타인의 얼굴 속에서 발견하는 자화상 - 心象에 대한 思索 그리고 自己愛 ● 이신애 작가는 인물화에 전념하는 화가다. 자화상도 많이 그리는 화가이기도 하다. 그런데 인물화와 자화상은 일맥상통하는 그 무언가가 숨겨져 있다. 미술사에 가장 많이 자화상을 그린 렘브란트의 경우 100여점의 그림 속에서 한 점 허식이라고는 찾아 볼 수 없는 자신의 파란만장한 생애를 담담하게 보여주곤 했다. 자화상이 자기 성찰의 기록이라는 의미를 갖고 있는 탓인지 인물화 역시 자신의 모습을 그 안에서 발견한다고나 할까? 그래서 이화백은 인물화를 무수히 그리기도 하지만 자신의 모습이 곧 대상 인물이기도 한 그러다보니 매우 까다로운 화가로 꼽힌다.

인물의 표정과 몸짓 - 내면세계 ● 화가의 붓은 정에 끌리는 모양이다. 그것도 인물을 통해서 자신의 모습을 바라보기도 한다. 인물화 작업은 그 사람 본연의 얼굴이면서도 가장 자연스러운 부분을 찾아내는 것이 중요하다. 더불어 모델이 되어준 사람과의 교감도 매우 중요하다. 인류가 조형 행위를 시작한 이래 인간을 표현하는 작업은 지금까지 계속되었고, 앞으로도 끊임없이 이루어질 것이다. 이러한 의미에서 인물화는 역사적 기록이자 자화상이라 할 수 있다. 신앙·생활·사상·문화 등 각 시대의 관심사가 인물화를 통해서 표현되는 것이다. 그런데 여기에 화가 이신애는 자신이 느끼고 있는 인생에 대한 사색과 자화상을 더 한 작품을 그려내고 있다. 그녀는 그림만을 '소통'의 도구로 여긴다. 물론 눈빛을 통해서 모든 것을 말 할 수 있기도 하지만 얼굴을 통해 작은 세상을 보고 자기를 표현 할 수 있었다. 인생의 가장 찬란했던 화양연화(花樣年華)의 순간이나 슬픔, 고독, 회의 등 말로 형용 할 수 없는 자신의 내면을 인물의 얼굴과 표정 몸짓을 통해 표현 할 수 있어 좋았다. 그러다보니 마음이 끌리는 상대에게 붓이 갔다. 눈빛 하나만 갖고도 인간의 희로애락을 담아 낼 수 있는 인물화의 매력은 그녀의 마음을 치유해 주고도 남았다.

눈에 보이는 것이 다는 아니다 ● 그의 주제는 '심상'(心象)즉 이미지이다. 과거에 지각했던 기억의 표상에서부터 자신에 대해 끌리는 마음까지 사물의 생김새 보다는 마음의 생김새를 더 중요하게 생각한다. 그는 늘 예술이 고독의 소산이라고 생각한다. 그것은 예술창조의 동기가 차분히 가라앉는 마음으로 인생의 섬세한 구석까지를 통찰하고 관찰한 것을 표현하는 능력, '심상'이라는 주제가 탄생한 계기다. 이작가 자신이 내성적이고 주관적이며 사색적인 성격을 가졌고 인생 자체를 긍정도 부정도 아닌 회의적인, 언제나 불확실한 그 무엇을 찾아가는 과정으로 여긴다. 궁극적으로는 눈에 보이지 않지만 결국 마음으로만 읽을 수 밖에 없는 그 기억들을 인간의 표정과 눈빛 속에서 발견해 내고 있는 것이다. 그러다보니 인물화를 그리다가도 결국은 자화상을 그리는 것 같은 착각에 빠져들데도 많다고 한다. 작품의 면면이 그녀와 닮은 듯한 작품이 많다. 비록 인생이 회의적이라고 느끼면서도 끔찍한 자기애의 표현, 마치 문인 전혜린이 삶에 대해 버거워 하면서도 죽음의 순간까지 "이 끔찍한 생이여 다시 한번!"을 외쳐야 했던 그 고뇌가 느껴진다. 그래서인지 자화상을 그리거나 아주 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 평범한 인물들을 그림속에서 만날 수 있는 것이 그 특징이다.

애틋함, 그리움, 갈망 ● 그는 애틋함, 그리움, 갈망 같은 감정들을 화폭에 자주 담아낸다. 물론 자화상을 통해서 그려내기 보다는 자신의 내면적인 감정들을 타인의 모습 속에서 찾아내기 위해 애쓴다. 눈빛과 표정, 몸짓 하나하나를 통해 보는 이로 하여금 자신의 내면을 보여준다. 초상조각 또는 인물화는 미술적 배경이나 그 실재 인물 뿐 아니라 그의 주변 인물들과 항상 연관되어 있다. 예를 들면 그려진(만들어진)이유, 친분관계, 사건 등 풀어놓을 이야기가 아주 많게 되는 것이다. 인물화는 한 마디로 사람들에 관한 흥미진진한 이야기다. 그 속에는 비정한 음모, 분노, 사랑, 기쁨 등 인간의 역사가 숨 가쁘게 펼쳐진다. 다만 그 내면을 표정으로 들키게 되고 그림으로 인간의 얼굴이 읽혀지는 것 뿐이다. 작가는 오늘도 자신의 희로애락을 담아 낼 인물들을 찾아 나서는 예술적 여정을 계속해 나가고 있는 중이다. ■ 이훈구
