집시의 시간 Time of The Gypsies

놀이에 대한 회상의 연작들에서, 나는 상자 속의 연출된 세계로 들어간다. 난 많은 아이들이 그렇듯 어린 시절엔 장롱 속이나 책상 밑에 들어가 놀기를 좋아했다. 소꿉놀이를 하던 어린 시절로 돌아가는 듯, 내게 상자 같은 좁은 공간은 최고의 휴식처이자 놀이터이다. 어른이 된 지금도 어찌보면 크게 달라진건 없는 것 같다. 호기심 많은 어린아이처럼 새로운 세상을 알고 싶다가도 좁은 방안에 틀어박혀 나만의 세계에 갖혀있고 싶은 날이 연결된다. 구체적인 내삶과 일상이 또다른 세계와 꿈에 접목되어 내가 만들어내는 이미지는 지극히 정적이면서도, 세부적으로 동적이다. 기억으로서의 사물들과 추억으로서의 공간은 미로처럼 이어지며 그것은 팀버튼의 영화처럼 환타지하고 동화같은 작업으로 연결되길 소망해본다.

신비스럽거나 몽환적인 분위기를 만드는 데 조명은 가장 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 미니어쳐 작업에서는 자연 조명을 차단하고 최대한 자체 조명만을 설치해 놓는다. 이번 미니어쳐 작업은 그와는 달리 조명을 하지않고 황량함마저 감도는 분위기의 공간을 만들려고 했다. 사적이고 비밀스럽거나 은밀한 장소를 상자 속에 담아 역으로 노출시키는 방법으로 내 주변 공간을 새로운 무대 위에 올린다. 그 무대가 놓여지는 화면안에는 정체를 정확히 알 수 없는 모순적인 충동이 나타나는데 작고 안락하며 고독한 곳을 원하는 욕구 뿐 아니라 낯선 여행지나 술집에서의 상호작용을 원하는 욕구도 존재한다. 보헤미안의 샌프란시스코(원제: Writer's San Francisco)란 책에서는 이런 것을 다락방 욕구와 카페 욕구로 표현하고 있다. 이러한 욕구들이 충돌하면서 보는 이들을 천진스런 상상 속으로 데리고 가 그 곳에서 이런저런 꿈을 꾸어 볼 수 있었으면 하는 마음이다. 나의 작은 무대는 현실의 모습을 그대로 닮은 환상이다.

내게 특별한 장소가 미니어쳐로 제작되고 다시 그것이 평면에 펼쳐진 낯선 풍경속으로 들어가면서 서로 다른 공간과 공간 또 내가 그안에서 만나는 것이다. 또한 먼저 그려진 그림들이 뒤늦게 그려지는 작품 속에 언뜻언뜻 보이면서 시간의 흐름이 드러난다. 어제의 작업이 오늘 그림 속 배경으로 등장하는 것이다. 앙증맞게 드러나는 이전 작업들이 모든 작업에서 연결고리가 되어 끝없이 나타나고 있다. 마치 뫼비우스의 띠처럼. 시간이 교차하는 그 곳은 그저 바라보는 대상에서 벗어나 생각의 움직임을 유발하는 연극적 공간이다. 그곳이 낯익은 공간이든 낯선 공간이든 작은 무대가 되어 그 곳에서 벌어질 이야기들을 상상하게 한다. 사람이 없는 텅 빈 공간을 응시하다 보면 공간에 대한 상상력과 사고의 움직임이 생긴다. 그 안에서 지금 막 무슨 일이 일어났었고 또 앞으로 무슨 일이 생겨날지 추측해 볼 수도 있다. 자유를 갈망하는 어른이 된 내가 만들어내는 기억과 추억으로서의 세상. ■ 권인숙

In my series of reflection on play, I walk into the world made up in a box. In my childhood, I always liked to play in the closet or under the desk, as any kids do. Cramped spaces like boxes are the best resting place as well as the best playground as if I'm going back to that time. Nothing seems to be changed even as I have grown up until now. Days come and go from ones in which I want to know a new world as if I were a curious kid, to others in which I want to be stuck into the cramped room and be caught up in my own world. My routine life is sticked together with another world of my dream which makes the image of my works bear still outlook and dynamic details at the same time. Objects as my memory and spaces as my reminiscences go on mysteriously and build up fantasies and fairy tails similar to Tim Burton movies. ● The lighting is most important in creating mysterious and dreamlike looks. Usually I have used only inside lightings excluding outside lightings for my miniatures. This time, I used no inside lightings in order to produce desolateness. I present my private and secret places on the new stages by putting them into boxes. The scenes with the stages hold conflicting impulses such as urge towards small, cozy and solitary places or urge towards interactions in strange travel places or pubs. Eric Maisel names them as garret urge and café urge in "A Writer's San Francisco: A Guided Journey for the Creative Soul." The conflict of the impulses brings the audience into the naive imagination where they can dream of something or other. My small stages are fantasies resembling the looks of reality. ● My favorite places are built as a miniature, and the miniatures are laid in strange landscapes on canvas. Different spaces meet each other in there as well as meet me. Earlier paintings appear inside later paintings so that they reveal the flow of time. Paintings of yesterday present themselves as background objects in paintings of today. Tiny appearances of the earlier paintings are repeated endlessly so that they become chains binding my works. It is like a Mobius strip. Where the times cross gets out of being just watched and becomes the theatrical place incurring flow of thought. The place, whether it is familiar or strange, becomes a small stage on which people can imagine stories. Staring at peopleless empty space makes the audience imagine about the space and their thought flow. They could guess what just happened in that space or what will happen there. The world of memory and reminiscence, built by myself who is a grown-up craving for freedom. ■ Insook Kwon
