꽃들아! 춤을 추어라 Dance Flowers!

시대를 거슬러 조선후기 혜원의 작품을 통해 미묘한 남녀 간의 심리를 읽을 수 있었다면, 오늘 마주하는 전현숙의 작품에서는 작가 개인의 훨씬 복잡다단한 내면의 감정들과 만나게 된다. 그리고 우리는 그 다양한 감정들이 결코 작가 개인의 감정만이 아님을 발견하게 된다. 자신의 외형뿐만 아니라 비밀스럽게 간직하고 있는 속마음을 누군가에게 들춰내 보인다는 것은 그리 쉬운 일 이 아니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 전현숙은 두려움, 설렘, 억압, 자유, 욕망, 행복 등 마음 깊이 내재되어 있는 자신의 감정들을 오래전부터 작품을 통해 보여주고 있다. 그렇다면 그녀는 왜 서랍 깊은 곳에 보관해야 할 자신의 일기장과도 같은 속마음을 드러내 놓았을까? 아마도 자신의 감정을 드러냄으로써 마음의 위안을 얻고, 마음 깊이 잠재되어 있는 불안의 감정들을 극복해보고자 함이지 않을까 짐작해 본다.

전현숙에게 있어 작품은 대화의 窓이자 자신의 본 모습을 발견할 수 있는 거울이라 할 수 있다. 그래서 그가 표현하는 모든 것들은 작가의 진실한 독백이며, 그 독백은 작가를 자아성찰의 길로 이끈다. 전현숙의 작품을 오래 지켜본 사람이라면 그녀의 작품이 형식적으로 얼마나 큰 변화가 있었는지 쉽게 알 수 있다. 분할 된 화면구성, 단순하고 거친 이미지, 강렬한 붓 터치가 10여년 전 그녀의 작품 경향이었다면 정제된 화면구성, 섬세한 장식표현, 정형화된 인물묘사 등은 최근 그녀의 변화된 작품을 말해주고 있다. 그러나 화면상에 나타나는 이러한 뚜렷한 변화에도 불구하고 작가는 일관되게 사람을 그린다. 그리고 그 사람을 통해 우리는 작가가 느끼는 동일한 감정을 공유하게 된다. 이제 우리는 그녀가 마치 자기 자신에게 "꽃들아! 춤을 추어라" 라고 외치는 것처럼 보다 자유롭고 희망적인 삶을 함께 꿈꾸어 보자. ■ 임종영

While we can read subtle emotions between male and female figures in Hyewon's work of the late Joseon Dynasty era, we are able to read more complex and mixed feelings inside when we encounter Jeon Hyun-sook's work. And then, we realize that this diversified range of feelings is not just artist's own one. ● It is not easy to expose private physical features, and moreover innermost feelings kept to oneself. Nevertheless, through her works Jeon has been disclosing her own intimate feelings, such as fear, excitement, repression, freedom, desire, happiness, and so on. ● Then, why is she laying herself open to us, as if she reveals us her inner state of mind equivalent to her diary which should be kept by herself in the back of a drawer? It is assumed that she finds the solace of mind and overcomes anxiety by revealing her own feelings. ● A work of art for her is like a window for conversation and a mirror which she can find her true self. Thus, what she shows us through her work is her sincere soliloquy and this enables her to reach the point of introspection. ● If you are the one who has known about Jeon's works for a long time, it will be easy to catch that her work has been through a lot of changes in terms of its form. It can be said that her style of ten-year-ago used to be characterized as sectored composition, simple and rough image, and powerful brush strokes, but now refined composition, detailed representation, and stylized description of figures. Even though these appreciable changes, the artist consistently depicts human beings. Through these human figures, we share the feelings of the artist. ● Now, it is time for us to dream freer and more hopeful dreams, as if she shouts out to herself, "Dance, Flowers!" ■ LIMJONGYOUNG
