Collective Moment

이연숙 작가는 사적인 기억을 수집하고, 이를 조합하여 새로운 내러티브를 공간 안에 구성하기 위한 방법으로 비닐봉지를 이용한다. 마켓에서 흔히 물건을 담기위해 쓰이는 다양한 색상의 일회용 비닐봉지는 작가의 작업 내에서 그 기능을 상실하고, 조형적인 작품으로 재탄생된다. ● 조각을 전공한 작가가 철을 용접하고 레진을 캐스팅하는 작업 대신에 비닐봉지를 적극적인 미디엄으로 사용하게 된 이유에는 영국에서 체류한 유학기간의 경험이 무엇보다 중요하다. 타국에서 거주지를 옮겨 다녀야 하는 생활이 이어지고 학교와 숙소를 오고가는 이동시간이 길어지면서, 작가는 이동이 손쉽고 작은 공간에서도 제작이 가능한 재료를 찾게 되었다. 그리하여 2008년부터 시작한「Re-use me」시리즈와 2011년「Mother and her mother」시리즈 등은 일상의 물건으로써 익숙한 비닐봉지를 재료로 사용하여 각각 오브제와 공간으로 제작된 대표적인 작업들이다. 쇼핑 후 모아 놓은 비닐봉지를 가늘게 잘라서 매듭을 지어 만든 샹들리에나, 비닐봉지를 하나하나 이어 붙여 만든 작은 집은 관람자에게 시각적인 즐거움과 안식처를 제공한다. 더 나아가, 일회적 소모품인 비닐봉지를 노동집약적인 과정을 통하여 예술품이라는 새로운 가치로 변환시킴으로써, 자본주의 사회에서 '생산-구매-소모-생산'의 순환과정에서 사물의 가치를 다시금 환기시킨다.

이전의 작업이 재료의 특성을 강조한 단편적 이미지에 머물렀다면, 금호영아티스트 전시『콜렉티브 모먼트』는 사물과 작가의 기억 속 사건들이 한 공간 안에서 유기적인 관계를 이루며 구성된다. 단편적인 기억이 모아져서 하나의 서사가 만들어지고 그러한 기억이 재구성되어 순환되는 과정을 빗대어 표현하기 위하여 '재생 펠렛(Pellet)'이 공간바닥에 설치된다. 작가에 따르면, 석유에서 추출된 펠렛으로 만들어진 비닐봉지가 수거되어 알갱이 형태의 재생 펠렛이 되고, 다시 비닐봉지로 재활용되는 리사이클링의 환원 과정이 마치 기억의 순환과도 비슷하다. ● 전시 전경은 작가가 의도한 바, 하나의 풍경 또는 무대처럼 구성된다. 가장 큰 공간을 점유한 노란색 비닐은 열가공을 하여 개별적인 비닐봉지를 이어 붙인 것으로, 축적된 시간에 의해 우리의 기억 속에 드리워진 막처럼 추억의 아련함과 사실적인 이야기로 바뀌는 지점의 모호함을 상징한다. 비닐봉지로 만들어진 오브제들이 다시 바닥에 설치된 재생원료(Pellet)로 돌아가는 순환의 문을 상징한다고 할 수 있다. 중간에 매달린 설치물들은 한 시대를 풍미했던 부귀영화, 권력 등을 상징하는 샹들리에 형태를 차용한 것으로서 원래의 사실들이 주관적 해석을 통해서 퇴색되는 순간적인 가치를 말하고자 한다. ■ 금호미술관

Yeon Lee uses plastic bags as to collect private memories then combines them to compose new narratives in a certain space. Colourful plastic bags that are commonly used to carry various items in supermarkets lose their original functions and are recreated into a formative objet in Lee's work ● The reason why Lee, who has studied sculpture, has decided to use plastic bags as active medium, instead of welded metal and casted resin, can be found in her life and experience while she studied in the UK. Since she often moved houses and travelling to and from the school took longer, Lee had to find materials that could be carried readily and used in limited space. Hence 'Re-use me' objet series from 2008 and 'Mother and her mother' installation series in 2011 are the major works that were produced from plastic bags, which are familiar in everyday life. ● The chandelier of crocheted flowers made from used plastic bags from supermarket chains and the small house that is built from joining plastic bags one by one, offers comfort and pleasure in seeing to the viewers. Furthermore, plastic bags being transformed into artwork through the labour intensive process recalls the values of goods within the cycle of 'production-purchase-consumption-production' in capitalistic system. ● While previous works showed episodic image that emphasized the characteristics of materials, the exhibition 'Collective Moment' for the Kumho Young Artist consists of an organic relationships involving objects and the pieces of memories that the artist has, within a space. ● Episodic memories assemble to make a narration and such memories are reconstructed in a cyclic sequence. In order to depict such process, 'recycle pellet' is installed on the floor. ● According to the artist, the cyclic sequence where pellets are extracted from oil to produce plastic bags and those bags are collected to reproduce granular recycle pellet then they are again reproduced into plastic bags, is similar to the cycle of memory. ● Installation overview illustrates a certain panorama or a stage, as the artist intended. Fused yellow plastic bags make 'Yellow flower' named 'Mom's flower garden' that fills up the largest proportion of the space. This represents the vagueness at the point where the reminiscence that is fainted by a veil-like accumulation of passed time turns into realistic stories. This also signifies a door of cycle in which the objet of plastic bags are changed back to pellets that are installed on the floor. The installations that hang in the middle are in the shape of chandeliers, which once have symbolized prosperity and wealth. They aim to tell the temporal values that are faded when the truth undergoes subjective interpretation. ■ Kumho Museum of Art
