What Is To Be Done?

본 전시는 난지미술창작스튜디오 국제 교류 프로그램의 일환으로 현재 입주해 있는 국외단기입주작가의 전시입니다. 현재 난지미술창작스튜디오는 2개의 스튜디오를 국외작가들을 위해 운영하고 있으며 매해 입주신청과 심사를 거쳐 입주작가를 선발합니다. 입주기간이 끝나는 시기에 입주기간 중의 성과를 전시를 통해 보여주는 성과보고전을 개최하며 이번 전시에서는 지난 5월부터 8월까지 프로그램에 참여하는 지니 유의 작품을 전시합니다. 그녀는 입주기간동안 그녀의 공간과 매체에 대한 탐구를 계속하였으며 그 결과물들을 난지갤러리에 설치합니다. 지니 유는 한국에서 출생, 캐나다로의 이민 이후 콩코르디아 대학에서 순수미술을, 요크 대학에서 회화 석사학위를 취득하였으며 캐나다의 오타와와 이탈리아 베니스를 중심으로 활동하고 있습니다. ■ 난지미술창작스튜디오

자신의 작품에서 지니 유는 회화의 관습을 면밀히 조사하는 동시에 그 매체에 내재한 새로운 가능성을 탐구하려고 한다. 추상회화와 오브제의 영역을 오가는 작가의 작품은 회화적 공간을 넘어서는 회화의 측면을 추구한다. 즉 작가는 이미지 이상의 것을 묘사하고자 노력하며 실행으로서의 회화가 갖는 제스처라는 측면을 신중히 드러내려는 것이다. 작가는 종종 알루미늄 위에 유화 물감으로 그리는데, 알루미늄의 반 반사 표면이 회화적 공간을 이룬다. 이러한 재료의 선택은 작가의 예술적 실행이나 개념적 숙고에 필수적인 요소다. 알루미늄의 회화적 공간은 물질적인 사실, 다시 말해 아직 그려지지 않은 표면이 이미 존재하는 상태이며 이렇게 선재하는 회화적인 표면 위에 그림으로써 지니 유의 작품은 회화가 종종 끝나곤 하는 지점에서 새로이 시작하는 것이다.

지니 유는 캐나다 오타와와 이탈리아 베니스에 본거지를 두고 활동하고 있는 한국계 캐네디언 아티스트다. 오타와 대학교에서 회화를 가르치는 교수이기도 한 그녀는 뉴욕, 브루클린, 런던, 베니스, 오타와 등 각지에서 폭넓은 전시회를 치렀던 경험을 가지고 있다. 그녀는 온타리오 아트 재단으로부터 2012년 Laura Ciruls Painting Award를 수상한 바 있고 Pulse Prize New York 2011의 최종 후보자이기도 했다. 캐나다 예술 진흥위원회(Canada Council for the Arts) 및 퀘벡 예술 문학 진흥위원회 (le Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec) 에서 창작 지원금을 수여 받기도 했다. 그녀는 현재 몬트리올에 있는 Galerie Art Mur 과 토론토에 있는 General Hardware Contemporary 에 소속되어 활동중이다.

In her work, Jinny Yu attempts simultaneously to scrutinize conventions of painting and to explore new possibilities within the medium. Oscillating between the fields of the abstract painting and the object, her work seeks out aspects of painting beyond the pictorial space: she strives to depict that which is beyond the image and deliberately reveals the gestural aspect of painting as praxis. She frequently paints with oil on aluminum, whose semi-reflective surface comprises a pictorial space. This choice of materials is integral to her artistic practice and conceptual musings; the pictorial space of the aluminum is a material fact, a pre-existing condition of the as yet unpainted surface, and by painting on such a surface, one that is already pictorial, Yu's work begins where painting often ends. ● Born in Korea and based in Canada and Italy, Jinny Yu has shown widely, including exhibitions at the ISCP Gallery (Brooklyn), Pulse New York (NY), Scope New York (NY), Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation (Venice), the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (Kyoto), the Conduit Street Gallery, Sotheby's (London, UK), Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa), the Taehwa Eco Art Festival (Ulsan City, Republic of Korea), the Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown), and McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton). Yu, who is Associate Professor of Painting at the University of Ottawa, was awarded Laura Ciruls Painting Award from Ontario Arts Foundation in 2012 and was a finalist for the Pulse Prize New York 2011. She has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and le Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec.
