Ode to the Present '지금'을 위한 송가

'지금'을 위한 송가 ● 여기에 바람이 가득한 그림들이 있다. 대기는 불안에 떨며 두텁게 자신을 밀어내고 있다. 그러면서 뭉치고 흩어지며 끊임없이 스스로 움직여나간다. 여기에 그 바람을 그린 그림들이 있다. 그의 이전 그림에는 바람에 나부끼며 아름답게 흔들리는 수많은 대상들로 가득하다. 편재하는 바람. 세상에는 온통 바람뿐이고 그의 외부에는 어떤 것도 존재하지 않았다. 그렇게 바람이 모든 것을 지배하고 있었다. 그런데 모든 것이 달라졌다. 이번 작품들에서 작가는 그 바람 속으로 작은 비행기들을 띄웠다. 여기서 비행기는 바람에 의해 흔들릴 수 있는 수많은 오브제들 중의 하나가 아니다. 그것은 바람 안으로 들어가 바람 안에서 자신의 의지를 가지고 바람에 거슬러 움직일 수 있는 유일한 물체이다. 이 단절 혹은 전회는 무엇을 의미하는가? 이전에 작가가 바람의 바깥에서 그 소용돌이 안을 물끄러미 들여다보는 관찰자였다면, 그리고 절망적으로 흩어지는 꽃잎들을 보며 진리를 묵상하는 사색가였다면, 이번 작품들에서는 직접 비행기의 조종간을 잡고 두터운 공기 사이를 헤쳐 나가는 실천가이고 현재의 무수한 위험을 무릅쓰는 모험가를 자임하고 있다. 그러니 "바람을 어떻게 그릴 것인가?"라는 이전의 문제는 이번 전시를 통해서, "바람 속에서 어떻게 살아갈 것인가?"의 질문으로 바뀌고 있는 듯 보인다.

바람에 대한 그의 그림은 분할된 두 면을 자주 등장시켜 왔다. 그러나 이전 그림에서의 한 면이 바람의 안쪽, 그러니까 우리의 시야에 들어오지 않는 사물의 이면을 들추고 있었다면, 이번 그림들에서 한 면은 우리의 여행이 시작한 과거의 혼돈스러운 한 시점, 혹은 그 여행이 지향하는 꿈결 같은 한 시점을 상징하고 있다. ● 비행기는 어떻게 바람 속을 여행하는가? 그것은 자신만의 힘으로 바람을 만들어내면서 지면에서 발을 떼고, 바람에 저항함으로써 대지에 안전하게 안길 때까지 목표로 삼은 장소로 향하며 끊임없이 흔들린다. 저항은 비행의 조건이다. 모든 것이 우리에게 맞서서 일어서는 것처럼 느껴진다면, 그때는 다름 아닌 비행을 위한 순간이다. 바람이 우리 등 뒤에서 불어온다면, 그것이 무슨 비행일 수 있을까. 바람에 떠밀려가는 비행기가 있다면 그것은 더 이상 비행기가 아니다. 연이 떠 있는 것은 바람에 맞서기 때문이다. 연이 더욱 높이 오르는 것은 바람에 더욱 맞서기 때문이다. 비행기도 그러하다. 그리고 우리의 삶 역시 다르지 않다.

비행기의 엔진 소리를 나지막이 들려주는 이 그림들에는 "'지금'을 위한 송가 Ode to the Present"라는 제목이 붙어 있다. 누구나 지금의 순간에게 바치는 자신만의 송가를 마음에 품고 산다. 그것은 불가능한 시도이기 때문에 지극히 사적이며 따라서 독백이지만, 현재의 순간을 의미화하고 그것을 숭고한 빛들로 장식하는 일은 모든 이들의 내면 속에서 일어나고 있다. 그러니 "지금을 위한 송가"는, 지금을 살아가는 가장 행복한 노래를 상징한다. 그리고 여기서 새로운 용기와 의지들이 생겨난다. 작가는 스스로를 그리고 우리를 따뜻하게 위무하고 있다.

철학자 화이트헤드는 다음과 같이 말한 바 있다. "진정한 발견의 방법은 비행기의 비행과 흡사하다. 그것은 개별적인 관찰이라는 대지에서 출발하여, 상상력에 의한 일반화라는 희박한 대기권을 비행한다. 그리고 합리적 해석으로 예민해지고 새로워진 시선으로 관찰을 위해 착륙한다." (A. N. Whitehead, "과정과 실재 Process and Reality") 화이트헤드의 이 비행이 인식론적 발견이라면, 작가의 비행은 인간학적 발견이라 부를 수 있다. 작가는 지금 비행 중이다. 희미한 공기를 뚫고 여행하면서 무료하고 막연한, 이 덧없는 길을 견디고 있는 중이다. 그리고 곧 새로운 시선으로 새로운 행복을 발견하게 될 것이다. 비행 이전에 이륙이 있었으며, 아마도 언젠가는 대지에 착륙할 것이다. 그곳은 처음 출발한 곳이되, 전혀 다른 곳이리라. 왜냐하면 한 번의 그 긴 여행이 본래 고향인 대지를 온통 바꾸어 버렸기 때문이다. 세월이 흘렀다. 흙은 말랐으며 물은 더 많아졌고 우리의 신체 또한 낡은 것이 되어버렸다. 그럼에도 우리는 더욱 행복해져 있을 것이다. ■ 김수영

Ode to the Present ● Here, you see paintings full of wind. The air is pushing itself away while shaking in anxiety. It continues to move as the air gathers and scatters. The wind is portrayed in these paintings. The previous paintings by the artist were full of numerous objects that beautifully flutter in the wind. The omnipresent wind. The world is full of wind and nothing exists around it. This is how wind dominates everything. However, everything changed. The artist introduces small planes flying in the wind in her new paintings. Planes are not like other numerous objects that can be shaken by the wind. The only object that can fly through and against the wind under its own will is a plane. What does this severance or revolution mean? In her previous work, the artist was an observer looking into the whirlpool from outside of the wind and a thinker meditating on the truth while looking at the flower petals scattering through the wind. While in her recent work, she is a doer flying through the thick air by controlling the stick herself and an adventurer taking all kinds of risks. Therefore the previous question "how can you paint the wind?" is changed to "how can you live through the wind?" according to this exhibition. ● The artist's paintings about wind is often segmented into two sides. In her previous paintings, one side portrayed the inside of the wind, which exposes the other side of an object that is outside one's view. Yet, the paintings in this exhibition include one side that shows either a confusing moment in the past where our journey began or a dream-like moment of aspiring for a journey. ● How does a plane travel through the wind? A plane takes off by creating its own wind and heads toward its destination through turbulent conditions while hoping for a safe landing. Resistance is a condition for flying. When it feels like everything is against us, it is time to fly. If the wind flies from behind, what kind of flight would it be? A plane is no longer a plane if it is pushed alongside the wind. The reason a kite can fly is because it faces against the wind. Planes are like that as well. Our lives are not that different from planes. ● These paintings, which let us hear the rather soft engine sound of the plane, are titled as "Ode to the Present". Everyone lives and carries their own ode to the present. As this was an impossible attempt, the ode was very personal. Although it can be considered as a monologue, the task of signifying the present moment and decorating it with sublime lights happens within everyone's hearts. Accordingly, "Ode to the Present" symbolizes the happiest song of living the present. Moreover, new kinds of courage and will arise from here. The artist paints herself and offers us a 'warm' consolation. ● According to the philosopher, Whitehead, "A true discovery is similar to a plane's flight. It starts from the ground based on an individual observation and flies through the thin air of generalization created by one's imagination. Also, it lands as one gets sensitive due to its rational interpretation and observes under a new perspective." (A. N. Whitehead, "Process and Reality") If flying is an epistemic discovery according to Whitehead, the artist recalls flying as a humanistic discovery. The artist is flying now. She is travelling through thin air and tolerating this tedious, boring and empty path. The artist will discover new happiness under a new perspective. If there was a take-off before the flight then it will be followed with a landing. It is where the artist first took off, but became an entirely different place. The reason is that one long journey changed its original home 'land'. Time has passed. The ground is dry and there are more water, whereas our bodies grew older.
