오늘날 명품을 찾는 이유는 다양하다. 어떤 이들은 이러한 명품으로 치장하여 자신을 다른 사람들에게서 차별화 시키기 위한 도구로 쓰기도 하고, 어떤 이들은 분수에 맞지 않지만 명품에 대한 환상으로 무리하게 구입하기도한다. 그들에게는 그 명품의 기능보다 그 제품이 상징하는 자신의 능력과 권위에 더 관심이 있다. 또한 어떤 이들은 똑똑한 마케팅과 전략에 의한 부질없는 고가의 상품이라 보기도 한다. 그렇다면 여러분은 어떠한가? 이러한 현상을 잘못되었다고 볼 수 있을까? 우리는 똑똑한 마케팅의 피해자들 인가? 우리는 그들을 평가 할 자격이 있는가? 작가는 스카프 위에 끊임없이 병렬된 명품들의 이름들 사이사이에 명품구매의 이유들을 숨겨놓아 이 명품들의 뜻하는 진정한 의미를 스스로에게 묻고 있다. ■ 박신영

Definitions of luxury designer goods vary. One can argue that they are excellent and outstanding pieces of work, products that are rare, and sometimes have high artistic value. Some people want to differentiate themselves from others by 'flaunting' their wealth because 'they can'. Some are driven by 'fantasy' about the luxury items, which are sometimes beyond their means. They buy luxurious items because they want to mimic the rich and 'live their dreams'. These people are less concerned about the functionality of the product, but care more for the perceived "power" or "authority" one gets from the possession of, and showing off, the product. The rest can argue that they are overpriced goods and products of smart marketing. Is this wrong? Are we the victims of smart advertising? Who are we to judge? I produced this print to ask myself what these luxury designer goods mean to me. ■ ShinYoung Park

Shin-young Park is a Korean-born New Zealander and printmaker. Since she moved to Auckland in 1991 with her family, she completed Bachelor degree (1998) and Master degree (2003) in Fine Arts at the prestigious Elam School of Fine Art at the University of Auckland. Park has won the "Iris Fisher Art Award (Best Contemporary)" in 2005 in Auckland and nominated as a "most Outstanding Emerging Artist" in Art Singapore 2009. Her works were commissioned by Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Singapore (2008) and Fullerton Bay Hotel, Singapore (2010). She is also a member of Singapore Printmaking Society and a president of KAP (Korean Art Professionals in Singapore). Currently she is participating in the Asia Pacific Artists Fellowship Residency Program run by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea. ■
