본 전시의 주요 컨셉은 특정한 명화들에서 관찰되는 시각 효과와 원리를 참고하여 내 유년시절 인상적이었던 꿈속의 이미지를 재현하거나 미술 심리치료의 원리를 참고하여 그 당시의 트라우마에 관해 입체, 설치작업들로 다루는 것이다. ● 지난 3년 동안 나는 막스 에른스트의「The Forest」(La forêt, 1927~8)나 지오토의「Fight into Egypt」(1304~6) 등에서 전자에 나타난 대상물의 강한 음영 대비와 표면 질감, 후자의 배경 언덕이나 산 등에 발견되는 독특하고 가파른 형태들을 내 어릴 적 꿈속에 등장한 산의 그것들과 비교하며 공감해왔다. 두 그림들 속에서 두드러져 관찰되는 개성적 형태와 색상, 표면 처리의 테크닉들은 이 전시에서 다루는 꿈의 추상적 입체화를 위한 소재로 적용되었다.

2010년 육아방송 TV 프로그램 '그림으로 알아보는 아동심리'는 미술에서 다루는 시각적 신호들과 오브제들을 다루는 관점의 측면에서 나에게 많은 흥미와 호기심을 불러왔다. 프로그램 내 미술 심리치료 전문가가 어린이 그림들에 나타는 무의식적 표현에 대해 분석하고 제안한 미술치료 방법들은 세 가지 입체, 설치작업들의 상징요소들로 차용되었다.「상처 1, 2」(2013)와「치약놀이」(2013)는 나의 유년시절 트라우마와 그것의 시각적 발현에 관한 작업들이다.

드로잉 시리즈는 그 동안 많은 관객들로부터 공감 어린 관심과 함께 그 내용과 사연들에 관한 주목을 이끌어왔다. 주로 개인적인 경험이나 그에 관련된 공상들을 기록화로 남기는 내 드로잉들은 소소한 사연들과 주변에 언급하지 않은 유년 시절의 다양한 추억들, 관찰된 외부의 역사적 사건들에 관한 상상적인 해석과 시각들을 내포하고 있다. 나는 매 장마다 그림을 그릴 때 '어떻게 하면 내가 지금 느끼는 이 사무치는 감정을 감상자에게 가능한 한 동일하게 부여할 수 있을까' 를 절박하게 고민한다. 이 전시에서는 그 고민에 대해 부연자료로서의 텍스트 제시와 대화를 통해 그들이 원하는 한 보다 깊이 공감하는 기회를 갖고자 한다. ■ 강상우

The key concept of this exhibition is visualizing the contents of memorable childhood dreams I had, in reference to visual effects and principles found in certain notable paintings, and producing three-dimensional installations based on past traumas based on the mechanism of art therapy. ● During the past three years, I have been comparing the strong shadow effects, surface textures of Max Ernst's The Forest (La forêt) or Giotto's Fight into Egypt's unique and steep forms in background landscapes such as hills and mountains with the mountains I saw in my own childhood dreams, empathizing with their aesthetics. The original forms, color and surface processing techniques that stand out in the two works were used to produce the abstract and cubic qualities seen in this exhibition. ● The childcare program aired on TV in 2010, titled "Child Psychology in Pictures," incited interest and curiosity in me in terms of the visual signals and perspectives in dealing with objects as seen in the field of art. The art therapy methods presented by the art therapist in the program, analyzing the unconscious expressions found in children's drawings, inspired the symbolism in the three types of cubic installations. Trauma 1, 2 (2013) and Toothpaste Game (2013) are about my childhood traumas and their visual expressions. ● The drawing series have attracted many viewers' empathy and interest regarding the contents and background stories. My drawings, which mainly document my personal experiences or related reveries, harbor imaginative interpretations and perspectives regarding trivial incidents, various childhood memories I have kept to myself, and external historical events I have observed. I always ponder on how "I could convey this intense emotion I feel to the viewers, how I could make them feel the same way," each time I draw another piece. In this exhibition, I wish to present accompanying texts and dialogues to deepen the channel of empathy. ■ KANGSANGWOO
