Space for Meditation Realized in the World of Emotional Beauty ● Through the eternal traits of lights and hues reflecting delicate beauty of nature, Nan-Young Bae has explored a poetic and lyrical topic is metaphorical of the static image of nature where consciousness and unconsciousness coexist. Artist Bae, who has been focusing on exploration of lyrical topics, presents unique elements of landscape of sunflowers and trees, which are major motives of the exhibition, as a highly ideal and temperate beauty of space where dual structures of shape and display communicate each other. These elements extend her exclusive territory of artistic expression. The Artist crosses the surrealistic boundaries and reduces a display into changeable space using hues. In this way, the painter demonstrates the awe she feels toward nature with her unique and unlimited perseverance and delicateness. Lights and hues boil down to the sense of absolutely private property in the paintings which are the crystal of artistic energy, and they act as architectural elements and concepts that form a creative space. ● The origin of Nan-Young Bae's art works lies in artistic beauty of implication through natural ingredients. The dualism and spiritual sense of unity emerging in her work of art is achieved by creating the moment of awe and peace, which is the ultimate purpose of art. In her work, trees are driving force for hope and life as the artist intended. Trees are the whole body of sky and land in a symbolic term. They also represent dynamic life as opposed to static life. The temperate expression of empty space sublimates observation of the artist into beautiful duet of lights and hues rather than reproducing what is seen while capturing delicateness of sunflowers. The richness of the bold and dramatic painting overwhelmed by the creation of strong hues is reduced to the beautiful and awesome space in the pure shape of sunflowers and poppies and encounters with the moments beyond time. The paintings are the metaphor speaking for the dormant emotion of human beings extracted from the nature of nature, and they are the multi-layered space of abyss. ● In these paintings, a flower is the symbol of the universe, life, and the unlimited space that can embrace primal simple-ness and everything. Lights are the first creation, and thus the fact that a human being experiences lights is the fact that they encounter the ultimate beings. At the end, lights are connected at its beginning and at its end. The architectural element of the lights and hues of sunflowers lies in the fundamental exploration of light which is the principle of the creation of the universe and source of intelligence. The works of Nan-Young Bae express the power and energy of nature that is extremely rich and complex. It translates the philosophy of originality of space into the impression of the moment through silent exchanges, rather than exploring the depth of a general topic. The flower is reproduced as an object to be stared in the unique lights of its own, through the sublimation of this artistic trend of Bae into something more sensible and emotion. ● Nan-Young Bae's paintings of sunflowers express the gap between space and an object existing in the space depending on the views from which one looks at it. To the artist, the circle shape of sunflowers is seen as a circle as the target of exploring natural images and hues, and it serves as the central medium to organize things around it. The outer space of circle expands unlimitedly whereas the internal space reaches the static state. Thus the image of circle in the painting is reduced to a whole without divisions, and it is also separated from time and space. By denying formulaic expression of painting, Nan-Young Bae utilizes her own formative technique to express natural images. So the resulting images measure the depth of subconscious self and enrich the awareness of nature and the world. The excellence of her painting induces the viewers to accomplish the harmony between visible things and invisible things freely and peacefully. Paintings reflecting the glory of the Bae are those that snap out the ingredients from nature and display them in the painting like a poem. This sophisticated observation and beautiful imagination serve to send her painting to the dimension of meditation. ● In this 14th solo exhibition, various works of Nan-Young Bae express her Western artistic sensibility she had acquired from years of experience in the United States which is harmoniously melt with her Korean style. The landscape of loudly colored poppies, sunflowers, and the expanse of land skillfully expresses the boundaries of time and space of the universe with the dynamic and multi-dimensional changes of brightness and darkness. This perfect density and balance is the result of the combination of unique formative sensibility of the painter with our imagination. In many of her International and solo exhibitions, Nan-Young Bae has attracted attention of viewers with her unique delicateness and internal depth.
