Body Complex

몸: 이원성으로 결합된 실체 ● 나는 '몸(Body)'을 주제로 삼아 인간의 실존적 상황을 표현한 이른바 인체풍경(bodyscape)을 탐구해 왔다. 인체 드로잉, 일상의 사물, 자연물 등으로부터 모아진 다양한 '몸'의 이미지를 결합하고 재해석하여 화면에 구성한 "Body Complex", "Duality" 연작이 있다. 남성과 여성, 두 가지 성으로 대별되는 인간의 몸은 내 그림에서 재현적 혹은 비유적, 상징적으로 나타난다. 그림에서 '남성'과 '여성'은 이원성(Duality)을 상징하는 대표성을 띤다. Sex와 Gender로서의 남녀의 개념일 뿐 아니라, 정신과 물질, 빛과 어두움, 선과 악, 음과 양 등 대립 항을 이루어 인식되고 존재하는 것들의 의미를 더불어 내포한다. 즉 남성과 여성은 이원성(Duality)의 양극을 대변하며 나는 이러한 이원적 상호관계의 상징적 표현에 집중한다. 본질적으로 서로 대립하지만 필연적으로 갈망하고 갈등하며 공존할 수밖에 없는 존재하는 모든 것들의 관계와 작용을 회화의 상징적 도상으로 표현하고자 한다.

그림에 등장하는 지퍼, 고리 등 개폐(開閉)의 기능을 하는 사물, 그리고 마치 자웅동체와 같이 한 몸 안에 존재하는 남녀의 성징(性徵)은 남녀관계의 이원성과 결속을 의미한다. 남녀란 안과 밖이 하나로 연결된 '뫼비우스 띠'와 같다. 본성적으로 다른 가운데 서로가 불가분의 관계로 맺어져있는 것이 그들의 운명이다. 그들은 사랑과 미움, 욕망과 좌절, 신뢰와 배반을 생산한다. 실상 인간의 역사와 희로애락의 중심에 '에로스'가 있다. '자신이 불완전자임을 자각하고 완전을 향하여 끊임없이 노력하여 나아가려는 인간의 정신', '충동적 생명력'이라는 뜻으로 플라톤에 의해 철학적 개념으로 쓰이기 시작한 그리스어가 '에로스(eros)'다. 어쩌면 신은 인간 스스로 그들의 한계를 깨닫도록 인간을 남성과 여성으로 창조했을는지 모른다. 유한한 인간은 남녀의 생식(生殖)으로 영원을 꿈꾼다. 보다 인간적인 인간들의 모습은 그대로 치열하고 아름답다.

재료기법은 혀나 성기 등 인간의 신체가운데 가장 예민하게 피부를 노출하고 있는 부분을 묘사하는데 있어 동양화의 전통적 초상화 채색기법을 응용하였다. 서양화에서 피부색 표현에 흰색을 혼합하는 것과 달리 동양의 초상화기법에서는 흰색을 섞지 않고 다양한 순색 및 보색을 여러 겹으로 채색하여 깊고 투명하고 다채로운 피부묘사의 사실성을 도모한다. 상징적 도상 안의 사실적 피부표현을 위해 이 채색기법을 그림에 사용하였으며 공기와 수분의 투과와 흡수를 허용하도록 제작된 한지의 성질이 사람의 숨 쉬는 피부와 유사하다는 점도 한지에 이 채색기법을 활용한 이유이기도 하다.

더불어 나는 페티시(fetish)적 요소, 즉 인격체가 아닌 물건이나 신체특정부위에서 성적 판타지나 만족감을 얻으려는 경향을 인간의 자연스럽고 창의적인 시지각적 반응으로 해석하고 발전시키고자 한다. 어떤 사물이나 형상을 보고 떠올리게 되는 형태 심리적 반응의 가장 근거가 되는 것이 바로 몸(body)이라고 생각한다. '몸'이 만들어내는 실루엣과 표정은 어떠한 시각적 대상보다 인간의 상상력과 본능을 자극하여 생(生)의 긴장과 에너지를 만들어내기 때문이다. 유구한 자연의 진화와 변모 가운데 인간의 몸은 처음부터 완성된 디자인을 가졌다. 그러기에 '몸'은 아름다움과 추함, 삶과 죽음이 무한히 재생산되는 연속성을 지향한다. 모두에게 동등한 실존의 터전이며 외부세계와 만나는 첫 번째 지점인 몸은 언제나 열려있다. 그러기에 회화의 전통적이고 고전적인 소재로서의 '몸'이 오늘 날, 현재 그리고 미래에도 늘 새로운 의미와 형식을 담을 수 있는 유효한 키워드임을 믿는다. ■ 전수경

The Human Body in My Painting: A Combined Duality ● The human body is my main artistic subject. It has been stimulating me to create art works since I got trained in profession. A body is accepted as a volume in common. I have been trying to realize a pictorial interpretation transforming the body into a landscape. I found more existential human condition in the body as a landscape than as a volume. I call it "bodyscape". When I see a body, I see a bodyscape. My attempt to create the bodyscape has accomplished in 3 series since 2002 and is being made a series: The 6th day(2002), Soliloquy(2005), Body Complex(2007), and Duality(in progress now). ● The human figures in my painting are expressed as two contrary sexual characteristics that male and female are represented with symbolized figurative. The comparison implies a Duality: male vs. female. The duality implied with the bodies in painting covers all of things as perceptible beings like spirit vs. matter, light vs. darkness, good vs. evil, etc. Male and female are extremely contrasted each other, meanwhile both of them concentrate on the complementary relation. With the symbolic grammar of art, I am researching the relations among all of things that desire and coexist one another even if they are opposing and conflicting one another. My artistic creation is aimed at the expression of the order of the dualism. ● In my recent works, the image of some devices to open and close such as zippers and hooks and the image of some hermaphrodites such as two different sexes in the same figure, both of them imply that the relationship between male and female has a combined duality. In a piece of version, I represented Mobius strip to reply the duality combined some different aspects in the same unity. These works reveal the destiny of the man-woman relationship to get indivisibly united of opposing natures. I expect that my pictorial dialectic of the combining dualism gives some chance of a self-awareness to the spectators in front of my paintings. My expectation is caused by the God's plan to create the human being to separate as man and woman. I think he intends the human to know themselves of their limits. ● My major technical method is depend on the expression of transparent, clear skin to look vivid. To represent the keen surfaces on body parts, I use the traditional coloring that oriental portrait painter adopts. Oriental traditional portrait painter uses various pure color to layer a lot on his canvas without any control depending on white color as like western painter. So I can get a vivid quality of the surface and the unique nature of han-ji(Korean traditional paper) that has a similar human skin properties. ■ CHUNSOOKYUNG
