나는 아름다운 것을 추구하기 위해 그림을 그린다. 어렸을 때부터 만화를 좋아하고 잘 그리고 해서 가족들이 내가 미술에 재능이 있다고 늘 칭찬하였다. 그래서 미술을 더 좋아하게 되었다. 그리고 그림에 많은 다양함을 표현하고 싶다. 아직 젊어서 미술적 표현기법이나 기술은 부족하지만 유치하게 느껴지더라도 표현 할 수 있는 모든 것을 써서 사물들의 구조를 표현하고 싶다. 그림을 그리기 전에 스케치를 하는 이유는 기본적인 구도를 갖기 위해서다. 그런 다음 스케치를 보면서 색연필로 미리 색깔을 정하기도 하고 스케치처럼 똑같이 그릴 경우는 그 구도가 정말 마음에 들어서이고 똑같지 않을 경우는 다시 한번 생각을 한다.

그래서 스케치는 나에겐 중요하다. 스케치 다음으로 색깔도 나에겐 표현하고 싶은 의미인데 색깔을 강하게 쓰고 싶고 빨리빨리 쓰고 싶다. 그래서 튜브를 짜서 그대로 쓴다. 그러다 보면 색깔이름을 튜브를 보면서 알 수 있어서 좋다. 또 외우고 싶은 색깔이 많아서 튜브를 자꾸 보면 외워지기 쉽다. 삶에서 겪는 경험을 뒤로 한 채 그냥 주변에 있는 사물이나 정물들이 나로 하여금 많은 생각을 하게 만든다. 그리고 그것들을 내 마음에서 정리하고 또 다른 미의 측면들을 꺼내면 더 많은 생각을 한다.

내가 인물을 그리기를 좋아하는 것은 물론 자화상도 그리기를 즐긴다. 정물들도 다른 작가들의 still life 시리즈 같은 것을 보면서 동경하고 좋아한다. 이런 두 가지 요소가 있는 집안이나 집안에 있는 정물들을 많이 그린다. 내가 정말 좋아하는 것은 만화다. 하나하나 스토리나 그림이 나를 재미있게 한다. 문학도 좋아한다. 글의 문화적인 배경이 사람을 즐겁게 해준다. 인상파 화가들의 그림을 좋아하는데 빛이 투명성이 보이기 때문이다. 조각들이 가지고 있는 생동감 또한 나의 미적인 요구 중에 하나이다. ■ 강민석

I paint and draw to pursuit beauty. As long as I remember, I love cartoons and started drawing them. All my family loved and praised what I did and that made me like art more and more. I want to express all forms of art. Even though there is long way to go, I want to draw and paint as many styles and structures as possible. The reason I sketch is to obtain a basic structure. And then I decide which color to use looking at my sketch. With the basic structure in my sketch, I both go on and finish my painting or I think over and repaint. That's why sketching is very important to me. First of all, I like to use strong, raw colors and to finish my job quickly. Plus I get to know the name of the color through the tubes and eventually memories them. What comes through my mind are the things that surround me, especially non-moving things. Then I classify them and try to bring out the other aesthetic sides and go over again through my mind. I want to leave behind the experiences. I have in life at the present moment. Basically, I like to sketch and paint people including myself. I also adore still life pictures aspired by series of famous still life paintings. That's why I paint at home because it provides these two factors. I just love cartoons and animation. The harmony between each story line and the visuals satisfies my artistic curiosity. Reading classic literature also gives me pleasure because of its cultural and historical background. The transparency of light through impressionist artists and the vitality of sculptures are my other factors that fulfill my artistic needs. ■ KANGMINSEOK
