성

가제로 써왔던 '성'을 정식제목으로 정했다. 더 좋은 제목이 생각나지 않은 탓도 있지만 긴 제작시간 동안 편의상 불러왔던 제목이 이젠 익숙해져 버린 탓이기도 하다. 내가 이 곳을 처음 발견한 것은 작년 3월 초순경이었다. 딱히 발견이라고 하기에도 뭐한 것이 강변북로 대로변에 떡 하니 자리잡고 있었던 것을 그곳을 자주 지날 일 없었던 내가 그제서야 보게 된 것이기에, 그냥 개인적인 첫 대면이라고 해야 더 맞는 표현이겠다. 하지만 돌이켜보면 내 작업의 거의 모든 대상들은 '이미 거기에 있어왔던' 것들이어서 오직 나에게만 특별한 '발견'이라고 명명될 수 있는 것들이었다. 마치 이 비일상의 공간이 일상 곳곳에 숨겨져서 나와의 대면을 기다리고 있는 듯, 우연히 불쑥 마주치게 된다. 그 장소나 대상이 나에게 꽂혀서 특별해지면, 그 순간부터 그 공간은 나에게는 '더 이상 거기에 없는' 곳이 되어버리고, 실재하는 장소의 맥락에서 벗어나버린다. ● 제목이 '성'으로 정해져 버린 이 작품은 그런 의미에서 '섬'이기도 하다. 아놀드 뵈클린의 '망자의 섬'이 왠지 첫 발견 때부터 떠올랐기 때문이기도 하고, 이 '성'은 이미 그 일상의 장소를 떠나 비일상의 다른 공간에서 하나의 섬처럼 홀로 떠있기 때문이다. ■ 이만나

The time when I first found this place is the beginning of March last year. But the one had been already placed on the way of Gangbyeon Expressway that I am not used to go before. I am ashamed to say that I found it. To say it more exactly, it was the first time that I was privately facing with. But as thinking back to the works that I had been working on, they are called special 'Discoveries' for me since most of them are 'already placed there'. As these non-everyday life's spots, which are hidden here and there we usually go, are waiting for me, I meet them coincidentally. Supposing the places and targets are stuck in me and becoming special, they would be the things 'that are not there anymore' and unveiled from the real places from that moment. ● The work titled 'Castle' is also 'island' on such meaning. Because I had flashed with The Island of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin from the first discovery, and the 'Castle' come from familiar places is already risen as an island on the unfamiliar places alone. ■ Lee, Manna
