올해로 27회째를 맞이하는『서울미술대전』은『한글TRANS: 영감과 소통의 예술』이라는 제목으로 한글을 소재로 서예, 디자인, 순수미술 등을 총망라한 예술영역에서 지속적으로 활발한 활동을 선보이는 동시대 작가들을 한자리에 모았다. 다양한 어법을 구사하는 작가들의 '한글'을 바라보는 특유의 관점을 담은 한글작품들을 선보임으로써 오늘날 한글의 현대적인 변용(變用)양상을 살펴보고자 한다. ● 한글시대에 접어든 뒤, 지필묵의 서예에서 현대 디지털 시대로의 변화에 이르기까지 한글의 조형성이 어떻게 전개되어 왔는가를 살펴보기 위하여 매체의 구분없이 세 개의 섹션으로 전시를 구성했다. 첫째는 한글 고유의 조형성을 살려 작품으로 승화시킨『문자에서 예술로』, 둘째로는 한글을 창작의 소재로 활용한『영감으로서의 한글』이다. 그리고 마지막으로 한글의 원리와 창제정신을 조형적으로 풀어낸『소통하는 한글』이다. 이로써 소리∙꼴∙뜻 글자인 한글의 우수성이 현대 사회의 변화된 환경에 어떻게 수용되고 있는가를 보여준다. ● 1층『문자에서 예술로』의 섹션에서는 한글의 기본요소인 하늘, 땅, 사람을 골자로 한 한글의 아름다움을 서예가와 그래픽디자이너 고유의 조형어법을 통하여 만나 볼 수 있다. 나아가 한글의 문자적 아름다움과 조합의 원리를 근원적으로 탐구하고 실험적으로 접근하는 2층『영감으로서의 한글』은 서예가와 디자이너, 그리고 무용가의 조화로움을 느끼도록 한다. 본 섹션에서는 새로운 시대 환경에 따른 한글의 TRANS 양상을 신체, 의상과 시의 조합으로 예술적 승화를 시도한다. 마지막으로 '소리=이미지'라는 한글의 특성을 유쾌하게 풀어낸『소통하는 한글』이다. 한글의 조형성과 과학적인 원리가 결합된 한글의 조형미를 작품을 통해 체험할 수 있는 공간이다. ● 다양한 분야의 작가들 간의 교감으로 이루어지는 본 전시는 한글의 아름다운 변주를 경험하고 한글에 대한 다각적인 이해의 장을 마련할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다. 따라서 한글의 우수한 미감이 과거, 현재의 시점에서 어떻게 해석되고 있는지를 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 내일의 한글 예술의 창의적 지평을 제시해 볼 수 있는 전시가 될 것으로 기대한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

Marking its 27th anniversary, the Seoul Art Exhibition presents『Korean alphabet: the art of inspiration and interaction』. The contemporary artists included in this collection have been highly active in numerous fields of art including calligraphy, design, and fine art etc. This exhibition explores the changing aspects of contemporary Hangeul through the work of artists with unique work styles and perspectives. ● Regardless of the medium, this exhibition is comprised of three sections each looking at the development of Hangeul since its inception, from the age of paper and pen to the digital age. The first section『Hangeul as Art』exhibits work transformed from the unique shape of Hangeul. The second section『Hangeul as Inspiration』introduces Hangeul as a raw material of creation. The last section『Hangeul as Interaction』presents art inspired by the principle of Hangeul and its invention. As a whole, the work demonstrates the ways in which modern times might accommodate Hangeul – as a sound, as a form, and as a meaning. ● The first section『Hangeul as Art』on the first floor outlines the beauty of Hangeul based on its raw materials – the sky, the earth, the humans - through the unique work of the calligrapher and the graphic designer. On the second floor, the second section『Hangeul as Inspiration』examines the beauty of Hangeul as characters and its structural formation through investigation and an experimental approach; this allows us to witness the harmony between the calligrapher, graphic designer, and dancer. As a result, by combining body, costume, and poetry, the second section transforms the various figures of Hangeul in its present age into an art. The last section『Hangeul as Interaction』foregrounds the personality of Hangeul as sound equaling image and allows the opportunity to witness the beauty of this alphabet due to its aesthetics and scientific principles. ● The exhibition is made through the interaction of artists with diverse backgrounds; it enables us to experience the beautiful variations and to broaden our understanding of Hangeul. We hope this exhibition highlights the aesthetic sense of Hangeul's past and present, and also provides creative direction for the future of Korean art. ■ Seoul Museum of Art
