라이트 아트(Light Art) - 일상속에 깃든 빛의 향연 ● 1. 빛은 그 자체로 인류에게 큰 축복이었다. 더욱이 예술가에게 빛은 좋은 작품 소재이자 재료로서 세계창조에 기여해왔다. 빛이 주는 유형무형의 세계는 단순히 우리 주변에 존재하는 과학기술 가운데 하나라는 사실을 뛰어넘는다. 빛은 인류에게 다양한 정신사적 각성을 제공해주기 주기 때문이다. 태초에 빛이 있으라고 한 기록은 물론, 플라톤이 말하는 동굴의 비유도 마찬가지이다. 구원의 상징, 혹은 철학적 깨달음도 모두 빛과 연관이 있다. 우리가 잘 알고 있는 렘브란트나 인상파화가들에게도 빛이 평생의 연구 대상이 되었다. 이후 빛에 대한 연구는 빠른 속도로 치닫는데, 20세기 초반부터는 전기를 이용하여 보다 적극적인 작품이 선보이기 시작한다. 그 결과, 빛에 대한 해석은 종교적, 철학적, 혹은 회화적 해석태도에서부터 광원, 곧 직접적으로 빛을 발생시키는 물체나 도구에 조형적 가치를 입히기 시작했다. 심지어 빛을 받아서 반사하는 물체나 빛과 그림자의 관계, 또는 여러 가지 방법으로 응용된 방식도 여기에 적극 동참한다. 1960년대 이후부터는 우리가 잘 알고 있는 백남준을 비롯한 수많은 예술가들이 능숙한 기술력을 바탕으로 빛을 다루기 시작했다. 최근의 미술가들을 검토해보자면, 지금이 빛의 세기라 할 수 있을 만큼 다양한 형태의 작품들이 소개되고 있다. ● 이 전시회는 첨단 기술력이 지배해가는 우리 사회에서 빛의 문제를 조형 예술가들이 어떻게 해석하고 있는가를 다룬다. 이렇게 함으로써 흔하다는 이유로 제대로 보지 못했던 빛에 대한 우리 인식의 폭을 확장시키고자 하였다. 빛은 우리에게 무한한 사유를 제공해준다. 경이로움이나 숙연함 혹은 가능성과 역동성을 느끼게 한다. 언어의 한계가 곧 세계의 한계라고 한 것처럼, 빛의 한계가 곧 세계의 한계라고 해도 지나치지 않다. 흑암이 깊은 곳에서 우리 인류가 할 수 있는 일이란 거의 없기 때문이다. 빛이 주는 숭고함, 장엄함이나 사물을 성장시켜주는 매개체로서의 기능은 자연에 생명력을 불어넣어주고 인간에게는 영적인 힘을 더해주고 있다. 그러나 무엇보다 빛은 그 자체로 아름답기 때문에 많은 예술가들의 관심을 받아왔을 테다. 이 전시는 만져볼 수 없는 물질을 통해 현대미술이 줄 수 있는 다양한 경험을 이야기할 수 있는 장이 될 것이다.

2. 총 15명의 작가가 참여한『빛나는 미술관』은 한국미술가들이 어떠한 태도로 빛을 해석하는가를 다룬다. 참여 작가들이 보여주는 빛의 파노라마는 최근 예술가들의 관심이 어디에 있는지 보여주는 사례가 되겠다. 빛을 이용한 현대 미술가들이 지속적으로 등장하고 있는 바, 이는 빛이 주는 시각적, 심리적, 조형적 매력이 크기 때문일 것이다. ● 그 가운데, 김성수는 물질문명과 소비문화가 담고 있는 현상과 그 이면의 모습을 다룬다. 여기에는 도시의 네온 아이콘들과 현대 건축이 담고 있는 모던한 양식들을 이미지화한다. 그의 도시는 그 속에서 살아가는 현대인의 모습 그 자체다. 소비, 밤의 문화, 인공적인 오브제. 그 화려하고 비대해져 가는 도시의 모습에 대비되는 현대인의 모습에서 결핍을 느낀다. 순수 붓 작업을 통한 빛의 세계를 보여준다는 점에서 관객은 그의 작품 앞으로 한걸음 더 다가서게 된다. 박제성의 놀이기구 영상콜라주 「The Structure 0f」시리즈는 현대사회가 주는 자극에 대한 고찰이다. 놀이기구를 서로 조합하여 만든 외형은 그로테스크한 생물체 같은 느낌마저 감돌게 한다. 야간에 빛을 발하면서 끊임없이 회전할 것만 같은 그 기계장치. 거기로부터 작가는 현대인이 스스로 만든 공허를 발견한다. 나아가 일시적인 아름다움과 괜한 불안감이 뒤섞여있는 형태로 다가선다. 발광하는 빛의 움직임 속에서 관조자는 현대를 살아가는 우리들의 모습을 발견한다.

백남준의「비디오 샹들리에」는 소형 TV모니터 여러 대와 담쟁이덩굴을 샹들리에 형태로 구성해 천장에 설치한 것으로, 낯설고 기이한 느낌이 드는 작품이다. 위로부터 아래로 내려오는 이 작품은 그 아래에 선 관람객에게 감상행위에서 더욱 확장된 '시청'이라는 행위의 새로운 경험을 제공한다. 부지현은 독특하게도 바다어선에서 물고기를 유도하기 위한 집어등을 이용한 설치작업을 선보인다. 집어등은 삶의 흔적이 배어있는 오브제이며 그에 따라 일상과 삶의 메타포를 보여주는 명상적이고 관조적인 느낌을 준다. 집어등의 빛은 고유의 장소성에서 이탈하여 새로운 문맥으로 작동한다. 대단히 정적이고 고즈넉한 느낌을 가지고 있는 그의 작업은 예술과 삶의 경계란 바로 이 지점이라는 느낌을 자아낸다.

신정필_존재적 무한에 대한 실험 / 신정필_존재적 무한에 대한 실험_드로잉

신성환의「빛으로 세상을 그리다」는 관객의 참여를 통해서 완성되는 작품이다. 관객들이 휴대용 LED로 허공에 원하는 이미지를 그리면, 이것이 컴퓨터의 데이터로 저장되어 실시간으로 전시장 모니터를 통해 슬라이드 쇼로 보이게 된다. 또한 완성된 결과물들은 다시 관객 각자의 이메일주소로 보내지도록 하여 작품과 관람자 간의 소통 가능성을 넓히도록 하였다. 신정필은 광섬유를 사용하여 대상의 본질 속으로, 사물과 사고를 이어주게 만드는 작품을 보여주고 있다. 빛을 연결하는 섬유의 선과 섬유 끝에서 발산되는 빛의 관계를 고려하여 제작한다. 빛에서 느껴지는 독특하고 모호한 분위기는 또 다른 차원의 세계를 만나게 되는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 또한 서로 다른 차원의 경계에서 바라보는 사물에 대한 인식을 드러내 보이고 있다. 윤애영은 검은색 알루미늄 판 위에 버튼과 LED, 스위치를 이용해 만든 설치작품을 전시한다. 감상자가 버튼을 직접 누름으로써 자신이 직접 새로운 세계를 경험하게 하는 작업이다. 설치된 작품은 있는 그대로 감상할 수도 있지만 관람객의 의지에 따라 작품이 달라 질 수도 있다. 어떤 버튼을 누르느냐에 따라 상상할 수 없는 새로운 세계가 생성된다.

이상진의「Light Bloom」은 마치 마법에 걸린 정원처럼 신비로워 보인다. 전기가 통하면 빛을 내는 소재인 EL(Electro-Luminescence)을 이용하여 빛의 정원을 표현했다. EL은 주로 전기 전자제품에서 사용되고 있는 얇은 필름 형태이다. 빛과 그림자에 대해 남다른 연구를 보여주고 있는 이용덕은 이번 설치작업에서 보다 적극적으로 관객과 교감한다. 빛을 비추면 감상자의 모습이 그림자처럼 벽에 기록되고 일정 시간 동안 그 그림자는 없어지지 않는다. 감상자는 자신의 몸이 빠져나온 상태에서도 정지되어 있는 자신의 그림자를 바라본다. 이를 통해 작가는 우리의 모습을 되돌아보는 관조적 시간을 제공한다. ● 어두운 전시공간 안에서 화려하게 깜박이는 희망의 텍스트들이 있다. '꿈'을 모티브로 삼은 이준우의 작품 앞에 선 관객들은 현대의 삶 속에서 변질되거나 완전히 사라져버린 꿈들을 그린다. 과연 그 꿈이 존재나 했던 것이었을까 하는 현대인들의 삶의 문제를 다루지만 작가는 관객들에게 그 부재를 통하여 도리어 잊었던 꿈을 다시금 추구하게 만든다.

이진준은 일상에서 자연스럽게 체험하고 있는 도시의 빛과 세계를 보여주고 있다.「Insomnia」는 개별적 체험을 빛 작업으로 승화시킨 경우라 하겠다. 작가의 불면증은 실내에서 블라인드를 드리우게 했고, 나부끼는 블라인드를 바라보면서 느꼈던 상념을 작가는 본 작품에서 다루고 있다. 창문 사이로 비치는 빛과 그것을 가리려는 블라인드. 거기에서 발생하는 메타포를 서정적으로 드러내고 있다. 장유정은 작업실이 위치한 곳의 자연과 작가의 사유가 결합된 사진작업을 했다. 울타리 파란 장막에 빛이 비치면 뒤에 있는 포도밭이 그 사이로 보인다. 작가는 이 점에 착안하여 사진설치작업을 전시한다. 작가는 반투명한 필름에 사진을 인화한 후에 뒤쪽에 조명을 비추어 푸른 장막에 포도밭이 비쳐 보이는 효과를 연출한다. 자연과 인공물이 한 공간에서 오버랩 되도록 하여 잔잔한 빛의 여운을 느끼게 만든다. 정정주는 빛과 공간에 관심이 많은 작가다. 그의 작품 속 공간들은 그가 현재 생활하고 있거나 한 번쯤은 들어가 본 공간들을 모델로 만든 것이다. 작가는 책상이나 책장, 옷장등과 같은 가구들로 가득 찬 공간보다 비어있는 공간에서 더욱 많은 흥미를 느낀다. 전시현장에 설치한 건축물 모형은 실재공간을 본떠 만들었다.

장유정_잠재력 / 장유정_A Window

최수환은 검정색 아크릴 판에 다양한 크기의 구멍을 뚫어서 이미지를 만들어 보이고 있다. 관객들은 그 구멍에서 새어나오는 빛을 통해 이미지를 보게 된다. 작가는 관람객들에게 화려한 이미지와 빛이 만들어내는 환영(Illusion)을 경험하게 하는데, 뚫려진 공간과 액자사이에서 발생하는 시각적 요소를 다루고 있다. 홍승혜는 동어반복을 통한 창작을 보여준다. '반복'은 오리기 붙이기, 회전시키기 등과 같이 컴퓨터 그래픽 기능에서 조형어법을 찾아낸 홍승혜 작업의 특징이기도 하다.「비상구」는 늘 평면으로 벽에 붙어있는 비상구 사인을 입체에 반복해서 본래의 의미를 혼란시키는 심리적인 오브제이고,「RGB」는 빛의 삼원색을 투명 유리창에 3색 시트지 작업으로 보여주면서 그 위에 다시 글자를 반복하여 전시장 입구에서 빛의 존재를 일깨우는 역할을 하도록 고안된 작업이다. 미적인 기능과 일상의 기능을 대비시키고 혼용하는 것 역시 홍승혜 작업의 특징 중 하나이다.

3. 인류는 고대부터 빛을 통해 광학적 원리를 연구해 온 바, 이 전시는 이러한 연구를 토대로 작업을 해오고 있는 현대 미술가들의 시도들을 보여주게 된다. 말하자면 현대사회에서 목격할 수 있는 다양한 빛과 관련된 현상을 드러내고 있다고 보면 되겠다. 자연의 빛에서 가공의 빛으로, 기존의 빛의 개념에서 보다 새로운 빛의 개념으로의 이행. 이 전시에서는 참여작가들의 개별적 세계에 대한 독창적인 해석을 만나게 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 마치 하나의 동심원을 그리듯이 빛의 경계가 만들어진다. 빛이 바로 주제이자 소재가 되기 때문이다. ● 관객입장에서 볼 때도 빛이라는 소재는 대단히 흡인력 있는 대상임을 알 수 있게 될 것이다. 수동적인 입장이 아니라 적극적으로 빛과 교감하는 작품, 바라만 보아도 마음을 움직이게 하는 작품, 현대를 살아가면서 잠시 잊고 있었던 소중한 우리 일상을 되돌아보게 하는 작품들이 있다. 나아가 그 빛을 통해 자아와 외부 간의 관계를 규명해보는 계기도 될 테다. 빛이 너무 과도하게 많아 우리가 그것을 인식하지 못하였다면 이번 전시는 빛을 새롭게 바라볼 수 있는 시간이 될 수 있을 것이다. ■ 한가람미술관

Light Art - A Feast of Light Embedded in Everyday Life ● 1. Light was truly a blessing to mankind in itself. Especially, light has greatly contributed to the creation of the world while playing a significant role as a good material and a subject matter for artists. The tangible and intangible world given by the light is beyond the fact that it is just one of the scientific technologies around us. The reason is because the light provides mankind with a variety of spiritual awakenings. Both a symbol of salvation and philosophical enlightenment are deeply associated with light. To even Rembrandt or impressionists, the light became a subject of inquiry for their entire lives. Since then, the study on light proceeded rapidly and a more aggressive artworks using electricity began to appear from the early 20th century. As a result, interpretation of light has turned from religious, philosophical, or pictorial analysis of attitudes into objects or toolswhich emit light byattachingformative value to them. Even relationship between object, light, and shadow caused by reflections from the light, and also applied method with a variety of ways are actively applicable to here. Since 1960s, numerous artists who are well known to us including Nam June Baik started to deal with the light based on their skillful techniques. To review recent artists, surprisingly, a variety of artworks are being introduced as to say that now is the century of light. ● This exhibition illustrates how visual artists represents an issue of light in our society controlled by cutting-edgetechnology, thereby broadening our perception of light that we have never known before just because of its common use. Light providesus with unlimited cognition. It makes us feel wonders, solemnity, or possibilities and a sense of dynamism. As if saying a limit of language is a limit of the world, it is not too much to say that the limit of light isthe limit of the world. There is very little we can do in complete darkness. Sublimity and solemnity of light and its function as a medium which grows things brings vitality to nature and spiritual power to human. However, it must have received a lot of attention from artists because light is beautiful in itself. This exhibition would become a significant venue where the audience can tell a variety of experiences which can be offered by contemporary art through intangible substance. ● 2. Light in Today's Artwith a total of 15 participating artists deals with how Korean artists interpret the light with their attitudes. Panorama of light by the participating artists plays as an important role in showing what the recent artists' interests are. The reason why contemporary artists who use light are continually appearing today is probably because of its visual, psychological, and formative attraction that the light possesses. ● Above all, Sung Soo Kim deals with phenomenon, which material civilization and consumption culture contain, and further their inside facts. Here, modern styles and patterns contained in neon lamp icons and modern architecture become image-based visualized. The city Kim created is the contemporary people living itself. Kim pursues deficiencies from an image of contemporary men compared with the image of city which has become bloated with consumption, night culture, artificial objects, and splendors. Audience comes to step forward to his artwork in that Kim presents his light world through pure brush work. Amusement park series by Je Baak is consideration about stimulus provided by the modern society. Outer appearance created from a combination of rides even gives us a feeling ofgrotesque organism. From the mechanical device which seems to consistently rotate while offering glow in the dark, Baak discovers a sense of emptiness that contemporary people create themselves. Furthermore, he approaches us with a mixed form of temporary beauty and a sense of insecurity. Thus, we can find our appearance living in the today'ssociety through the luminous movement. ● Nam June Paik's Video Chandelier is an installation work hanged on ceiling grouped with several small monitors because this work is tangled with cables and monitors and the light shining between the cables, the entire appearance assumes a glamorous and beautiful chandelier shape. Installed from the ceiling to the bottom, this work provides the audience who stands in the below with a new experience, a means of 'watching' action, extended from 'appreciating' action. Ji Hyun Boo's work presents installation with the use of fish lamps as a fish tool for luring and trapping fish in a fishing boat. The fish lamp is an object containing human life and accordingly, it provides a sense of meditative and contemplative feeling which illustratesan everyday life and the metaphor of life. The light of fish lamps drops out of its original space and instead functions within a new context. Boo's work with tranquil and gentle feeling creates a sentiment that the border between life and art is on this very spot. ● Sung Hawn Shin's Drawing with Light is completed through participation of audience. Once the audience draws any images in the air using portable LED, it is simultaneously saved in a computer's data and thus presented on the monitor in real time. Also, completed outcomes are sent to the audience's email address, thereby broadening the aspect of communication with the audience. Jung Phil Shin's work connects between objects and concept into the essence of objects using optical fiber. He works on an idea considering the fiber line which connects the light as well as the relation of light emanated from the end of fiber. Its unique and ambiguous atmosphere from the light arouses a feeling as if we were meeting a different dimension of the world. Also, this work reveals the cognition of objects looked from a border of another dimensions. Ai Young Yun exhibits installation work with the use of buttons, LEDs, and switches on the black aluminum plate. The work allows the audience to push the buttons directly and then to experience anew world. Onecan just appreciate the work as it is, and also can change the work as they wish. According to which button the audience presses, unimaginable world would be created. ● Sang Jin Lee's Light Bloomlooks mysterious like an enchanted garden. He expresses a garden of light using EL (Electro-Luminescence) material which emitslight when charged with electricity. EL material is a form of thin film widely used in electronic products. In Lee's another work, Copy Light recaptures and depicts the light coming through the shape of a window by measure. Here, Lee illustrates the 'copied light of window' like the title of the work by actually measuring the amount of light and adjusts the total brightness in proportion to the inflow of light. Yong Deok Lee, who depictsa profound study on the relationship between shadow and light, interacts with the audience through his installation work. If the light is flashed on the audience, one's appearance is recorded and its shadow does not disappear for a period of time; the audience can see his/her shadow remaining still even after getting out of the original position. Through this work Lee gives us aretrospective time to look back upon us. There are hopeful texts blinking glamorously in the dark exhibition space. The audience standing in front of Jun Woo Lee's artwork imagines a variety of dreams which are already degenerated or vanished in one's modern life. Although Lee deals with the issue of lives of contemporary people who wonder if their dreams have ever existed, he makes them pursue their dreams again through its absence. ● Jin Joon Lee presents the light of city and world that we meet naturally in our daily lives. Insomnia can be an example of elevating his personal experience into a work of light. His work comes from his insomnia that makes him draw blinds, and from his thoughts and feeling while watching the swaying blinds. The work lyrically reveals a metaphor which arises from the light coming through the window and its blinds to shield the light. Yu Jung Chang's work contains a photograph in combination with nature which is close to Chang's art studio and her thoughts. If light shines onto a fence, a vineyard behind the fence comes into sight. Based on this scene, Chang exhibits a photographic installation work. Chang depicts an effect which the vineyard is reflected in a blue curtain by printing out the photograph on a semi translucent film and then by shining the light by overlapping the nature and artificial objects in the same space, the work arouses gentle aura of light. Jeong Ju Jeong is an artist who is very interested in light and space. The spaces in Jeong's artwork are derived from Jeong's real living spaces or some spaces Jeong might have been visited at least once. Jeong feels more interested in an empty space rather than in a space filledwith furniture such as desk, bookshelves, wardrobe, and so on. Model structure created in an exhibition site mimics an actual space. A camera set up inside the model structure records the audiencemoving in the exhibition space, comparing different views from the inside camera and the audience. ● Soo Whan Choi's work illustrates an image by making various sizes of holes on a black plexi-glass plate. This work contains a strong sense of visual effects by allowing the audience to see the image through the light coming from the holes. As Choi deals with visual elements arising from between the open holes and a frame, the audience can experience splendid images and illusion made by light. Seung Hye Hong, who is famous for repetitivecomputer pixel work, shows her creative work through repetition of words. The 'Repetition' is referred to as her work's special feature which she has found formative language from computer graphics such as cutting, pasting, and rotating. Exit is a means of psychological object which confuses its original meaning by repeating the exit sign on a three dimension, which is actually a flat board. And RGB serves as a reminder to the audience about the existence of light at the entrance of exhibition by illustrating three primary color sheets on a translucent glass board and then repeating the words again over it.Contrasting and combining the aesthetic function and daily function are also the one of Hong's characteristics. ● 3. As mankind has been studying the principle of optics through light, this exhibition shows the attempts by contemporary artists working based on this research. It is to say that a variety of phenomena related with light which can be seen in the modern society are revealed - a transition from natural light to artificial light as well as from an existing concept to a new concept of light. In this exhibition, we are able to meet the participating artists' creative interpretation about the individual world. Nevertheless, the border of the light is created as if drawing one concentric circle. The reason is because the light becomes the theme as well as the medium. ● Even from the audience perspective, the subject matter as the light mustbe a very attractive. There are some artworks which interact with the light actively, move our heart, and make us look back upon our precious lives. Furthermore, this exhibition would be a great opportunity to clarify the relationship between ourselves and the external world through its light. If we haven't been able to aware of the light due to too much light, this exhibition would be a good time to realize and see the light with fresh eyes. ■ Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center
