몇 년 혹은 몇 십 년을 식물인간인체로 지내다 기적적으로 깨어난 사람들의 기사를 읽은 적이 있다. 그들은 끊임없이 자신이 살아 있음을 마음속으로부터 외쳤다고 한다.

식물인간의 가족들은 주변 사람들에게 수도 없이 환자에 대해서 포기할 것을 권유 받는다고 한다. 살아있는 상황에서 자기를 포기할 것을 권유받는 가족의 모습을 지켜보는 식물인간 당사자들의 모습을 떠올리며, 그저 움직이지 못하고 표현하지 못할 뿐인 그들을 아무것도 느끼지 못한다고 단정 짓는 어떤 판단에 대해 잠시 멈추어 보고 싶었다.

그것은 사람처럼 섬세한 감정이 없을 것이라 여기는 동물들에 대한 판단마저 다시 생각해 보도록 했으며, 움직임마저 보이지 않는 식물에 대해선 어떻게 이야기를 할 수 있을 것인지…, 감정이 없다고 쉽게 단정 지을 수 있을 것인가에 대한 모든 판단의 유보로부터 식물에 대한 작업을 시작하게 되었다.

철사로 뜨개질하듯이 변형된 형태로 엮어가며 마치 동물인 듯이 움직일 수 있고, 감정이 있는 살아있는 생명임을 표현할 수 있으면 좋겠다. 그렇게 쉽게 단정 짓고, 알고자하는 노력이 인색했던 그들에게 다시 말을 건네 보고자 한다. ■ 이원경

I've read the article about people who live as a vegetable for several years or for decades. They've constantly yelled at themselves inwardly which they are alive. ● The families of neomort are continuously recommended to give up the patient by people. Recalling the neomort's figure and their eyes which are gazing at their family's situation, I'd like to stop thinking of judgement about the neomort who doesn't feel anything which makes me think again about Animals that are judgeded as if it doesn't have delicate emotion. Especially about the Plants, maybe that's because people can't find even motion, it is reguarded as the thing has no feeling. I could start my works of plant from a reservation about all these judgements. ● Weaving wire like knitting and get it transformed, I hope to express my works that have feeling and motion as if they are moving and living creatures as animal. Likewise, I'd like to talk to them again that I judged impatiently and didn't do my best to understand before. ■ LEEWONKYOUNG
