Threshold

두산갤러리 뉴욕에서는 10월 11일부터 11월 3일까지 이지현의 개인전『Threshold』를 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 신작 페인팅과 초기 드로잉 작품들이 선보일 예정이다.

이지현은 직접적인 경험과 간접적인 경험에서 나오는 기억과 공간을 소재로 하여 공공 장소들과 사적인 장소들을 뒤섞는 방식으로 가상의 풍경화를 만들어 왔다. 공간을 이어주는 사이, 틈새, 서로 다른 어떤 것들이 만나게 되는 지점 등을 의미하는 단어인 'Threshold'는 이번 전시 제목이자 새로운 페인팅 시리즈의 제목이다. 이지현의 작품에서는 인간의 경험이나 기억 속에 존재하지만 눈에 보이지 않는 공간에 대한 탐구를 의미한다.

'보이지 않는 공간'은 작가의 경험이 무의식 속의 기억이나 꿈과 연결되어 이미지로 표출 되는데, 이 무의식의 흔적은 그의 작품이 공간과 기억이라는 접점을 두고 과거와 현재를 넘나들며 형상화된 이미지로 나타나 실제보다 더 매력적인 공간으로 탈바꿈되어 보여진다. 이렇게 이미지의 재조합과 새로운 배치를 통해 끊임없이 시간과 공간의 한계를 극복하려는 시도는 평면적인 회화의 한계를 극복하고자 하는 확장된 의미로 해석 된다. 주로 대형작품을 전시 해왔던 이지현은 이번에 처음으로 그간에 작업한 '작은 화면의 페인팅'들과 초기 작품인 '종이 드로잉'들을 함께 전시한다. 거의 10년 전 그려진 드로잉 작품들과 최근작들의 소재가 서로 연결되어 있어 마치 작은 퍼즐처럼 느껴지기도 하는데 시공간을 뛰어넘는 이 기억의 동선들은 현재 작업까지의 중요한 모티프로 작용하며 현대회화의 다양한 측면을 보여준다. ■ 두산갤러리

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Threshold, a solo exhibition of Jihyun Lee, from October 11 to November 3, 2012. The exhibition occupies her major paintings and premieres her early works. Lee is known for her large-scale paintings which involve rearranging and juxtaposing of places present in her daily life with famous landmarks. Her continual exploration of indefinite narratives manifests synthetic memories between the places to another and they approach the viewer unexpectedly. In this exhibition, Threshold, which is an architectural term that refers to a doorway or a doorsill, her work expresses the synthetic recollection and phenomenon that occur within the unconscious mind. By converging disparate places into one picture plane, Lee reveals the fact that our consciousness is composed of numerous layers that have neither the beginning nor the end. Throughout her works, she constantly stretches the notion of contemporary painting and attempts to go one step further by spanning the gap between what is seen and what registers in our memory. ■ DOOSAN Gallery
