writing of life[contemplation]

그간 나의 작업들은 표면적으로 다양한 방식으로의 도시표현이 주를 이뤄왔다. 수묵에 기초한 담백한 선묘로 구성된 도시에서부터 짙은 농묵으로 일변된 무거운 도시풍경, 그리고 화려한 채색으로 채워진 도시야경까지. 이는 단순히 재현적인 의미의 도시이미지가 아닌 도시 속을 살아가는 나의 모습, 혹은 우리들의 모습 속에 감춰진 다양한 욕망들에 대한 관조적인 시선의 결과물들이었다. ● 인간에게 욕망은 드러나기 보다는 감춰진 경우가 많다고 나는 생각한다. 열길 물속은 알아도 한길 사람 속은 모른다는 속담처럼 우리는 스스로의 욕망이 가시화되는 것을 달가워하지 않는다. 하지만 이렇듯 잘 드러나지 않는 욕망도 직접적으로 가시화 되는 경우가 있다. 그것은 욕망과 물질이 결합했을 때 비로소 구체화 되곤 하는데 내게 도시는 그런 경우의 한 가지 예로 받아들여진다. 인간의 기본적인 의식주의 범주를 넘어선 물질과 욕망을 소비하는 공간으로서의 도시는 다양한 스펙트럼을 보여주게 되는데 아찔하게 뻗어 오른 수많은 도심의 빌딩과 빼곡히 들어선 건물들, 그리고 도로 위를 가득채운 수많은 자동차들만 보더라도 인간의 욕망의 산물들을 직, 간접적으로 충분히 경험할 수 있다.

이렇듯 끊임없이 인간의 필요와 선택에 의해 진화되어온 도시이지만 정작 그 속에서 살아가는 우리의 모습은 어떠한가? 역설적이지만 안락하고 행복하기 보다는 무겁고 쓸쓸하기 그지없는 나를 경험하는 것은 그리 어려운 일이 아닐 것이다. 우리가 기대했던 삶의 가치는 이상으로만 존재할 뿐, 물질과 욕망의 달콤함에 눈이 멀어 진정한 삶의 가치를 찾으려는 노력은 간과해버렸는지도 모를 일이다. ● 단순히 욕망의 부정적인 측면을 이야기 하자는 것이 아니다. 욕망의 부정적인 측면 역시 인간이기에 가질 수밖에 없는 필요악인 것처럼 우리의 삶을 돌아보고, 우리의 주변을 돌아보며 충분한 고민과 경험을 통해 얻어지는 긍정적인 욕망들 역시 살펴보자는 것이다. 그리하여 단순히 물질과 욕망의 노예로 살아가기보다는 삶의 주체로서 가치 있는 삶을 살아보자는 것이다. ● 복잡다단한 우리네 삶 속에서 스스로에 대한 진지한 고민과 반성 없이는 행복한 삶을 꿈꿀 수는 없을 것이다. ● 가치 있는 삶. 그것은 우리 스스로의 몫이다. Until now, my work was mostly on various ways of expressing on city expression, from outside. ● From the city drawn in clean lines of ink and wash paintings, to completely altered dark inked heavy cityscapes and to fancy coloured city nightscapes. ● This was not simply reproduction of city images but was the result of the contemplative view of various desires hidden in my own or in our images living in the city. ● I do think in many cases that the human desires are rather hidden than exposed. ● Just like a saying 'You can sound water ten fathoms deep, but you cannot sound the human heart a single fathom', we are not pleased with our own desires being revealed. However there are cases where desires are being directly revealed although it is usually concealed. Usually it becomes actualized when desire meets materials. And to me, the city can be one of the examples. It is a space where spending of desires going over basic necessities of life of human, showing various spectrum of the city. You can fully experience the fruit of human desires directly and indirectly only just looking at so many high city buildings and packed buildings and road filled with cars. ● So as the city has been endlessly evolved following man's needs and choices but look at our images living in the city? ● Paradoxically speaking, it is not too difficult to experience heavy and lonely self rather than happy living in comfort. Our expected value of life only exists in idealism. It might have ignored efforts to search for the real value of life blinded by sweetness of desires and materials. ● It is not the intention to simply to talk about the negatives of desires. Just like the negatives of desires also is a necessary evil in human, we should look back on our life and our surroundings and examine positive desires gained from plenty considerations and experiences. ● In our complicated life, it will be impossible to wish for a satisfied life without serious considerations and self-reflections on one self. ● A Valuable Life .
