintain a balanced yet opposed existence. ■ DOOSAN Gallery
