도시 수집@서울 Urban Archive@Seoul

사람은 도시를 만들고, 우리가 만든 도시는 그만의 독특한 문화를 끊임없이 생산한다. 그렇게 만들어진 흔적들은 도시 곳곳에 산재해 있고, 현대의 도시에서 살아가는 예술가들에게 그런 흔적들은 직접적인 작업의 소재가 되기도 한다. 발전하는 도시의 풍경이나 산물들에 관심을 가지기도 하고, 때로는 재개발되거나 쓸모를 다해 사라져가는 도시의 흔적을 집요한 시선으로 기록하기도 한다. 혹은 산책자로 도시의 이곳 저곳을 기웃거리며 좀 더 개인적인 의미를 가진 대상을 찾아 작업하기도 한다. 도시(서울)를 주제로 기획되는 네 번째 전시인 『도시수집@서울』 전에서는 '수집'을 통해 서울에 대한 주관적인 기억과 역사를 만들어가는 두 작가 장석준과 리금홍을 초대하였다.

장석준은 도시의 이곳저곳을 돌아다니며 산업화된 도시가 만들어낸 산물들을 카메라에 담는다. 주로 도시화의 뒤안길에 있는 변두리 지역, 후미진 뒷골목, 오래된 상가들, 소규모 공장들 등을 찍되 그것들의 부분적인 요들을 수집하여 작가의 컴퓨터에 차곡차곡 모은다. 이미지가 어느 정도 쌓이면 같은 종류끼리 반복적으로 배열하여 독특한 풍경을 만든다. 밤이 되면 종로 3가 뒷골목을 가득 채우는 주홍색 포장마차들, 오래된 동네의 돌담들, 주차장과 상가의 파란 셔터들, 모텔 주차장마다 치렁치렁 걸려있는 비닐 가림막 등은 이런 방식을 통해 새로운 풍경으로 만들어졌다. 우리의 반복되는 일상처럼 이런 풍경들은 반복적으로 배열되면서 독특한 아름다움으로 구조화되었다. 흥미로운 것은, 개인적인 취향으로 모아진 이미지들에 사회적으로 정형화되어 버린 일면들이 저절로 반영되었다는 것이다. 또, 도시를 살아가는 사람들의 이야기와 기억들이 자연스레 묻어나게 되면서 이 도시의 또다른 기억으로 남게 되었다.

장석준이 도시의 외면적인 풍경을 주로 다루었다면, 리금홍은 도시인들의 작은 일상에 주목한다. 작가적인 상상력으로 특정 장소가 갖는 이야기와 시간적, 감각적, 문화적 지층들을 만들고 기록하는 작업을 주로 해 온 리금홍은 사소하게 느껴져 그리 주목하지 않는 사람들의 이야기나 사물 등에 관심을 가진다. 우리에게 너무나 익숙한 자장면의 조리법을 찾아 중국 옌타이에 가기도 했고, 가리봉동에 정착한 조선족의 음식과 언어를 연구하기 위해 신장 위그르까지의 여행도 마다하지 않았다. 성북동 『오래된 집 재생 프로젝트』(2011)에서는 한 사람의 개인적인 역사를 가상으로 상정하고 오래된 집을 그의 기념관처럼 구성하여, 그가 썼을 법한 물건들, 단촐한 살림들을 수집해 전시하기도 했다. 2012년에는 서울 창동의 노인정을 기웃거리며 그 동네 할머니들의 이름과 이야기를 수집하여 전각으로 새겨 전시하기도 했다. 이름 수집의 과정에서 자연스럽게 수집된 할머니들의 과거와 현재의 삶, 미래의 희망은 『규방가사-각명기』라는 소책자로 만들어지기도 했다. ● 이번 전시에서는 전시 공간이 종로구 익선동 서울53호텔에 자리하고 있다는 것을 고려하여 작품을 선정하였다. 장석준은 종로 3가 뒷골목의 밤을 수놓는 포장마차들의 주홍 풍경과 모텔 주차장 커버 모음, 1호선 지하철을 타고 가면서 수집한 지하철 창 밖의 풍경 등을 선보인다. 리금홍은 중국 관광객들과 관련된 프로젝트(2011)를 소개한다. 이 프로젝트는 중국인 관광객들을 대상으로 식사 시간에만 문을 여는 연희동의 기념품 가게를 관찰하여 진행한 것이다. 관광객들이 한국만의 특별한 것이라 여기고 구매하는 기념품 중 8점을 골라 만든 한국 관광 기념 엽서 8종 셋트와 실물, 그리고 기념품 가게에서 색동 한복을 입고 했던 기념품 쇼핑 도우미 퍼포먼스 영상을 함께 전시한다. 이 두 작가가 수집한 서울의 다양한 면면들은 작가 개인의 기억이면서, 동시대를 살아가는 우리들이 충분히 공감할수 있는 기억이자 기록일 것이다. ■ 장유정

We humans make cities, and they consistently give rise to a unique culture. The traces engendered in this way are scattered all over a city, and artists dwelling in a modern city take the motifs for their work from such traces. They have concern for growing urban scenes and things, or persistently document urban redevelopment and urban traces disappearing after use. They also go around here and there in the city and work with objects with individual meaning. ● Jang Suk Joon and Lee Geum Hong who formed a subjective memory and history of Seoul through their 'collecting', are invited to "Urban Archive@Seoul", the fourth exhibition addressing the theme of the city (Seoul). ● Jang Suk Joon captures products derived from an industrialized city, walking around the city. The artist takes photographs of a city's suburban areas alienated from urbanization, obscure back alleys, old shopping districts, and small factories, gathering these partial elements one by one into his computer. With images he collects, Jang creates a unique scene through a repetitive arrangement of images of the same kind. In this way he brings forth a new landscape with scenes such as covered snack stalls in orange in the back alleys of Jongno 3-ga at night; stonewalls in an old village; blue shutters in parking lots and a shopping district; and vinyl fences of motel parking lots. As with our routines, these scenes are repetitively arranged, structuring a distinctive beauty. The images Jang has collected out of his individual interest reflect typical social aspects, and remain as another memory, imbued with the stories and memories of those living in the city. ● While Jang deals with a city's external scenes, Lee Geum Hong takes notice of trifling daily aspects of urban life. Lee has mainly worked on generating narratives of a specific place and shaping temporal, sensuous, and cultural layers with her imagination, paying attention to stories and things people feel as trivial, less attentively. Lee visited Yantai, China, to learn recipes for jajangmyeon so familiar to us and Uygur, Xinjiang, China, to study the food and language of Korean Chinese people residing in Garibong-dong, Seoul. In the Old House Restoration Project (2011) Lee creates someone's imaginary personal history and collects and displays things they probably used in an old house, formed like a memorial hall. In 2012 she called at a senior citizen's center in Chang-dong, Seoul and collected aged women's names and stories. Lee engraved them and displayed them as a seal engraving. Lee made a booklet titled Lady's Narrative Poem-Engraving Names using the material of aged women's past, present life, and future hopes, naturally collected. ● Artworks to be displayed have been chosen in consideration of the exhibit venue in Seoul 53 Hotel located in Iksun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Jang Suk Joon displays orange scenes of snack carts in the back alleys of Jongno 3-ga, the vinyl curtains of motel parking lots, and scenes seen from a subway train on Line No. 1 in Seoul. Lee Geum Hong introduces a project (2011) related to Chinese tourists in Seoul. The project features the souvenir shop of Yeonhee-dong, Seoul open for Chinese tourists only during meal times. The eight postcards and souvenirs tourists often purchase as special things of Korea are exhibited alongside the video showing a performance in which the artist performed as a shopping guide at the shop, wearing Hanbok. A variety of aspects of Seoul the two artists have collected are memories and records we can fully sympathize with, even though they derive from individual memories. ■ Jang, youjung
