Missing Home

길을 떠난 이에게 집으로 가는 길이 보이듯이, 돌연 마주할 순간 순간, 덧없음으로 의미가 생기고, 상실함으로 채워지고, 부정함으로써 무한한 긍정이 다가온다고 믿는다. 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이에서 나에게도 예술 행위가 여전히 지속된다면, 어쩌면 아무것도 아닌, 이곳에서 하나의 이야기가 필요했다. 첫 개인전 때 작품을 철수하며 집으로 향했던 오후의 감각이 아직도 손에 만져진다. 어릴 때 가족들이 어딘가 가버리고 빈 집에 혼자 있었던 오후와 비슷했다. 쓸쓸한 마음이 들어 낮잠을 자고 일어나보니 어느덧 일상의 저녁 풍경이 이어지고 있을 때의 그 기분, 오롯이 혼자 마주했던 그 공기의 두터움으로부터 이 작업이 시작되었다. 나의 이야기가 시간을 등 진 살아있는 모든 것들에게 위로가 되기를 바란다.

Missing Home 은 잃어버린 사라진 집, 그리운 집 두 가지 의미를 내포하고, 또 그 의미가 서로 충돌하고 있다. 이는 사라져서 그리운 그래서 붙잡고자 하는, 유한한 삶 속에서의 예술 행위를 은유한다. 수족관 같이 부유하는 공간, 사라지는 작품, 사라지는 작품을 위한 전시, 이 모든 것은 어떤 이야기의 무대이다. 결국, 사라지는 것은 무엇이고 남아있는 것은 무엇인가, 예술이 삶에 삶이 예술에게 어떤 교집합을 이루며 채우고 또 비우는가에 대한 물음들이 남을 것이다. ■ 최성임

Like the irony that those who left home can see the path leading back home, I believe unexpected moments that we all face assume meaning due to their fleeting and transient nature and are filled because of losses. I also believe that denial brings infinite affirmation. If I am to continue to exist as an artist between the visible and the invisible, I need a story now—which perhaps is a moment of nothing—and I need it here My hands still remember the sensations they had when I was coming home after withdrawing all the works from my first solo exhibition. It was an afternoon, and it felt like an afternoon on which I had been left alone at home as a child after the rest of the family had gone somewhere. I was melancholy, so I took a nap. When I later woke up to the ambience of a typical evening, I had to face the thickness of the air all alone, and this prodded me to do this work. I hope my story will extend comfort to every living thing who have turned their backs on time. ● The title Missing Home connotes two meanings of a home that has been lost and of the state of missing your home, with the two meanings conflicting with each other in that title. The title is also a metaphor for an artist's act of creating during a limited span of life, reaching toward something that is missing, and thus that is missed. A space of floating like an aquarium, works that eventually disappear, and an exhibition of those disappearing works—all these constitute a stage for a certain story. They will leave behind questions: what will have disappeared and what will remain at the end of the day? What is the intersection between life and art? How do life and art fill and empty each other? ■ CHOISUNGIM
