City Cage

현대 도시인들이 가지고 있는 '탈출'에 대한 아이러니는 가장 보편적인 일상 탈출 행위인 '여행'에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 떠나고자 마음을 잡고 어디로 떠날까 고민할 때와는 반대로 많은 사람들은 지금의 이곳과 비슷한 또 다른 거대 도시로의 여행을 선택한다. 새로운 곳에 대한 이질적인 감정을 갈망하면서도 현실의 안락함을 버릴 수 없어하며 현실과 맞닿아 있는 비슷한 공간으로 탈출을 결정하는 것이다. ● 여행자들은 빽빽한 빌딩이나 고층 아파트가 둘러진 현실의 도시 새장(City Cage)문을 열고 탈출함과 동시에 또 다른 새장으로 진입한다. 재미있는 것은 이들이 현실에서의 자기 자신들의 모습과 비슷한 일상을 살고 있는 현지인들을 관찰하고 동물원의 동물 보듯 구경한다는 것이다. 구경을 마친 여행자들은 자신의 현실로 돌아와서 열심히 살아가고 또 그런 그들을 다른 새장의 여행자가 와서 구경할 것이다. 이런 돌고 도는 서로에 대한 재미있는 시선이 도시 새장(City Cage)안에서 공존한다. ■ 김지영

The irony of "escape", for which all urbanites yearn, can be found in travel, the most common way to escape from one's everyday mundane life. Many urbanites choose another huge city as their destination, one much like their own city, although they dream of a journey which allows them to escape to an exotic wonderland. They desire to experience the latent emotions that could be unleashed by a new place; however, they decide to escape to a more realistic and similar city due to the comfort of the familiar. ● Travelling offers escape from one's "city cage", a desolate prison cell that is surrounded by dense buildings and high-rise apartments, but ironically most travellers just enter another city cage as their chosen destination. They curiously watch the local people, who live lives similar to their own, and observe them like animals in a zoo. After their short sightseeing excursion, the travellers will return back to the real world where they can also be viewed as animals in the zoo to the delight of other travelers. ■ KIMJIYOUNG
