장르는 넘나드는 새로운 예술 세계 ● 현대미술에서는 순수예술과 상업미술인 디자인 사이의 경계가 점차 사라지고 있다. 디자인은 이미 작품화 됐다. 예술도 실생활 속으로 파고들었다. 상품과 작품의 경계로 모호해졌다. 디자인과 예술의 영역은 이미 그 경계가 무너지고 있다. 디자인과 미술은 아름다움을 추구한다는 점에서 동일한 속성을 지녔다.

갤러리로얄은 8월 16일부터 9월 22일 까지 '실용예술'과 '순수예술'을 경계를 넘나들며 전방위적인 작업을 선보이고 있는 오브제 아티스트 다니엘 랜달의 개인전을 개최한다. 작가는 자연의 근원적인 힘에 매력을 느껴 눈에 보이지 않는 자연의 힘으로 세상의 형태를 느끼고 작업으로 풀어낸다. 실재 모든 물질을 구성하는 원자의 흐름은 불변의 것이 없음을 의미하므로 자연의 모든 것도 흐름이 있고 또한 움직인다. 랜달이 작업에 접근하는 방식도 이러한 개념과 함께 한다. 금속이란 단단하고 견고해서 어떤 자극에 저항할 것이라 여기지만 자연의 흐름으로 접근한다면 재료의 물성을 이용하여 유연하게 조작될 수 있는 것이다.

Forms of Observation ● A statement of my artistic activitiesshould be described in two parts. First, observation of my surroundings has always been myprimary source of creative inspiration. Objects and processes in the natural and manmade world provide a constant source of visual information. The act of seeing is essential, being able to notice visual information that can emerge in any place at any time. Pieces of visual information are collected and internalized subconsciously. Over time lines, forms and textures become elements which emerge through drawing and sketching. Multiple ideas and series of work develop simultaneously, influencing each other in a fluid process of concept development. ● The second aspect of my creative work is the long fascination with study of metalsmithing. The understandingof material and history of technique are a constant source of investigation. We understand metal to be rigid, hard andresistant to deformation. Through the study of metalsmithing we come tounderstand the ways in which metal can be manipulated in a plastic state, taking on any form imaginable. It has been a long term goal to become fluent in the working processes related to metal of all kinds. ● This process allows freedom to observe, utilize and execute both concept and material. As concepts develop theapplication of effective design and competent execution becomes fluid. The result is a body of work which varies in material, technique and concept but originates from the same creative process. ■ Daniel K. Randall
