전송오류 transmission error

일반적으로 사진을 촬영할 때 의도한 결과물이 나오지 않는다면, 사람들은 으레 삭제 버튼을 누르기 마련이다. 하지만 본인은 사진 촬영 후 삭제버튼을 아껴둔다. 이는 단순히 의도한 결과물이 출력되지 않아서가 아니라, 단지 찍는다는 것만으로는 카메라에 담기는 결과물을 완벽하게 예측하거나 통제 할 수 없기 때문이다.

즉, 원인규명이 불가한 기계적 오류로 인해서 우연히 얻은 결과물에 오류의 누명을 섣부르게 씌우지 않으려 하기 때문이다. 사진의 원론적 기능인 '대상 재현 효과'를 상실한 것으로 치부하여 대부분 삭제로 폐기 되어 버려지지만, 본인의 작품에서는 이러한 현상의 결과물들이 새로운 창조물의 대상이 된다.

이렇게 기계적 오류로 생성된 사진은 실제 대상과 전송오류로 인하여 상실된 부분의 이미지로 나뉘게 된다. 실제 이미지와 오류로 변형된 이미지가 한 장의 사진에 실제 이미지와 상실된 허상의 이미지로 서로 공존하여 하나의 작품으로 재창조 된다. 우연히 얻어진 결과물은, 대상을 있는 그대로 받아들이지 않던 본인의 사고의 폭을 확장시켰고, 또 다른 작품 세계로 인도했다. ■ 김정회

When you take photographs and the images don't turn out as you intended, you are bound to delete the images. In the case of the Transmission Error series, however, deleting the image files can hardly happen during the shoot: Even the poorly shot images are saved until the transmission of all the images has been completed. In the Transmission Error series, my work can never be planned and every single image is completely unpredictable. Although I'm the one who takes the photographs of those images, I can't really control the result of my work. The images are accidentally created by the mechanical error of my camera for unknown cause but it's too early to jump into the conclusion that they're trash. Some might think I should discard these images assuming that they failed in giving the effect of representation, which is the theoretical function of photography. However, I consider the phenomenon of these errors as the object of new creation. Since the mechanical error converts part of original image into something irrecognizable during the transmission process, both figurative and non-figurative characteristics are all mixed up in one image and thanks to these two different parts that coexist in the image, my work is reborn as a whole new piece. The Transmission Error series has affected the way I think in many ways and broadened my perspective by showing me a variety of new possibilities to create images. ■ KIMJEONGHOE
