침묵의 세계 (le monde du silence) #1

『침묵의 세계』는 흔히 인터넷이나 여러 매체들에서 볼 수 있는 자연과 동물의 이미지를 차용하여 작업의 배경으로 다루고 있다. 복제 된 가상의 이미지 속에는 마치 그 속이 현실인 양 믿고 지배하려하는 탐험가이자 모험가가 서 있다. 우스꽝스러운 가짜 소품들을 착용한 채 진지한 포즈를 취하는 인물은 자본주의의 지배 아래 위치한 현실적 판단능력이 흐려진 사람들의 살아가는 실제 모습과 어느 정도 일치할 것이라 생각된다.

『침묵의 세계』는 보편화된 일상생활을 연출된 시각으로 보여준다. 이는 마치 자본주의 사회에 대한 비판적 시각을 품은 찰리 채플린의 표현 방식을 연상시킨다. 투사되는 가상의 이미지와 일상적 공간의 조합은 일획적인 대량 복제물 속에서 살아가는 현실을 반영한다. 달리 말해 익숙해진 생활은 자본사회의 부산물로 가득히 침투되어버린 현실이며 그 속에서 우리는 지배당한 사유를 가진 채 살아가고 있다. 화면 속 인물과 사물들의 연출의 효과는 우리의 모습이 어떠한지에 대하여 의구심 없이 지내는 상황을 보여준다는 점에 있다.

인류사의 문명화를 돌아보면 『침묵의 세계』에서 핵심적 키워드인 진보적 사상, 즉 계몽의 목표는 인간으로부터 공포를 제거하고 인간으로 하여금 지배자가 되도록 하는 것이었다. 인류의 진보는 자연과의 동일화에서 벗어난 지배욕으로부터 생겨났다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 현재의 시점에서 남기는 곳 없이 계몽된 지표를 보면 참과 거짓의 경계가 모호해짐은 물론 그 안에 살아가는 인간의 판단 또한 붕괴되어버린다. ■ 김주현

The World of Silence(le monde du silence) ● The World of Silence derived from the title of a documentary film that was directed by the oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The unexplored underwater world was discovered and filmed to show the world of marine life. Due to the film, scuba diving equipment, which was made by Jacque-Yves Cousteau, became well known to the world. The film shows the process of conquest and domination of the underwater world. The theme of his documentary relates to the keywords of my current work The World of Silence ● In The World of Silence, the artist appropriates images of nature and animals that are commonly seen on the Internet and in different types of media to create his artwork. In the world of reproduction of virtual images, there is a man who is an explorer and an adventure. He pretends to believe that everything is real and tries to dominate the world of virtual reality. The man who is wearing ridiculous fake props and posing seriously coincides with the people who are under the control of capitalism, and making poor judgment in their daily lives. ● The World of Silence shows the ordinary aspects of everyday life from a staged point of view. This reminds us of the way Charlie Chaplin expressed his criticism of capitalism. The combination of virtual images and everyday space that is projected on the screen reflects the era of standardized mass reproduction. In other words, accustomed lifestyle is the reality created by byproducts of capitalism which penetrate deeper into our society, and people live in the world where their thoughts are controlled by capitalism. The staged effects of figures and objects in the paintings show us that we live our daily lives without having any doubts about the society we live in. ● Looking back at civilization in history, eliminating fear and generating the urge to dominate in human beings were the goals of the Enlightenment. It is also the important keyword of The World of Silence, which represents progressive ideology in concept. The progress of human civilization began when it broke free from the identification of nature. However, by looking at the indicators of enlightenment from the present point of view, we see that the boundary between truth and lies is becoming ambiguous as our judgment becomes disintegrated. ■ KIMJUHYUN
