뱀은 봄에 脫皮를 한다

뱀 ● 다가오는 2013년은 60년 만에 돌아오는 흑사(黑巳)의 해이다. 뱀은 예부터 신화, 전설, 민담에 자주 언급되며 인간 문화에 깊숙이 자리해왔다. 매서운 눈에 징그러운 몸체를 가지고 있고 독을 품고 있기도 한 뱀은 부정적인 이미지로 인간에게 공포감을 주고 불쾌한 감정을 불러일으켰다. 그런 반면 뱀은 역사 속에서 수호신의 상징으로 인식되기도 하며, 표피 무늬의 규칙성과 화려함 등으로 인간에게 매혹적이고 긍정적인 이미지를 주기도 하였다. 이처럼 뱀은 숭배와 배척의 양가성(ambivalence)을 지닌다. 또한 자연의 이치에 순응하며 겨울철 내내 죽은 듯 땅 속에 웅크리고 있다가 허물을 벗고 과감히 자기 변신을 하며 지속적으로 성장한다. 이 같은 뱀을 테마로 다양한 전공의 작가들이『뱀은 봄에 탈피를 한다』라는 주제를 중심으로 작업에 임하였다.

탈피 그리고 핑크붓다(Pink Buddha) ● 프로젝트 아티스트 그룹 핑크붓다(Pink Buddha)는 '뱀은 성장할 때 허물을 벗는다. 그리고 탈피하지 못한 뱀은 생명을 잃고 만다'는 점에 착안하여 이번 첫 전시를 기획하였다. 기획자 조수연(동국대대학원 불교미술전공 박사과정)을 주축으로 한 핑크붓다 구성원(이명아, 이정은, 전경희, 정금률, 정윤영, 허효진)의 전공 분야는 회화(불교회화 ‧ 동양화 ‧ 서양화), 패션, 불교학, 디자인경영, 사운드아트 등 제각각이며 전시되는 작품 또한 회화, 공예, 의상, 설치, 음향 등으로 다양하다. 다양한 시각에서 하나의 주제를 놓고 각자 불교적 시각으로 해석하고자 한 실험적인 전시이자 관람객이 종교예술이라는 무거운 주제에서 벗어나서 좀 더 친근감을 갖고 접근하게끔 유도한 관객 참여형 전시이다. 종교예술의 형식적 탈피가 아닌 진정한 불교적 의미를 되찾고자하는 것에 뜻을 두고 기획되었으며, 특히 설치작업에 있어서는 구성원 모두 공동으로 작업하고 그 완성을 대중에게 맡기는 작업형태로 대중과 작가들이 함께 작품을 만들어 나가는 열린 전시로 기획되었다. ● 이번 전시에서는 핑크붓다의 기본 개념, 즉 열려있는 불교사상에 중점을 두고 하나의 주제 아래 다양한 관점을 자유롭게 표현하고자 하였다. 더불어 종교라는 그 자체만으로는 무겁게 자리한 불교예술을 보다 친숙하고 편하게 대중에게 알려서 불교의 본질적인 이해를 돕고자하였다.

Pink Buddha에 대하여 ● 불교에서 일반적으로 佛은 金人으로 불리기도 한다. 그것은 佛의 고귀함 정신을 金에 비유한 것이다. 즉 고귀한 정신을 가진 존재의 異名이다. 그러나 불교가 발생하고 발전 ․ 변모하며 그 같은 초기 이념은 사라지고 형식만이 남아 현재의 불교는 그 형식만을 추앙하며 쫒고 있는 것이 현실이다. 지금의 불교는 대중을 수용하며 불교의 정신을 알리기보다는 종교라는 무거운 주제로 대중이 다가서기 어려운 권위적인 불교가 되어 버렸다. ● 불교의 중심 이념 가운데에는 慈悲心이 있다. 자비심은 포용과 수용을 근간으로 한다. 그 같은 포용과 수용은 33관음 등의 변화관음을 만들어 내기도 하였다. "핑크 붓다" 또한 그 같은 변화관음의 의미를 지닌다. 즉 수많은 색 가운데 현대인의 사고에서 볼 때 가장 어울리지 않을 것으로 판단되는 다소 가벼운 색 "핑크"를 극단적으로 불에 가하여, 불이 그 어떤 색, 그 어떤 이념도 수용하고 포용하며 나아가는 불교를 상징적으로 보이고자하는 것이다. 색을 구분하는 붓다가 아닌 그 어떤 색도 수용하며 나아가는 불교의 정신을 세우고자 하는 불을 상징한다. 핑크붓다는 불교를 알려나감에 있어 규정된 규칙과 형식이 아닌 그 정신을 바로 세우고자 하는 활동의 하나로 Gold Buddha가 아닌 'Pink Buddha'가 되고자 한다. ■ 조수연_정윤영

A SNAKE SHEDS ITS SKIN IN SPRING ● SNAKE This coming year of 2013 is the year of snake, or blacksnake. Snakes were frequently mentioned in myths, legends, and folktales, and have been deeply rooted in our culture. Its fierce eyes and repulsive body brings up a creepy sensation together with its negative image of bearing a fatal poison. But at the same time, in our history, snakes are also considered as a symbol of patron saint. Its regular pattern and flamboyant skin also gives out a fascinating image of positiveness to human beings. Thus, the image of snakes hold ambivalence of being the subject of worship and expulsion. The Snake curls up under the ground throughout the winter and takes a deadly sleep. It corresponds well with the nature and aggressively transforms itself. Thus, it slips out of its skin and continuously grows up. The topic of this special exhibition is follows; 'snake sheds its skin in the spring' It is being held on Jan, 11th 2013 with a number of artists with different majors. ECDYSIS AND PINK BUDDHA ● The project's artist group, 'Pink Buddha' planned this first exhibition with the ideas of 'snakes sheds its skin when growing up but it loses it life when not.' The exhibition director Su-youn Jo(Dong-guk University, Graduate School of Buddhist art, doctoral courses) and the teammates (Myung-ah Lee, Jung-eun Lee, Kyeong-hee Chon, Yun-young Jeong, Hyo-jin Huh, Geum-yool Jung) with different majors (traditional Buddhist arts, oriental painting, western painting, fashion, design management and sound art works) participated in this exhibition. The art works to be exhibited are painting, crafts, costumes, installation, acoustical and much more. This is an experimental exhibition with an aim to interpret the identical subject with different yet with Buddhist perspective. In addition, this present exhibition attempts to familiarize the audience on such heavy topic of religious art. The purpose of this exhibition is not to break away from the formation but to reclaim the meaning of true Buddhist art. As for the installation work, all members collaborated and let the public complete the art work. Its intention is to have an open exhibition to be together with the audience. ● The basic concept of Pink Buddha is to freely express diverse perspectives under the one theme of Buddhism. Furthermore, the main purpose of the exhibition is to boost the public understanding of Buddhism that is considered quite a heavy topic. ● "For those who are not too slow nor too fast and lives in vain, and for those who are lost, the world is discarded. Just like the snake sheds its old skin." (Sutta-nipāta) ALL ABOUT PINK BUDDHA ● Typically in Buddhism, 'Buddha' is also known as a 'Gold Man'. It indicates that the noble spirit of the Buddha is likened to gold. Hence, 'Gold Man' is another name of the presence of the noble spirit. But when Buddhism develops and transforms, the initial ideology disappears and only the form remains. This is the reason why we are facing the reality where we only chase after only the form. Buddhism now became a difficult subject of authoritative religion rather than accepting general public by spreading the spirit of Buddhism. ● In the center of the Buddhism lies compassion and it is based on benevolence and inclusion. This is the same benevolence and inclusion that created Changing Avalokiteshvara (變化觀音) which includes 33 Avalokiteshvara (33觀音). 'Pink Buddha' also shares the meaning of Changing Avalokiteshvara (變化觀音). Based on modern man's perspective, among many other colors, color pink is considered as inappropriate yet shallow color. It means that we must accept and embrace any ideology to display the symbolic Buddhism. By accommodating any colors, rather than separating colors, this represents fire that facilitates Buddhist spirit. 'Pink Buddha' is to spread out the truth value of Buddhism and to find the true spirit rather than being trapped in forms and regulations. One of the activities that represent this movement is symbolized as 'Pink Buddha' instead of 'Gold Buddha'. ■
