Couple : 커플

켄트겐스와 코크마이어는 남북한 국경 지대에서 만나기로 했다. "커플"이라는 작품을 위해, 그들은 한국에서 유일하게 남북한 양쪽으로부터 접근이 가능한 곳인 유엔 회의실에서의 동시 만나는 계획을 세웠다. 켄트겐스는 북한에서 코크마이어는 남한으로부터 접근한다. 남북한으로부터의 동시 입장은 허용되지 않기 때문에 켄트겐스와 코크마이어는 서로 간의 의사소통을 위해 작은 쪽지를 남긴다.

국경에서 이 둘의 만남은 두 나라 간에 실질적인 연결점을 만들려는 시도로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 면을 강조하기 위해, 이들은 유엔 회의실과 같은 푸른색의 셔츠와 드레스를 맞추었다. 켄트겐스와 코크마이어는 오직 이 특별한 날에만 단 한 번 이 옷을 입었다. ● 각각의 이동 경로, 즉 판문점과 유엔 회의실에의 입장 장면을 비디오카메라로 기록했다. 양쪽에서 찍은 두 비디오는 마치 서로의 거울상과도 같다. 이들은 두 나라로 대변되는, 서로 다른 버전의 역사와 현재를 보여주는 것이다. 이 비디오들은 경기창작센터의 주전시실에 설치된 작품에서 동시 상영되었다. ● 한국에 도착하기도 전에 이미 켄트마이어와 코크마이어는 이 분단국가 특히 비무장지대에 매료되어 있었다. 그 명칭의 뜻과는 달리 남북한 사이의 비무장지대는 세계에서 가장 중무장된 곳이다. 판문점은 비무장지대 안에 위치한 곳으로 남북한과 유엔의 공동 관할이다. 유엔의 주 회의실은 남북한의 경계선 상, 즉 남북한에 반반씩 걸쳐 있는 파란 건물이다. 이 건물은 두 나라간의 협상을 위해 지어진 것으로, 남북한이 서로 만나는 유일한 장소이다. ■ 경기창작센터

커플 켄트겐스 & 코크마이어 (Kentgens & Kokmeijer Couple)_설치_2012

Kentgens & Kokmeijer decided to meet each other at the border of North and South Korea. For 'Couple' they arranged a simultaneous meeting at the UN main conference room, the only place in Korea that is accessible from both sides. Kentgens entered from North Korea and Kokmeijer from South Korea. Since it is not allowed to access this room from the North and the South at the same time, Kentgens & Kokmeijer left small notes for each other to communicate. ● Their meeting at the border can be considered as an attempt to create a physical connection between the two countries. To emphasize this gesture they commissioned a tailor to produce two pieces of unique clothes, a dress and a shirt, in the same blue color as the UN main conference room. Both Kentgens & Kokmeijer wore these clothes for only one day, the day of their meeting. It is impossible to travel freely around North Korea, nor is it possible to visit the DMZ from the South without UN escort. Kentgens & Kokmeijer were therefore dependent on tours and tour operators to stage their encounter. Because of strict regulations in both countries they had no opportunity to communicate before or during their meeting. ● They documented their approaches themselves through videos that show them entering Panmunjom and the UN main conference room. Two videos from both sides, that show a mirrored image of their meeting. En passant they register the different versions of history and the current situation, presented by the two countries. These videos will be shown simultaneously in a video installation at the GCC main exhibition hall. ● Even before they arrived in Korea, Kentgens & Kokmeijer were fascinated by this divided nation, especially the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Despite of its name, the DMZ between North and South Korea is the most heavily militarized border in the world. Panmunjom is a patch of land located inside the DMZ and is controlled by the two countries in cooperation with the United Nations. The UN main conference room is a blue building that lies right on the border, half on the North and half on the South Korean side. It is built for negotiations between the two nations and it's the only place in Korea where North and South can meet. ■ GYEONGGI CREATION CENTER
