Born in 1975 in Chongqing, China, Lijun graduated with MFA from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2002. Lijun "cartoon like" images are easily recognizable, painted in fluorescent shades of pink, yellow, green and blue, creating a visual bombardment in which figures dance, sing or strike a pose. Seeking inspiration in fashion magazines, MTV, cartoons and commercial advertising, Lijun finds unlimited sources to fuel her imagination and creativity. She incorporates the objects and images she finds into her works, seeking to document moments that are between illusion and reality. In a way Lijun is creating a new form of Chinese Pop Art. A relatively new artistic language replacing the tightly politically controlled visual language applied during her parents' generation and expressing the 21st Century voice of China's urban youth. Xiong Lijun is currently living and working in Chongqing and is giving art lectures in the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. ■ Opera Gallery
