섬유는 기다란 선이다. 그 선들은 서로 계기적 교차를 거듭하면서 평면인 직물의 상태로 적분된다. 그리고 평면의 직물은 사람의 몸을 감싸려는 입체의 공간으로 향하려 한다. 선, 평면, 입체의 수순, 이는 섬유미술이라는 장르에 주어진 질서이자 동시에 기하학적 공간의 질서이기도 하다. ● 모든 예술은 최종적으로 표현을 수반한다. 그런데 섬유미술의 고민은 섬유가 가진 공간적인 질서와 예술로서의 표현이 따로 분리가 잘 안 된다는 데에 있다. 질서와 표현은 서로 대치되는 개념이다. 회화의 경우 레이어(layer)라고 하는 표현의 층은 천의 층위를 무시하거나 이면으로 감추어버린다. 이럴 경우 천으로 된 캔버스는 단지 표현층의 레이어를 위한 지지체로로서의 역할로 만족하고 만다. 물론 슈포르 슈르파스의 경우처럼 캔버스 상층의 표현부위와 하층의 평면 지지체(천)가 똑같은 표현의 강도와 지위로 드러난 적도 있긴 하나 그건 어디까지나 작은 흐름에 속한다 할 것이다.

그런데 섬유미술의 경우는 회화에서처럼 레이어라는, 실재이면서 동시에 가상적이기도 한 층위가 인정되지 않으며 대신 섬유 혹은 천 그 자체가 전면적으로 표현의 주체로 나설 수밖에 없는 불편한 상황에 직면하고 만다. 이 경우 질서와 표현의 층위는 서로 엉켜버리고 마는 사태를 맞이하게 된다. 박하나는 이제까지 섬유미술에 주어진 통념적인 질서를 살짝 비틀었을 때 비로소 드러나는 새로운 표현의 영역과 가능성을 탐색하고 확보하려는 작가다. ■ 황인

Each fiber is a long line. Such lines interlock with each other until they integrate into a plane of fiber. The planes of fibers then approach the three-dimensional space as they materialize into a human body. The sequence of lines, planes, and dimensions is an order given to the genre of fiber art, while also an order of geometric space. ● Art forms ultimately accompany expression. The dilemma of fiber art, however, is in the fact that it is difficult to elicit this artistic expression from the spatial order inherent in fabrics. Order and expression are two almost interchangeable concepts. In painting, the layers of paint either disregard the layer of canvas or totally cover it. In the latter case, the fabric canvas merely fulfills its role as a supporting element of the expressive layers of paint. Of course, there have been instances such as Support-Surface in which the supporting element (the fabric of canvas) is revealed with the same intensity and status as those of the top layer of expression. Such examples, however, can be said to be exceptions confined to a small movement. ● Fiber art, on the other hand, does not recognize either material or virtual layers. Instead, the entirety of the fabric itself must inconveniently function as the medium of expression. In this case, the layers of expression and order are bound to become entangled. ● Hana Park is an artist who searches ways to reveal the expressive potential of fiber art by tweaking the conventions that have been placed upon the genre thus far. ■ HWANGIN
