Red Queen Effect

얼마간 삶과 죽음의 경계 선상에서 죽음의 문턱에 근접한 일련의 경험에 직면했던 일이 있었다. 당시 신체의 식물 같은 느낌이나 의식의 비정상적 흐름이 자못 비의적(秘儀的)이라 느꼈다. 외상성 즉, 육체적 고통을 유발하는 정신적 근원인 트라우마(trauma)는 이러한 지독한 기억에서 기인하였다. 계통발생학적 차원에서 인간의 '고통'은 육체적 고통에서 끝나지 않고 인류의 '발전'에 기여한다. 인류에게 '발전'이 주어지는 것은 진화적 상관관계와 연관되지 않을 수 없다. 고통은 인간에게 본능적으로 기억됨과 동시에 인류가 외부로부터 대항할 수 있는 힘 또는 방어력을 생성시킨다고 해석될 수 있다. 미국의 진화학자 밴 베일른(L. Van Valen)은 이러한 평형 관계를 '붉은 여왕 효과(Red Queen Effect)'라고 정의했다.

이러한 원형적 순환 과정과 윤회(輪廻)가 맞닿아 있는 지점에 천착하여, 진화의 상징으로서 도상(icon)을 차용하여 가시화하는 행위는 정체성(identity)과도 무관하지 않으며, 동시에 무의식에서 피어오르는 먼 기억과 회상을 통해 이루어진 불성(佛性)은 '달콤한 고행'인 작업 행위로서 구현된다.

I recently experienced the near death moment on the boundary line between life and death. At that very moment, near vegetable state of physical self and the abnormal flow of thoughts were felt surrealistic. To me, the pains were standing on the thin line somewhere between life and death. The painful reminiscence of the physically struggling experience developed trauma within myself, which is the mental basis that triggers severe pain. Base on the phylogencal point of view, the pains of human beings do not just end on the physical level but it continues to contribute to the development of humankinds. This given chance of development (to humankinds) is closely related to the concept of evolution. Pains are instinctually remembered by humans and at the same time, it creates power or more specifically, defensive power within oneself against the outside world. American evolutionist, L. Van Valen coined the term 'Red Queen Effect' to portray this parallel relation. I have fixed my view on the place where this type of cyclical process and the eternal cycle of birth encounter. The act of visualization by adopting the Buddhistic icon that is the symbol of evolution and rebirth is closely related with my identity. Simultaneouly, the nature of Buddhism that is completed by unconscious reminiscence and retrospection has been realized by the sweet penance of the artistic work. ● "For those who are not too slow nor too fast and lives in vain, and for those who are lost, the world is discarded.
