제5회 갤러리나우 작가상 ● 갤러리나우에서 매년 시행하고 있는 『갤러리나우 사진가 공모전』 수상전은 작가 포트폴리오 공모를 통하여 세계 사진계를 이끌어갈 사진가를 발굴하고 창작활동을 지원하고자 작품제작에서부터 도록제작 등 전시 진행의 모든 것을 지원하는 프로그램입니다. 한국 사진계의 발전에 이바지하고 해외 작가들을 국내에 소개하는 동시에 해외 유수 갤러리와의 교류 및 국제 아트 페어 참여 등을 통해 작가정신을 고취하고, 널리 알리고자 제정 되었습니다. 2012년 제5회 『갤러리나우 작가상』은 사진평론가이자 중앙대학교 교수인 이경률교수님께서 맡아 주셨고 수상자는 호주작가 캐서린 넬슨이 선정되었습니다.

캐서린 넬슨(Catherine Nelson)전 『Other Worlds』 ● 캐서린 넬슨(Catherine Nelson, 1970년생)의 작업은 원모양으로 완성 된다. 동그라미는 선사시대 이래 수많은 문화와 역사를 거치면서 우주, 진리, 완전함, 원만함, 순환, 깨달음을 암시하거나 자연의 근원을 상징하며 종교의 초월적 개념을 내포하고 있다. 자연에서 채집 된 넬슨의 작품은 때로는 확대 재생산을 하기도하고 때로는 축소 재생산 하는 과정을 거쳐 원모양의 전환된 조형적인 이미지로 완성하고 있다. 그래서 그녀는 완벽한 지구, 미래의 온전한 세계를 꿈꾸고 있는 듯하다. 현대라는 삶 속에서 원시의 것이나 진리, 그리고 영속성이 불투명한 우리들의 삶을 다시 들여다보게 하는 공간으로 환기되고 있는 것이다.

넬슨의 '다뉴브시리즈'를 처음 보았을 때 단번에 나의 눈길을 사로잡았고 머릿속의 상상력 폴더가 열리면서 나는 이미 새로운 여행을 시작했다. 눈 안에 들어오는 넬슨의 수많은 이미지들과 함께 어느새 꿈을 꾸기 시작했다. 그러고는 자세히 들여다보면 볼수록 신뢰와 믿음이 내 마음 깊이 자리하고 있다는 사실이 느껴졌다. 호주의 야생성과 드넓은 공간에 대한 성장기의 체험은 넬슨 자신에게 솔직한 작품을 만들어야 한다는 생각을 하게 했다. 그리하여 세계문명의 기원인 지역들을 채집하고 그 자연에 대한 새로운 해석으로 다시 창조된 이미지는 그녀만의 새로운 풍경을 만들어낸다. 이는 우리들이 살고 있는 자연환경, 더 나아가서 우주와 지구, 자연에 대한 보다 진지한 자세를 견지한 결과물인 것이다. 지구, 우주, 호수, 원시, 에코, 새, 산불, 모네의 정원, 꽃, 낯과 밤, 여름과 겨울, 산과 바다 그리고 원시의 숲과 깊은 강은 그녀의 보이지 않는 목소리, 신비스러운 노래, 시와 같은 영상으로 다시 태어난다.

캐서린넬슨은 사진과 회화를 규정하는 경계선을 무너뜨리는 작업에 관심을 갖고 있다. 전통적인 사진에 오랜 경험과 훈련에 의한 탄탄한 디지털 테크놀로지가 결합되고, 거기에 시적인 그녀의 감성 표현이 어우러져 초현실적 풍경화를 완성한다. 즉 물감 대신 카메라로 그리는 그림인 셈이다. 촬영된 사실적 이미지는 컴퓨터 안에서 하나의 작품으로 완성되는 데는 한 달에서 두 달 이상의 시간이 소요된다. 그리하여 호주평론가 '헤더 제이콥스'에 의해 "신화적 현대 회화"라 명명되어지고, 그녀는 자신의 작품을 "테크놀러지로 그린 그림 " "카메라로 표현하는 화가" 즉 "진화된 풍경화" 라고 말한다.

호주 출신의 캐서린 넬슨은 호주 NSW college에서 회화를 전공하고, 『물랑루즈』,『해리포터와 아즈카반의 죄수』,『300』,『오스트레일리아』 등의 영화 제작에 참여했던 작가이다. 영화 작업을 통해 영상테크닉의 기본을 탄탄히 다진 작가는 2008년부터 시작하여 2010년 발표한 첫 시리즈인 「Creation」으로 호주에서 가장 큰 기업예술상인 RBS클라이언트 토이스상을 받으면서 주목을 받았다. 이를 시작으로 「Source」,「Future Memories」,「Nuit Americaine」,「Other world」과 「Danube」 등의 연작을 통해 호주, 유럽, 중국 등에서 촬영한 수 만 개의 자연의 디테일 이미지들을 조합하여 완성도 높은 결과물을 보여주고 있다. 특히 루마니아의 흑해를 향해 흘러가는 다뉴브강 삼각주를 여행하며 채취한 수천장의 이미지들로 구성된 「다뉴브시리즈」 또한 시각적인 강한 흡인력과 일루전적 흥미를 유발시키고 있다.

하루의 변화되는 섬세한 빛의 변화 그리고 밤과 낯의 두 가지 감성이 한 작품에 녹아 있는 그녀의 놀랍고 새로운 시각적 해석으로 만들어진 영상은 새로운 진실에 다가서게 하는 힘을 지니고 있다. 이미 호주는 물론 파리와 중국에서 호평을 받은 바 있고 현재 벨기에에 거주하면서 작업하고 있는 넬슨은 유럽에서 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다. 그녀만이 갖는 서정적이며 노스텔지어적 새로운 세계로 안내하는 작가의 상상력은 오늘을 사는 우리들에게 또 다른 세계 「Other Worlds」를 상상하게 하는 즐거움을 맛보게 한다. ■ 이순심

The 5th Now Gallery Artist Award ● The annual Gallery Now photography competition Award is a competition presenting one artist with support to develop their portfolio as well as exhibit in the gallery. The program is designed to support photographers all across the globe and introduce them to the rest of the world. This Award seeks to introduce Korean and International photographers and contribute to the development of photography, as well establishing relationships with other galleries and artists overseas. The 5th Annual Gallery Artist Award Competition of 2012 was moderated by Art Criticism Professor Kyoung-Ruel Lee of Jungang University. This year's award goes to Australian photographer Catherine Nelson. ● Catherine Nelson-Other Worlds Catherine Nelson's work revolves around circle. Throughout history in many cultures the circle has symbolized perfection, truth, and completeness. It also alludes to enlightenment and the origin of nature, a concept that transcends into various religions. Nelson's collected imagery of nature is sometimes enlarged or minimized when it is repeatedly reproduced used in. Through this repetitive process the circle must be transformed for every composition in order for the image to be completed. Thus, she is imagining the perfect earth; a future utopia, the origin within modern life, the truth, and the re-examination of our perpetual transparent existence in an artificial space. ● When first viewing Nelson's 'Danube Series' one glance made me froze and opened my mind to new perspectives. Numerous images from Nelson's work flooded my mind and my consciousness fell into the artwork. The more I looked and carefully re-examined the images, I felt and recognized a faith and trust deep within me. Nelson's personal experience growing up in the vast Australian outback has led her to produce artwork in this direct, straightforward manner. Her work creates a new interpretation of global civilization, genesis, and nature through her imagined landscapes, as well as re-examining our natural environment, the earth and the universe, and highlighting the more serious issue of the future of our world. The artist's poeticism is reflected in the earth, the universe, lakes, raw, echo, new, wildfires, Monet's garden, flowers, day and night, summer and winter, the mountains and the sea and the primeval forests and deep rivers in her images. ● Nelson is especially interested in breaking down the rules and boundaries that define photography and painting. Her many years of experience with traditional photography combined with digital photography, harmonizes to create emotionally poetic and surreal landscapes. She uses her camera and computer instead of a paintbrush, her hyper-realistic images taking one to two months in order to complete. Hence, she was dubbed the "mythic modern painter' by Australian Art critic Heather Jacobs. The artist herself refers to herself an "artists expressing through a camera" and calls her work " images painted with technology" and "evolved landscapes." The Australian native and graduate of the University of New South Wales majored in painting, and had previously worked on the film production of Moulin Rouge! (2001), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and 300 (2006). ● Borrowing the basic imaging techniques after working with film, this well-rounded photographer's introduced works from 2008-2010, led her to win the prestigious Royal Bank of Scotland Emerging Artist Client Choice Award. This lead to her following series' "Future Memories", "Nuit Amercaine", "Other world", and "Danube," The various landscapes of Australia, Europe, China, and many others are combined into digital imagery that transcends the original landscapes. The Romanian Black Sea merging into the Danube delta in particular were composed of thousands of photographs taken during trips to those locations, these images potent with a complete days worth of photographs are what makes the images interesting. The subtle changes in light and tone as day fades to night drips with emotion, her incredibly new visual interpretation of imagery has the power to reveal hidden truths. The artist already receives high acclaim in Paris, China, and Australia currently resides in Belgium where she is receiving incredible popularity as well. Her taste in lyricism guides those of us living in this world into her imagination of many other worlds, like her appropriately named series, 'Other Worlds." ■ LEESOONSHIM
